Chapter 10: The Name My Husband Feared
The basement had never felt so cold.
I had walked down those stairs hundreds of times.
To find old holiday decorations.
To store boxes of photographs.
To search for things Thomas and I had forgotten we owned.
But that night was different.
That night, every step felt like I was walking closer to a truth my husband had spent years hiding from me.
The wooden box sat beneath the stairs.
My name was carved into the top.
EVELYN.
And beside it was the note.
Written in Thomas’s handwriting.
“Trust no one.””
My fingers trembled as I held the paper.
I knew his handwriting.
The slight curve of the T.
The way he pressed harder when he wrote something important.
This was him.
Not a copy.
Not a forgery.
Him.
Marcus stood beside me.
“Mom…”
I looked at him.
“I don’t understand.””
Neither did I.
Then my eyes moved to the name written beneath Thomas’s warning.
The name that had made Marcus go silent.
The name that had broken something in his expression.
“Marcus,” I whispered.
He looked away.
“Tell me.””
He swallowed.
The basement lights flickered above us.
“Mom…”
“Tell me.””
He closed his eyes.
“It’s Brielle.””
The silence was unbearable.
Behind us, I heard footsteps.
Daniel.
Rachel.
And Brielle.
She had followed us down.
Of course she had.
She needed to know what was inside that box.
She needed to know what Thomas had left behind.
“What did you say?”” she asked.
Marcus turned around.
His face was filled with disbelief.
“The note.””
She looked at the paper.
Then at the box.
Then at me.
“I don’t understand.””
“No?”” Marcus said.
His voice was different.
“You don’t understand why my father wrote your name?””
Brielle shook her head.
“I never saw this before.””
I studied her carefully.
And for the first time, I wondered if she was telling the truth.
Not the whole truth.
But maybe this part.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Open the box.””
I looked down.
The lock was old.
The key beside it fit perfectly.
Thomas had prepared this.
He had known someone would find it.
I inserted the key.
Turned it.
The lock opened with a small click.
Inside was not money.
Not property documents.
Not jewelry.
Only files.
Hundreds of pages.
And one envelope.
On the envelope was written:
“FOR EVELYN ONLY.””
My heart tightened.
I picked it up.
Marcus looked at me.
“Are you sure you want to read that now?””
No.
I wasn’t sure.
But I knew I couldn’t walk away anymore.
I opened it.
The letter began with my husband’s words.
Evelyn,
If you are reading this, then my fears were correct.
Someone close to us has been searching for what I protected.
I stopped reading.
Someone close to us.
Not a stranger.
Not an enemy.
Someone family.
I continued.
I spent years believing I could fix what happened between me and Anthony. I was wrong. The damage had already spread.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
I kept reading.
Anthony was not the person who betrayed me.
My breath caught.
The entire story we believed was wrong.
Thomas continued.
The person who stole from the company was someone neither of us suspected.
Someone who had access to our home.
Someone who knew our routines.
Someone who knew where we kept everything.
My hand tightened around the paper.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
I need you to be careful with Marcus.
I stopped.
Marcus looked at me.
“Me?””
I read the sentence again.
Not because I didn’t understand.
Because I wanted it to change.
Marcus is innocent. But he has been manipulated for years by someone who knows exactly how to use his loyalty.
My eyes lifted.
Toward Brielle.
She looked terrified.
“This isn’t about me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody knew if that was true.
Daniel picked up another file.
“Mrs. Carter, there’s something here.””
He opened a folder.
Inside were financial records.
Transactions.
Dates.
Names.
And one name appeared again and again.
Brielle Carter.
Marcus saw it.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I need to understand.””
Brielle stepped forward.
“Marcus, listen.””
He looked at her.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But final.
“I listened to you for years.””
She froze.
“I defended you.””
“I know.””
“I made excuses for you.””
“I know.””
“And now I find out my father was investigating you?””
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t do what you think.””
“Then what did you do?””
She didn’t answer.
That was becoming her answer.
Rachel examined the files.
“These records show money transfers.””
Daniel nodded.
“Large ones.””
I looked at Brielle.
“From who?””
Daniel pointed.
“Anthony Reed.””
The room went silent.
Brielle whispered:
“He was helping me.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Helping you do what?””
She looked at him.
And I saw something change.
The fear.
The guilt.
The exhaustion.
She finally looked like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy.
“I was trying to find out what happened to my father.””
I stared.
“And you thought stealing my house would answer that?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
She looked at the box.
“Because I thought your husband hid proof here.””
I felt my anger rise.
“You broke into my life because of a suspicion?””
“I thought Thomas destroyed my family.””
“And now?””
She looked at the letter in my hand.
“Now I think my father lied to me.””
Nobody moved.
Then Marcus noticed something.
A small folder at the bottom of the box.
“What is that?””
I reached inside.
The folder was different.
Newer.
And on the front was a handwritten label.
Not Thomas’s handwriting.
Not mine.
Brielle’s eyes widened.
“No.””
She stepped forward.
I pulled it away.
“What is it?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she already knew.
Marcus looked at her.
“Brielle?””
Her voice became a whisper.
“That’s the file I was looking for.””
I opened it.
The first page was a DNA test.
May you like
And the name at the top wasn’t Brielle.
It was Marcus.
