Chapter 12: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

I held the phone against my ear.

I couldn’t speak.

Not because I didn’t know what to say.

Because I suddenly knew there were too many questions.

“Denise?””

My voice barely came out.

On the other end, silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

The woman who had hugged me earlier.

The woman who had told me to call if I needed anything.

The woman who had watched my celebration fall apart.

She knew.

“How did you know about the box?””

Another pause.

“Because I helped Thomas hide it.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You helped my father?””

Denise heard him.

She knew he was there.

“Marcus.””

The way she said his name made my heart hurt.

Like she had known him his entire life.

“You need to listen to me.””

I tightened my grip.

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You need to explain.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By hiding things from me?””

“By keeping you alive.””

The words chilled me.

Nobody spoke.

“What does that mean?””

Denise sighed.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Yes.””

“You’re right.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

“Then tell me now.””

She was quiet.

Then:

“Thomas discovered someone was trying to destroy your family.””

“We know.””

“No.””

Her voice lowered.

“You don’t.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Rachel.

“What don’t we know?””

Denise answered slowly.

“The person who started this was not Anthony.””

I closed my eyes.

“We already know that.””

“No, Evelyn.””

Her voice shook.

“The person who started this was someone Thomas loved.””

My heart stopped.

Someone he loved.

Not trusted.

Not knew.

Loved.

Marcus whispered:

“Who?””

Denise didn’t answer.

I looked down at the file.

The second file.

The one marked with Marcus’s name.

“Why can’t I open it?””

“Because once you do, everything changes.””

“Everything already changed.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“This changes who Marcus is.””

Marcus looked at me.

“What does she mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

Denise continued.

“Thomas found out the truth shortly before he died.””

“About what?””

“About Marcus.””

My son went completely still.

I looked at him.

My child.

The baby I held.

The boy I raised.

The man standing in front of me.

“What about him?””

Denise whispered:

“He wasn’t supposed to inherit Thomas’s secrets.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Thomas spent his final year trying to protect Marcus from a truth he wasn’t ready for.””

Marcus grabbed the phone from my hand.

“Denise.””

His voice shook.

“What are you talking about?””

Silence.

Then she said:

“Your father loved you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Another pause.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because I promised him.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“My entire life people have been protecting me from the truth.””

His voice cracked.

“I’m tired of being the only person who doesn’t know anything.””

That sentence broke something in the room.

Because it was true.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had information.

And Marcus was the person everyone claimed to protect.

Denise finally spoke.

“Open the file.””

I looked at the folder.

“What?””

“Open it.””

“You just told me not to.””

“I changed my mind.””

“Why?””

“Because the person who wants you to never read it already knows you found the box.””

The basement went silent.

Rachel immediately looked toward the stairs.

“What do you mean?””

Denise whispered:

“Because they’re already there.””

The call ended.

Everyone froze.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Slowly.

Marcus looked toward the basement stairs.

“Mom?””

Nobody moved.

Daniel quietly reached for his phone.

Rachel stepped forward.

The house that had always felt safe suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Like every room had a secret.

Like every wall had been listening.

I picked up the second file.

My hands shook.

The label stared back at me.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MARCUS.

I opened it.

Inside was one document.

Only one.

A birth certificate.

I read the name.

Then the date.

Then the mother’s name.

My heart stopped.

Because the mother listed on the document was not me.

Marcus looked over my shoulder.

His face changed.

“Mom…”

I couldn’t breathe.

The document fell slightly in my hands.

Because after all these years, the truth was finally in front of us.

And it was impossible.

Marcus looked at the paper.

Then at me.

“Who am I?”” he whispered.

Before I could answer, the basement lights suddenly went out.

Darkness surrounded us.

May you like

And from the top of the stairs, a voice said:

“Because now you finally know.””
