Chapter 7: The Name Behind the Betrayal

“I can explain why I signed it—but you need to know who ordered me to do it.””

Thomas Bennett's voice came through the phone, thin and strained.

Ethan stood in the bright lounge, the wedding guests murmuring beyond the open doors. Vanessa remained beside the table, her fingers clenched around a white handkerchief. Olivia had stopped sorting the documents. Even Marcus seemed afraid to breathe.

Ethan put the call on speaker.

“Ethan: You have thirty seconds to explain why your signature is on a document transferring control of my company.””

Thomas exhaled.

“Thomas: The document was presented as a preliminary restructuring proposal. I was told it had your approval.””

“Ethan: By whom?””

A pause.

“Thomas: Olivia.””

Every head turned toward Ethan's sister.

Olivia stared at the phone.

“Olivia: That's a lie.””

“Thomas: You sent the authorization request through the executive office.””

“Olivia: I never sent you anything.””

Ethan lifted one hand.

“Ethan: Thomas, did you personally speak to Olivia?””

“No. The instructions came through an encrypted internal account. The message included an authorization code that appeared to belong to you.””

“Ethan: You signed a document worth hundreds of millions of dollars without speaking to me?””

Thomas's breathing grew uneven.

“Thomas: I was told you wanted the transaction completed quietly before the end of the quarter. I thought you were protecting the company from a public dispute with the investors.””

“Ethan: Which investors?””

“Thomas: Daniel Reeves's group.””

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

Daniel's name had followed them from the foundation's financial records to Vanessa's old contract. Now it had reached the executive office itself.

“Ethan: What did you receive in exchange for your signature?””

Silence.

“Ethan: Thomas.””

“Thomas: Nothing.””

Marcus gave a disbelieving laugh.

“Marcus: Try again.””

Thomas's voice sharpened.

“Thomas: I didn't take a payment. I was trying to keep a transaction from collapsing.””

“Ethan: Then why did you hide it?””

“Thomas: Because I realized the authorization might have been forged.””

The room fell silent.

Ethan opened his eyes.

“Ethan: When?””

“This morning. I received a request for the original documents. The request came from an account I didn't recognize. I checked the authorization records, and the signature didn't match the digital approval.””

“Ethan: Yet you waited until now to tell me.””

“I was trying to establish who had sent the instructions.””

“Ethan: And did you?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Thomas: Not conclusively.””

Olivia stepped closer to the phone.

“Olivia: You just accused me of ordering the transaction. What evidence do you have?””

“The message appeared to originate from your office.””

“Olivia: My office has been under review for weeks. Someone could have copied the format.””

“Thomas: That's possible.””

“Olivia: It's more than possible. It's what happened.””

Ethan watched his sister carefully.

She sounded angry, but not frightened. Her hands were steady, and she wasn't trying to leave the room.

For the first time since Olivia had arrived at the wedding, he considered the possibility that she had been drawn into the same deception.

He turned back to Thomas.

“Ethan: Preserve every email, every access log, and every version of the agreement. Send everything directly to our independent counsel. You will not contact Daniel, Vanessa, or Olivia about this again until counsel has reviewed the evidence.””

“Thomas: Understood.””

“Ethan: And don't resign. If you walk away before the investigation begins, I will have no way to distinguish panic from guilt.””

Thomas swallowed audibly.

“Thomas: Ethan, there's something else.””

“Ethan: What?””

“The investors weren't interested in the company because of its profits alone. They wanted access to the contracts we use for government logistics and emergency supply operations.””

Ethan's stomach tightened.

“Ethan: Those contracts contain restricted information.””

“I know.””

“Ethan: Did any of it leave the company?””

“I can't confirm that.””

Ethan ended the call.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Olivia pulled out a chair and sat down.

“Olivia: Someone has been using your identity, your office, and my name to make these transactions look legitimate.””

Marcus looked at the documents spread across the table.

“Marcus: Which means the wedding wasn't necessarily the main objective.””

Ethan glanced at Vanessa.

“Ethan: What did Daniel tell you he wanted?””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Vanessa: He said he wanted the money back.””

“Ethan: That's all?””

“No.””

She lowered her eyes.

“He said he needed something that would force you to cooperate if the acquisition failed.””

“Ethan: What kind of something?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“Vanessa: Evidence that you had personally approved the original transaction.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You knew about the forged authorization?””

“I didn't know it was forged. Daniel told me there was a signed agreement and that you had already approved the deal.””

“Ethan: And you believed him?””

“Vanessa: I wanted to believe him because I thought it meant I could repay the money, end the threats, and start our marriage without this hanging over us.””

“Ethan: You could have told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Ethan: You were afraid of losing the life you thought I could give you.””

She looked up sharply.

“Vanessa: That's not fair.””

“Ethan: Then tell me what is fair.””

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no answer came.

A knock sounded at the door.

The wedding coordinator entered, followed by a venue security supervisor.

“Coordinator: Mr. Carter, I'm sorry. A gentleman is asking to see you. He says his name is Daniel Reeves.””

Vanessa stood so abruptly that her chair toppled backward.

“Vanessa: No. Don't let him in.””

The security supervisor looked confused.

“Supervisor: He says he's a business associate of the family.””

Ethan straightened his jacket.

“Ethan: Bring him to the lounge.””

“Vanessa: Ethan, you don't understand what he's capable of.””

“Ethan: Then this is your chance to explain.””

She grabbed his arm.

“Vanessa: Please. He told me that if I ever spoke about the agreement, he'd ruin all of us.””

Ethan gently removed her hand.

“Ethan: He doesn't get to decide what we know.””

The supervisor returned a moment later with a tall Black man in a dark blue suit. Daniel Reeves looked to be in his early forties, with an immaculate tie, polished shoes, and the relaxed smile of someone who expected every room to accommodate him.

He carried no briefcase.

Instead, he held a small black phone.

“Daniel: Ethan Carter. Congratulations on the wedding.””

Ethan didn't offer his hand.

“Ethan: The ceremony is postponed.””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“Daniel: I can see that.””

Vanessa took a step backward.

“Vanessa: You shouldn't be here.””

Daniel smiled at her.

“Daniel: You invited me when you decided to borrow money you couldn't repay.””

“Vanessa: I didn't invite you anywhere.””

“Daniel: You signed the agreement. You accepted the money. You made promises.””

Ethan stepped between them.

“Ethan: Whatever arrangement you have with Vanessa, you will discuss it through legal counsel.””

Daniel gave a small laugh.

“Daniel: Of course. But I suspect you'll want to hear one thing before your attorneys get involved.””

He placed his phone on the table.

The screen displayed a scanned document with Ethan's signature.

“Daniel: Your chief financial officer wasn't the only person who signed the acquisition papers.””

Ethan leaned forward.

The document was dated two weeks earlier.

Beneath Thomas Bennett's signature was another name, followed by an authorization bearing the Carter Logistics executive seal.

Daniel tapped the screen.

“Daniel: Someone inside your family approved the transfer before Thomas ever touched the paperwork.””

Olivia rose slowly.

“Olivia: Who?””

Daniel turned the phone toward her.

And when Ethan saw the name, he felt the floor shift beneath him.

The authorization belonged to *Marcus Reed*, his best friend and the man who had stood beside him at the altar.

Ethan looked up.

Marcus had gone completely pale.

“Ethan: Tell me that's a forgery.””

Marcus didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Daniel and whispered, “You said the original file was destroyed.””

May you like

Daniel's smile widened.

And Ethan finally understood that the betrayal had been standing beside him all morning.
