Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Plan

“It wasn’t supposed to happen tonight.””

Those five words stayed in the air.

Not supposed to happen tonight.

Meaning it was supposed to happen.

Just later.

Marcus looked at his wife.

“What wasn’t supposed to happen?””

Brielle didn’t answer.

She stared at the phone in her hand.

Like she was hoping the message would disappear.

It didn’t.

I slowly walked toward her.

“Who sent that?””

She stepped back.

“Nobody.””

Rachel raised an eyebrow.

“Mrs. Carter, that’s not believable.””

Brielle looked frustrated.

“I said nobody.””

Daniel glanced at the phone.

“You seem afraid of whoever it is.””

“I’m not afraid.””

But her voice betrayed her.

She was terrified.

Marcus noticed too.

“Brielle, who are you working with?””

The question hit differently.

Working with.

Not doing.

Not planning.

Working with.

Because even Marcus understood now.

This was bigger than one person.

Brielle looked at him.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

“Try me.””

She laughed softly.

“You always think everything is simple.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“I think my wife secretly trying to take my mother’s house is pretty complicated.””

The pain on her face flashed.

Then disappeared.

She turned toward me.

“You really think you’re innocent in all of this?””

I stared at her.

“Explain.””

“You built this perfect little world and expected everyone to be grateful forever.””

“That is not what I did.””

“Yes, it is.””

Her voice rose.

“You helped us, but you never let us forget you were the one with power.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

“You weren’t there for every conversation.””

“No,” he said.

“But I know my mother.””

Brielle looked at him.

“Do you?””

The question hurt him.

I could see it.

But I also saw something else.

He was finally separating love from loyalty.

And that was not easy.

Daniel opened another file.

“There’s another piece of information.””

Nobody looked away.

“The transfer request was not the first attempt.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He handed me another document.

“This was submitted six months ago.””

I scanned the page.

Another request.

Another forged signature.

Another attempt.

My hands tightened.

Six months.

She had been doing this for six months.

Brielle saw my expression.

“I stopped it.””

“You mean you were caught.””

“I changed my mind.””

“No,” I said.

“You changed your strategy.””

The words landed.

Because they were true.

She looked at me with anger.

“You don’t know anything about what I’ve been through.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

For a moment, I thought she might finally speak.

Instead, she grabbed her coat.

“I’m leaving.””

Marcus stepped in front of the door.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“Move.””

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But firm.

“You’re going to tell me the truth.””

Her face softened.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I defended you for years. I explained things away. I made excuses.””

His voice broke slightly.

“But I can’t do that anymore.””

Brielle stared at him.

Then she looked at me.

And something changed.

The anger faded.

Replaced by something colder.

“I guess you’ll find out soon enough.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“Find out what?””

She smiled faintly.

A dangerous smile.

“The reason I knew this house would never really belong to you.””

Marcus froze.

Daniel looked up.

“What did you say?””

Brielle realized too late that she had revealed something.

She turned away.

“I said too much.””

“Yes,” I said.

“You did.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to know exactly what she means.””

Brielle didn’t answer.

Her phone buzzed again.

This time, she looked at it immediately.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Shock.

She slowly turned the screen toward us.

The message was from an unknown number.

A photo was attached.

Marcus looked first.

Then me.

The image showed a document.

An old document.

One I had never seen before.

And at the bottom was a signature.

My husband’s signature.

Marcus whispered:

“Dad?””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that signature.

I knew that handwriting.

But I also knew something else.

My husband had been dead for twelve years.

Daniel took the phone from Marcus.

His expression changed as he examined the image.

Then he looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter…”

“What?””

He swallowed.

“This document changes everything.””

I stared at the screen.

At the signature.

At the date.

At the name written beside it.

And for the first time that night, I wondered if Brielle’s secret wasn’t the biggest betrayal waiting for me.

May you like

Maybe the biggest betrayal happened years before she ever entered my family.

And maybe my own husband had left behind a secret that could destroy us all.
