Chapter 6: The Price of Saying I Do

Ethan stood motionless with the phone against his ear.

Through the lounge windows, sunlight fell across the wedding guests. The floral arrangements remained perfect. Champagne waited on silver trays. Somewhere in the ballroom, a child laughed, unaware that the ceremony had become an investigation into a possible corporate takeover.

“Ethan: Explain what you just said.””

Thomas Bennett's voice tightened.

“Thomas: The document Vanessa signed was part of a private acquisition proposal. The proposal never closed, but someone retained copies of the original terms.””

“Ethan: Who?””

“Thomas: Daniel Reeves was representing a group of private investors. They wanted a controlling interest in Carter Logistics.””

Ethan looked at Olivia.

She had heard enough to understand the direction of the conversation.

“Ethan: Why would Vanessa be involved?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Thomas: Because she introduced them to someone who could give them access to information about your company.””

“Ethan: Who was that someone?””

“Thomas: I don't know for certain.””

Ethan's voice hardened.

“Ethan: Thomas, your account attempted to access restricted files. Your name appears in the audit log. I need the truth.””

“I know what the audit log says.””

“Ethan: Then explain it.””

“I was asked to verify a set of historical records. I thought it was part of the compliance review.””

“Ethan: By whom?””

Thomas said nothing.

Ethan moved away from the table and lowered his voice.

“Ethan: If you are involved in something that threatens my company, I need to know now.””

Thomas finally answered.

“Thomas: I received instructions from someone using an authorization code assigned to the executive office. The request appeared legitimate.””

“Ethan: Whose code?””

A pause.

“Thomas: Yours.””

Ethan's face went cold.

“Ethan: I didn't authorize any such request.””

“I know that now.””

“Ethan: How long have you known?””

“Thomas: Since this morning.””

“Ethan: And you waited until my wedding was falling apart to call me?””

“Thomas: I was trying to verify the records before making an accusation. I didn't know Vanessa would be involved.””

Ethan glanced at the contract Denise had brought him.

“Ethan: Did you know about the agreement between Vanessa and Daniel?””

“No.””

“Ethan: Did you know someone intended to acquire my company?””

“I knew there had been an old proposal. I didn't know it was still active.””

Ethan closed his eyes for a second.

When he opened them, Olivia was watching him with a grim expression.

“Ethan: Send every relevant document to our independent counsel. Don't delete anything, don't contact Daniel, and don't discuss this with anyone else until counsel advises you.””

“Thomas: Understood.””

“Ethan: And Thomas?””

“Yes?””

“If I discover that you used my authorization code deliberately, your position will be the least of your concerns.””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, the room remained silent.

Marcus pulled out a chair.

“Marcus: This is bigger than the wedding.””

“Ethan: I know.””

“Marcus: We need to secure the company records.””

Olivia nodded.

“Olivia: And the foundation accounts. I'll notify the independent trustee and request that all disputed transactions be reviewed. Nothing should be altered or destroyed.””

Ethan looked at his sister.

“Ethan: Did you know about the acquisition proposal?””

“No. I knew there had been discussions years ago, but I never saw this contract.””

“Ethan: Then why did Vanessa ask you for the money?””

Olivia pressed her lips together.

“Olivia: Maybe she was trying to pay Daniel off. Maybe she was trying to buy time. We shouldn't assume we know until we see the complete records.””

Marcus leaned against the table.

“Marcus: Whatever the reason, the transfer can't stay unexplained.””

“Olivia: It won't.””

A knock interrupted them.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her veil was gone, and her bouquet had been replaced by a white handkerchief. Her makeup remained immaculate, but her eyes were red.

She looked at Ethan.

“Vanessa: Can we talk alone?””

“Ethan: No.””

“Vanessa: Please.””

He gestured toward the empty chair.

“Ethan: You can talk here.””

Vanessa glanced at Olivia and Marcus.

“Vanessa: This concerns our relationship.””

“Ethan: Your relationship with me is now connected to a financial transaction involving the foundation, a confidential acquisition proposal, and a man you claimed not to know.””

She flinched.

“Vanessa: I never said I didn't know Daniel.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Ethan: You told me you didn't recognize him.””

“Vanessa: I panicked.””

“Ethan: That's becoming a pattern.””

She lowered herself into the chair.

For a moment, she appeared to struggle with what she wanted to say.

Then she took a breath.

“Vanessa: Three years ago, I worked for a small investment firm. Daniel was one of the people we dealt with. He introduced me to clients and taught me how private acquisitions worked.””

“Ethan: And the contract?””

“I signed it.””

“Ethan: Why?””

“Vanessa: I was young. I wanted to prove myself. Daniel said there was an opportunity to earn a substantial fee if I introduced the right person.””

“Ethan: Me.””

She nodded.

“Vanessa: I didn't know who the final investor would be at first. I was told it was a legitimate transaction.””

Olivia folded her arms.

“Olivia: When did you learn they wanted control of Carter Logistics?””

