Chapter 10: The Person I Never Suspected

The last sentence on the page stared back at me.

It was someone inside our family.

I read it again.

And again.

Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Someone inside our family.

Not a stranger.

Not Richard.

Not some distant enemy hiding in the shadows.

Family.

The word felt impossible.

I slowly lowered the letter.

Nobody spoke.

That silence told me more than any confession could.

I looked at Marcus first.

Because if there was one person in that circle I had always believed would never hurt me, it was him.

His face was devastated.

Not surprised.

Devastated.

And that was when my stomach dropped.

“You knew.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Nia—”

“You knew what this said.””

His silence answered.

My hands tightened around the letter.

“You knew someone in our family was responsible.””

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.””

A painful laugh escaped me.

“Of course.””

“Nia.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Every time I think I’ve reached the bottom of this, there’s another secret.””

Marcus’s eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I shook my head.

“That’s the problem.””

The tears I had been holding back finally fell.

“You all keep deciding what I can handle.””

Vanessa moved closer.

“Nia, please listen.””

I turned toward her.

“No. You listen.””

She stopped.

“You don’t get to be the only person who knows my story.””

Her face broke.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

My voice cracked.

“Because my entire life has been a story everyone edited before giving it to me.””

Daniel looked away.

Richard watched silently.

Almost like he was enjoying seeing them fall apart.

That made me angry.

I turned toward him.

“And you.””

His eyebrows lifted.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“You’ve been standing here acting like you’re the only one who knows the truth.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“Maybe I am.””

“No.””

I held up the letter.

“You’re not.””

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“You know who wrote this.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“I know many things.””

“Then tell me.””

He said nothing.

I looked around.

“Why is everyone suddenly quiet?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Nia, there’s something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“The person who hurt you wasn’t trying to hurt you.””

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

“Then explain it.””

He looked toward Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

“No.””

Marcus’s expression softened.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“Not like this.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at the letter again.

The handwriting was my mother’s.

The words were hers.

But the fear belonged to everyone.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Was it you?””

The question landed like a slap.

Her face collapsed.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I searched her eyes.

And I believed her.

That scared me.

Because after everything, some part of me still wanted to believe my mother.

“Then who?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Your grandmother.””

The world went silent.

“My grandmother?””

She nodded.

“My mother.””

I stared at her.

The woman I barely remembered.

The woman whose old photographs sat in a box in our attic.

The woman who died when I was young.

“She did something?””

Vanessa looked away.

“She made choices.””

Marcus stepped in.

“Choices that put you in the middle of something you never should have been part of.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Your grandmother knew about Richard.””

I looked at him.

“She knew him?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She introduced us.””

The words stunned me.

“You knew Richard because of my grandmother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She believed he could help our family.””

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

“She believed a lot of things.””

Richard finally spoke.

“Careful.””

Vanessa looked at him.

For the first time, she didn’t look afraid.

She looked angry.

“My mother trusted you.””

Richard’s expression remained cold.

“And your mother made mistakes.””

“You used her.””

“I used opportunities.””

The cruelty of his words made my skin crawl.

I looked at Marcus.

“Where were you in all of this?””

His eyes lowered.

“I was your mother’s friend.””

“Not her husband?””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“I met Vanessa after everything started.””

My heart slowed.

There was still more.

Always more.

“You weren’t there when she was with Daniel?””

“No.””

“Then how did you become my father?””

Marcus looked at me.

And the sadness in his eyes broke something inside me.

“Because when everyone else ran…”

He paused.

“I stayed.””

I looked away.

The graduation ceremony announcement played in the distance.

Students were being called.

Families were cheering.

My name was probably somewhere on that list.

But I couldn’t move.

Not yet.

Not until I understood.

Richard stepped forward.

“There is one more thing.””

Everyone looked at him.

I hated that he still had control over the room.

“What?””

He reached into his jacket.

This time, Marcus didn’t stop him.

Because maybe he knew.

Maybe he knew there was nothing left to hide.

Richard pulled out a photograph.

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

It was old.

A family photo.

My grandmother.

My mother.

A younger Marcus.

And a little girl.

Me.

But someone had been cut out.

A person removed from the picture.

I turned it over.

On the back was written:

The night we lost Nia.

My blood went cold.

Because I was standing there.

May you like

Alive.

So why had someone written that?
