Chapter 7: The Secret My Husband Left Behind

The document on Brielle’s phone felt heavier than paper should feel.

I had held thousands of papers in my life.

Bills.

Contracts.

Birth certificates.

Tax records.

Letters from people I loved.

But nothing had ever made my hands shake the way that single image did.

Because at the bottom of that page was a signature I knew better than my own.

Thomas Carter.

My husband.

My best friend.

The man who had held my hand through every difficult season of my life.

The man who had been buried twelve years ago.

I stared at the screen.

“That’s impossible.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel Whitmore carefully zoomed in on the image.

“The signature appears authentic.””

I looked at him.

“Appears?””

He lowered the phone.

“Mrs. Carter, I’m saying I need to examine the original document before making any conclusions.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I looked at my son.

And for a moment, I saw the little boy who used to run through this house with scraped knees and a missing front tooth.

A boy who trusted his parents completely.

A boy who never imagined adults could hide things.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

Brielle crossed her arms.

“You really don’t?””

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked nervous now.

But there was still something else.

Something almost like relief.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

“What does that mean?”” Marcus asked.

Brielle looked at him.

“It means your mother wasn’t the only person keeping secrets.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“Careful.””

She looked at me.

“Why? Because I’m saying something uncomfortable?””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Because you are using my husband’s memory to distract everyone from what you did.””

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she looked hurt.

But it disappeared quickly.

“You think everything is about me.””

“No,” I said.

“Tonight, everything is about the choices you made.””

Rachel, the investigator, looked between us.

“Can we focus on the document?””

She turned to Brielle.

“Who sent this to you?””

Brielle hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody believed her.

Rachel noticed.

“Your phone received it from an unknown number?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t ask who it was?””

Brielle looked away.

“No.””

Daniel sighed.

“That means you expected it.””

Brielle didn’t respond.

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew someone was going to send you this.””

Her silence answered.

I sat down slowly.

My mind went back twelve years.

Thomas lying in the hospital.

His hand wrapped around mine.

His voice barely above a whisper.

“Evelyn, promise me something.””

I had cried.

“I promise anything.””

“Protect what we built.””

At the time, I thought he meant the house.

The family.

The memories.

But what if he meant something else?

Something he never told me?

Daniel opened his briefcase.

“I need to ask you something difficult.””

I looked at him.

“Go ahead.””

“Did your husband ever mention changing the ownership structure of this property?””

I frowned.

“No.””

“Creating another agreement?””

“No.””

“Meeting with another attorney?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at the document again.

“That’s a problem.””

“Why?””

“Because this document appears to involve this property.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What kind of document?””

Daniel hesitated.

“A transfer agreement.””

The room became silent.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“My husband transferred the house?””

“No,” Daniel said quickly.

“We don’t know that.””

Brielle suddenly spoke.

“But someone wanted us to think he did.””

Everyone looked at her.

She realized what she had said.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“Us?””

Brielle froze.

I heard it.

The word she accidentally revealed.

Us.

Not me.

Us.

“Who is us?”” Marcus asked.

She didn’t answer.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, did Thomas have any business partners?””

“Yes.””

“One in particular?””

I thought.

Then remembered.

“There was someone.””

“Who?””

I swallowed.

“Anthony Reed.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Dad’s old partner?””

I nodded.

Anthony had been part of Thomas’s life before I knew him.

They built a small investment company together.

When Thomas retired, Anthony disappeared from our lives.

At least, I thought he did.

Daniel exchanged a look with Rachel.

“What?””

Daniel placed the document down.

“Anthony Reed’s name appears on this paperwork.””

My heart sank.

“But Anthony has nothing to do with this house.””

“According to this document, he may have thought differently.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“How did you know about Anthony?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why were you trying to claim the house?””

No answer.

I stood.

“Where is the original document?””

Everyone looked at me.

“The real one.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s what we need to find.””

Brielle suddenly moved.

Quickly.

Too quickly.

She grabbed her purse.

Marcus noticed.

“What are you doing?””

“Leaving.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I need time.””

“For what?””

She didn’t answer.

Rachel stepped forward.

“Mrs. Carter, if you have any documents connected to this matter, we need to see them.””

Brielle laughed nervously.

“I don’t have anything.””

But as she opened her purse, something slipped out.

A small envelope.

It landed on the floor.

Nobody moved.

Brielle looked down.

Her face went pale.

Marcus picked it up before she could.

“Marcus, don’t.””

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

The image showed Thomas standing beside Anthony Reed.

And beside them…

Was Brielle.

But she wasn’t the same age.

She was much younger.

Marcus stared.

“What is this?””

Brielle said nothing.

I took the photograph from him.

My hands trembled.

Because the date written on the back was from twenty years ago.

Before Marcus met her.

Before our family knew her.

Before she became my daughter-in-law.

And written beneath the date were five words.

May you like

Words that made my blood run cold.

“Ask her about her father.””
