Chapter 8: The Best Man's Secret
Nobody moved.
Ethan stared at Marcus, waiting for the familiar grin, the quick joke, the explanation that would make the last thirty seconds disappear.
Marcus had been his closest friend since college. He had helped Ethan deliver packages in the rain when the business was nothing more than a rented truck and a borrowed warehouse. He had slept on an office couch during their first disastrous expansion and once sold his own car to help Ethan meet payroll.
Ethan had named him best man because there was no one else he trusted more.
Now Marcus stood beside the table, staring at Daniel's phone.
“Ethan: Marcus. Look at me.””
Marcus raised his eyes.
“Ethan: Did you authorize the acquisition?””
Marcus swallowed.
“No.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Daniel: That's interesting. Your signature says otherwise.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“Marcus: You told me the document was a preliminary confidentiality agreement.””
“Daniel: And you signed it.””
“I didn't authorize a transfer of ownership.””
“Daniel: You authorized access to the transaction.””
“Marcus: That isn't the same thing.””
“Daniel: Tell that to the people who funded the proposal.””
Ethan held out his hand.
“Ethan: Give me the phone.””
Daniel tilted it away.
“Daniel: I think we should be careful. This document contains confidential business information.””
“Ethan: You walked into my wedding and displayed it to my family.””
Daniel's smile faded slightly.
“Daniel: I wanted to make sure you understood the situation.””
“Ethan: I understand that you're using private documents to pressure people. Hand over the phone or leave.””
For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely annoyed.
He slipped the device into his pocket.
“Daniel: Fine. But don't pretend you're the only person who has something to lose.””
Olivia moved beside Ethan.
“Olivia: This conversation is over. Our independent counsel will contact you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Daniel: You should be careful about making promises on behalf of a company that might not belong to you much longer.””
Ethan pointed toward the door.
“Ethan: Leave.””
Daniel adjusted his cuffs.
“Daniel: Gladly. But Marcus should probably explain why he agreed to help us.””
He walked out without another word.
The door closed behind him.
Ethan turned toward his best friend.
“Ethan: Start talking.””
Marcus lowered himself into a chair.
For the first time that day, he looked older than his thirty-five years. His shoulders sagged, and he rubbed both hands over his face.
“Marcus: Three months ago, Daniel approached me with a proposal.””
“Ethan: Why you?””
“Marcus: Because he knew I was involved in the company's early operations. He said a group of investors wanted to buy a minority stake and help us expand.””
“Ethan: And you didn't tell me?””
“I thought it was just another investment offer.””
“Ethan: You signed documents without telling me?””
Marcus nodded.
“Marcus: I signed a confidentiality agreement and an authorization to share limited operational information. I thought it was a standard preliminary process.””
Olivia leaned against the table.
“Olivia: Did you receive money?””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
“Olivia: Any promises of future employment, shares, or compensation?””
He hesitated.
Ethan's face hardened.
“Ethan: Marcus.””
“Marcus: Daniel offered me a position in the proposed company if the acquisition went through.””
The silence that followed was worse than shouting.
Ethan stepped back.
“How long?””
Marcus looked down.
“Marcus: He made the offer before I signed.””
“Ethan: And you still signed.””
“I thought you would reject the investment if I told you. You'd already turned down three offers, and we were preparing to expand into two new regions.””
“Ethan: So you decided to sell access to my company because you thought you knew better than I did?””
“Marcus: I didn't think I was selling anything.””
“Ethan: You knew enough to hide it.””
Marcus's eyes filled with frustration.
“Marcus: Yes. I did. And I was wrong.””
For a moment, Ethan remembered the years before the company became successful. Marcus had been there when Ethan had nothing to offer except a plan and an unreasonable amount of confidence.
That history made the betrayal harder to understand, not easier.
“Ethan: Did you know about Vanessa's agreement with Daniel?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. I swear to you, I didn't know about that until today.””
“Ethan: Did you know about the eighty-five-thousand-dollar transfer?””
“No.””
“Ethan: Did you know Daniel was trying to acquire controlling interest?””
Marcus hesitated.
“I suspected he wanted more than a minority stake. But he told me the final terms would be negotiated later.””
Ethan stared at him.
“Ethan: You suspected, and you signed anyway.””
Marcus had no answer.
Olivia picked up the document from the table.
“Olivia: We need to verify the signatures and the authorization records. A document showing Marcus's signature doesn't prove that he approved the final acquisition terms.””
Marcus looked at her gratefully.
But Olivia didn't soften her expression.
“Olivia: That doesn't excuse what he admitted.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
Ethan walked to the window.
Outside, a valet moved a luxury sedan away from the entrance. Guests were beginning to leave the ballroom in small groups, their elegant clothes bright beneath the afternoon sun.
