Chapter 14: The Last Person I Expected

The sound of footsteps echoed through the house.

Slow.

Confident.

Not rushed.

Whoever had entered wasn’t afraid of being caught.

That frightened me more than anything.

Rachel moved toward the stairs.

“Stay here.””

But I followed.

Marcus followed me.

So did Anthony.

Because after everything we had learned, nobody was willing to stand aside anymore.

We reached the kitchen.

The destroyed cake was still sitting on the marble island.

The candles had finally burned out.

A celebration abandoned.

A family changed forever.

And standing beside the island was Margaret.

Thomas’s sister.

My former friend.

The woman who had attended every holiday.

Every birthday.

Every family dinner.

She looked at us calmly.

“I was wondering when you would find the box.””

Marcus stared.

“Aunt Margaret?””

She smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You have your father’s eyes.””

The words made him angry.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“You know nothing about your father.””

Anthony stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

She looked at him.

“You’re still protecting them?””

Anthony shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I’m correcting what I helped break.””

Margaret laughed.

“After all these years?””

“Yes.””

She looked around.

“Thomas always thought he was smarter than everyone.””

I stared at her.

“You tried to take my home.””

She looked at me.

“I tried to take what should have been mine.””

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“You tried to take what belonged to my son.””

Her eyes moved toward Marcus.

“You mean the boy who isn’t really your son?””

The words hit hard.

Marcus stepped forward.

But I stopped him.

Not because she deserved protection.

Because she wanted anger.

And I wouldn’t give it to her.

“He is my son,” I said.

Margaret smiled.

“That’s exactly what Thomas wanted everyone to believe.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t understand what family means.””

She laughed.

“You think love changes blood?””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

Because I knew it was true.

Margaret’s expression shifted.

For a moment, I saw something behind her anger.

Jealousy.

She had spent years believing she was owed something.

And when Thomas chose love over inheritance, she hated him for it.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Margaret Carter, you are being investigated for document fraud, attempted property transfer, and identity manipulation.””

She looked at him.

“Do you have proof?””

I almost smiled.

Because Thomas did.

The box.

The files.

The records.

The truth.

Margaret looked at Brielle.

“You.””

Brielle froze.

“You were supposed to get the files.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Margaret sighed.

“Your wife was useful.””

Brielle’s face collapsed.

“You used me?””

Margaret shrugged.

“You wanted answers. I gave you someone to blame.””

The betrayal was obvious.

Brielle looked devastated.

“You told me Thomas destroyed my father.””

“I told you what you needed to hear.””

I watched Brielle absorb the truth.

The person she trusted most had used her pain as a weapon.

Marcus looked at her.

“Is that why you married me?””

She looked at him.

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

And this time, I believed her.

“No, Marcus.””

She stepped closer.

“I was wrong about your family. I was angry. I was manipulated. But I never stopped loving you.””

Marcus looked away.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

Margaret rolled her eyes.

“How emotional.””

Anthony looked at her.

“You really haven’t changed.””

She smiled.

“Neither have you.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“It’s over.””

Margaret looked at her.

“No.””

She reached into her coat.

Everyone froze.

But she didn’t pull out a weapon.

She pulled out a document.

A final document.

“You think you know everything.””

She placed it on the counter.

“This is the original agreement.””

Daniel grabbed it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Margaret smiled.

“Read it.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Then me.

“The original agreement states that Thomas placed the property into a protected trust…”

I waited.

“…with one condition.””

“What condition?””

Daniel looked at the paper.

“The trust transfers control only when Marcus reaches his fortieth birthday.””

Marcus frowned.

“That’s years away.””

Margaret smiled.

“Not anymore.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued:

“His birthday was yesterday.””

The room went silent.

I felt the blood leave my face.

Because that meant something.

Something important.

Daniel turned the page.

Then stopped.

“What?””

He looked confused.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Daniel slowly looked up.

“There’s an amendment.””

Margaret smiled.

“Yes.””

She knew.

She had been waiting.

Daniel read the final line.

And his face changed.

“Thomas added a second condition.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What condition?””

Daniel looked at him.

Then at me.

And said:

“Marcus cannot inherit anything unless Evelyn chooses him as her son after learning the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Because suddenly the biggest secret wasn’t who Marcus was.

It was whether Thomas believed love could survive the truth.
