Chapter 13: The Truth Thomas Died Protecting
The basement went completely dark.
For one terrifying second, nobody moved.
Then Rachel’s flashlight cut through the darkness.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
Her voice was calm.
Professional.
But even she sounded shaken.
The beam moved toward the staircase.
A figure stood at the top.
A silhouette.
Watching.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
The person slowly descended the stairs.
And when the light finally reached his face, my heart stopped.
Anthony Reed.
Older.
Tired.
Different from the man in the photographs.
But unmistakably him.
Marcus stared.
“You.””
Anthony looked at him.
“I know.””
The anger in Marcus’s face appeared instantly.
“You knew.””
Anthony lowered his eyes.
“I did.””
“You knew all of this?””
“No.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“That’s convenient.””
Anthony walked into the basement.
“I knew enough to be afraid.””
I stepped forward.
“Afraid of what?””
Anthony looked at me.
And for the first time in twelve years, I saw the man who had stood beside my husband.
Not a villain.
Not a friend.
A person carrying regret.
“Of what Thomas discovered.””
Daniel moved closer.
“You need to explain everything.””
Anthony nodded.
“I will.””
He looked at the file still in my hands.
“The document you found is real.””
Marcus froze.
The room became silent.
“My birth certificate?”” he asked.
Anthony looked at him.
“Yes.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became smaller.
“No, that’s not possible.””
I wanted to say something.
Anything.
But my mind was still trying to understand.
The document said Marcus’s mother was not me.
Yet I had raised him.
Loved him.
Held him.
How could a piece of paper change that?
Anthony looked at me.
“Evelyn, Thomas never wanted you to find out this way.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Anthony swallowed.
“Because he was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From the person who caused all of this.””
Everyone looked at him.
Anthony continued.
“Years ago, Thomas discovered that someone had manipulated the company records. Money was moved. Documents were changed. Evidence disappeared.””
Daniel nodded.
“The transfer attempts.””
“Yes.””
Anthony looked at Brielle.
“And that is why your father believed Thomas betrayed him.””
Brielle stared.
“My father was wrong?””
Anthony nodded.
“Completely.””
She looked like the answer hurt more than the lie.
“But why?””
Anthony looked at Marcus.
“Because the person who stole from the company wanted everyone to blame me.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Anthony looked away.
Then at me.
“The person who had access to everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Anthony took a breath.
“Someone in Thomas’s home.””
The room became silent.
A horrible realization moved through everyone.
Denise’s warning.
Thomas’s letter.
The hidden files.
Someone close.
Someone loved.
Anthony looked at Marcus.
“Your biological mother was someone Thomas knew.””
Marcus froze.
I closed my eyes.
The answer was coming.
I didn’t want it.
But I needed it.
“Who was she?””
Anthony looked at me.
“Her name was Claire.””
The name meant nothing.
Until he continued.
“She was Thomas’s assistant.””
My heart sank.
“No.””
Anthony nodded.
“Thomas never had a relationship with her.””
“Then why?””
“Because she was pregnant.””
Marcus stepped back.
“What?””
Anthony looked at him.
“She died giving birth.””
The room went quiet.
“And Thomas…”
Anthony’s voice softened.
“Thomas promised her he would protect you.””
I looked at Marcus.
My son.
The child I had chosen to love.
The child I had never once thought of as anything but mine.
“I adopted him.””
Anthony nodded.
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Not because it changed my love.
Because it changed my understanding of my entire life.
Marcus looked at me.
“You knew?””
I shook my head immediately.
“No.””
His eyes filled.
“You didn’t know?””
“No.””
He looked relieved.
Then devastated.
Because the truth was somehow worse.
Everyone had hidden something.
Except me.
Anthony continued.
“Thomas planned to tell you.””
“Why didn’t he?””
“Because before he could, he discovered the person behind the fraud.””
“Who?””
Anthony looked toward the stairs.
Nobody spoke.
Then he said:
“Your husband’s sister.””
I froze.
“My sister-in-law?””
Anthony nodded.
“Thomas’s sister.””
I felt the room disappear.
Thomas had a sister.
A person I had known.
A person who had been part of our lives.
“Margaret?””
Anthony looked down.
“Yes.””
Marcus whispered:
“But Aunt Margaret?””
Anthony nodded.
“She believed Thomas owed her everything. She thought the company should have belonged to her. When she discovered Thomas planned to protect Marcus, she became desperate.””
Daniel looked at the files.
“She forged documents.””
“Yes.””
“Attempted transfers.””
“Yes.””
“And blamed Anthony.””
Anthony nodded.
Brielle covered her mouth.
“My father spent his whole life believing the wrong person ruined him.””
Anthony looked at her.
“I know.””
She looked broken.
“I helped him continue that lie.””
Nobody answered.
Because she had.
But she had also been manipulated.
Just like everyone else.
Marcus looked at me.
“Why didn’t Dad tell you?””
Anthony’s expression changed.
“Because the last thing Thomas did before he died was write that letter.””
I looked at the note.
“Trust no one.””
Anthony nodded.
“He knew Margaret was watching.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
Everyone looked.
A message.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
“She’s coming back for the files.””
Rachel immediately looked toward the basement door.
“Who?””
Anthony whispered:
“Margaret.””
The lights upstairs flickered.
Then we heard the front door open.
May you like
Someone had entered the house.
Someone who believed the secrets still belonged to them.