Vanessa looked at her hands.

“Vanessa: After Ethan and I started dating.””

Ethan felt a dull pressure behind his ribs.

“Ethan: So you knew when you accepted my proposal.””

“Vanessa: I knew there had been an old agreement. I didn't know whether it was still enforceable.””

“Ethan: You knew enough to hide it.””

“Vanessa: Because I fell in love with you!””

Nobody spoke.

Ethan looked at her for a long moment.

“Ethan: Then why did you tell your friend you never loved me?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“Vanessa: Because I was angry.””

“Ethan: At me?””

“At myself. At Daniel. At everything.””

“Ethan: That's not an explanation.””

She wiped her cheek.

“Vanessa: Daniel contacted me after our engagement. He said the old contract could still cause problems for him. He wanted documents from your company. I refused.””

“Ethan: Did you give him anything?””

“No.””

“Ethan: Did you use my access credentials?””

“No!””

Her answer was immediate and forceful.

“Vanessa: I never touched your company's systems. I never stole your files. I swear to you.””

Olivia studied her.

“Olivia: Then why did Daniel demand money?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Vanessa: He said he had proof that I had violated the agreement. He threatened to send everything to Ethan and tell him I had been working with him all along.””

“Ethan: Were you?””

“Vanessa: Not after we met.””

“Ethan: That's not the same as saying no.””

She pressed the handkerchief to her mouth.

“Vanessa: I wanted to leave that part of my life behind. I thought if I ignored Daniel, he would eventually stop.””

“Ethan: Instead, you paid him with money from the foundation.””

“Vanessa: I thought I could repay it before anyone noticed.””

“Olivia: You had no authority to use that money.””

“I know.””

“Olivia: And you lied about the reason for the transfer.””

“I know!””

Vanessa stood abruptly, sending the chair scraping backward.

“Vanessa: What do you want me to say? That I made a terrible mistake? That I'm sorry? I am sorry!””

Ethan remained seated.

“Ethan: I'm trying to determine which parts of our relationship were real.””

Her anger vanished.

She stared at him as if those words had finally reached a place the accusations couldn't.

“Vanessa: Ethan, I loved you.””

He looked at her.

“Ethan: Did you love me before you knew what my company was worth?””

She hesitated.

It lasted less than a second.

But Ethan saw it.

And that fraction of a second hurt more than all the shouting in the ballroom.

Vanessa sat down again.

“Vanessa: I can't answer that the way you want me to.””

“Ethan: Then answer honestly.””

She twisted the handkerchief between her fingers.

“Vanessa: At first, I was curious about your money. I won't lie about that. But then I got to know you.

You were kind to my mother. You remembered little things. You never made me feel small.””

Her voice broke.

“Vanessa: Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with you. But I was afraid that if you knew about Daniel, you would leave me.””

Ethan's expression remained unreadable.

“Ethan: So you decided to marry me without telling me.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“Vanessa: Yes.””

“Ethan: And when you thought you could secure my money by waiting six months and divorcing me?””

She covered her face.

“Vanessa: I was talking to my friend. I was angry and scared, and I said something cruel. I didn't think you would ever hear it.””

“Ethan: You planned to use our marriage as protection.””

She didn't deny it.

Outside the lounge, the wedding coordinator appeared briefly, then retreated when Marcus shook his head.

Ethan looked toward the ballroom.

His mother was waiting. His relatives were waiting. Hundreds of guests had come to celebrate a marriage that now seemed built on questions nobody had asked.

He stood.

“Ethan: The ceremony is postponed.””

Vanessa's head snapped up.

“Vanessa: Postponed? You can't just postpone it!””

“Ethan: I can decide whether I'm ready to get married.””

“Vanessa: Everyone is waiting for us.””

“Ethan: They can wait.””

“Vanessa: What am I supposed to tell them?””

“Ethan: The truth would be a good place to start.””

She stared at him.

“Vanessa: If you walk out of that room, you will destroy everything we've built.””

Ethan picked up the original agreement and placed it in his folder.

“Ethan: No, Vanessa. I'm refusing to sign something I don't understand.””

He walked toward the door.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from an unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

Vanessa has told you about the old contract. She hasn't told you who actually signed the final acquisition documents.

Ethan stopped.

A second message followed.

Check the signature on page seven.

He opened the photograph of the contract and enlarged the seventh page.

At the bottom was a signature authorizing the proposed transfer of controlling interest.

The name was not Vanessa's.

It was not Daniel's.

It belonged to someone Ethan had trusted with his company for seven years.

*Thomas Bennett.*

And beside Thomas's signature was a date from just two weeks earlier.

Ethan slowly turned toward Vanessa.

She had seen the screen.

Her face went white.

“Vanessa: Ethan, please. Don't call him.””

But Ethan was already pressing the number.

And when Thomas answered, the first words out of his mouth were not a denial.

May you like

They were a confession.

“Thomas: I can explain why I signed it—but you need to know who ordered me to do it.””