His mother appeared through the doorway, her face lined with worry.
“Evelyn: Ethan, sweetheart. The guests are asking what happened.””
He turned toward her.
“Ethan: Tell them the ceremony has been canceled for today.””
His mother's hand rose to her mouth.
“Evelyn: Are you sure?””
He glanced toward Vanessa, who sat silently near the wall.
“Ethan: I'm sure.””
Evelyn approached him.
“Evelyn: Whatever happened, you don't have to make every decision in the next five minutes.””
“I know.””
“Evelyn: Then breathe, baby.””
For the first time that afternoon, Ethan allowed himself to do exactly that.
His mother squeezed his hand.
“Evelyn: I raised you to believe that loyalty matters. But loyalty doesn't mean allowing someone to hurt you repeatedly.””
Ethan looked toward Marcus.
“Ethan: I know.””
Evelyn followed his gaze.
“Evelyn: And sometimes the hardest thing is accepting that someone you love has made a choice you cannot make for them.””
She kissed his cheek and returned to the ballroom.
Marcus stood.
“Marcus: Ethan, I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. But I need you to know that I never intended to destroy what we built.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Ethan: Intentions don't undo signatures.””
Marcus's shoulders dropped.
“I understand.””
“Ethan: Until the investigation is complete, you're not representing me, the company, or the foundation in any capacity. You'll cooperate with counsel and provide every document Daniel gave you.””
Marcus nodded.
“Marcus: I will.””
He walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he turned back.
“Marcus: There's one more thing. Daniel said the acquisition would never succeed unless you were personally implicated in the foundation transfer. He believed that if the donor suspended support, you would be forced to restructure the company.””
Ethan frowned.
“Ethan: Why would I restructure the company because of a foundation investigation?””
“Marcus: Because the original donor has a contractual option tied to the foundation's financial stability. If certain conditions are met, they can demand repayment of a major loan.””
Olivia went still.
“Olivia: That loan was refinanced last year.””
“Marcus: Daniel said the original option was never fully extinguished.””
Ethan turned to his sister.
“Ethan: Is that possible?””
Olivia opened her folder and began searching through the papers.
“I need to see the complete refinancing agreement.””
She found the document and scanned the relevant section.
Then she stopped.
“Olivia: The option was supposed to be released when the loan was refinanced. But the release required a separate acknowledgment from the original donor.””
“Ethan: Was it signed?””
Olivia's face tightened.
“I don't see it here.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Marcus: Daniel said that was the leverage. If the acknowledgment was missing, the donor could challenge the refinancing and demand immediate repayment.””
Ethan looked at the documents spread across the table.
A forged authorization. A suspicious transfer. A private acquisition proposal. A missing release.
The pieces were beginning to form a picture, but one important question remained.
Who had engineered the entire sequence?
Before he could ask, Vanessa rose from her chair.
“Vanessa: I know who sent the original message.””
Everyone turned.
She wiped her face and looked directly at Ethan.
“Vanessa: It wasn't Daniel.””
“Ethan: Who was it?””
Vanessa glanced at Olivia, then at the door through which Marcus had disappeared.
“Vanessa: Someone who has been trying to stop the acquisition from the beginning.””
“Ethan: Give me a name.””
She drew a trembling breath.
“Vanessa: Your mother.””
Ethan stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
“Vanessa: She found out about the contract months ago. She contacted me privately and told me to walk away from you before Daniel could use our marriage to gain control of the company.””
Olivia's expression changed.
“Olivia: When did this happen?””
“Vanessa: Six weeks ago. She showed me a copy of the original agreement and warned me that Daniel had been lying about what he could deliver.””
Ethan's voice dropped.
“Ethan: Why didn't you listen?””
Vanessa looked at him with exhausted eyes.
“Vanessa: Because Daniel told me your mother was trying to protect the company at my expense. He said she would make sure I received nothing if I married you.””
“Ethan: So you decided to marry me anyway.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Vanessa: I thought I could control the situation.””
Ethan almost laughed.
Instead, he picked up his phone and called his mother.
She answered on the second ring.
“Evelyn: Ethan? Are you all right?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Ethan: Did you know about the acquisition agreement?””
Silence.
Then his mother's voice changed.
“Evelyn: Yes.””
Ethan's heart sank.
“Ethan: Why didn't you tell me?””
“Evelyn: Because I didn't have enough evidence to prove who was involved.””
“Ethan: You let me walk into this wedding without telling me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Ethan: From whom?””
His mother hesitated.
Then she said something that made Olivia cover her mouth.
“Evelyn: From the person who arranged the original deal—and who has been sitting on the Carter Family Foundation's board for twelve years.””
Ethan looked at Olivia.
“Ethan: Who?””
May you like
His mother's answer came quietly.
“Evelyn: Your uncle, Richard.””
