Chapter 12: The Truth Nobody Burned

Nobody moved.

Anthony stood several feet away.

His words hung in the air.

“You should have burned the letter.””

My hands went cold.

Not because he was threatening us.

Because he sounded disappointed.

Like the secret escaping was an inconvenience.

Like my entire life was just a problem he had failed to contain.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew he was coming?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Anthony laughed.

“Still lying?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Anthony looked at him.

“You always were the hero, weren’t you?””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I was just the person who stayed.””

Something shifted in Anthony’s expression.

For a second, I saw jealousy.

“You think that makes you better?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Anthony looked at me.

“Nia.””

I hated hearing my name from him.

“What?””

He studied my face.

“You look like your mother.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s what you came here to say?””

“No.””

He looked at the letter in my hand.

“I came because you were never supposed to read that.””

My grip tightened.

“You knew about it?””

Anthony smiled.

“I knew everything.””

My stomach turned.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

He glanced around.

At Marcus.

At Daniel.

At Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“The truth is your mother wasn’t running from Richard.””

I waited.

“She wasn’t running from your father.””

I waited.

“She was running from what I did.””

The silence was instant.

Vanessa whispered:

“Anthony.””

His face softened.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology was unexpected.

But it didn’t erase anything.

I stared at him.

“What did you do?””

He looked down.

And for the first time, he looked ashamed.

“I made a choice.””

I shook my head.

“Another mistake?””

His eyes met mine.

“Yes.””

I almost laughed.

“You all love that word.””

He looked at the ground.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“Fix what?””

Anthony swallowed.

“Your family.””

I stared.

“You destroyed it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

Marcus looked surprised too.

Anthony took a breath.

“I was desperate.””

“For money?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Anthony continued.

“I owed people.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Careful.””

Anthony looked at him.

“You’re the reason I owed them.””

The air changed.

Again.

Another layer.

Another secret.

I looked at Richard.

“What does he mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Anthony laughed.

“Of course he won’t.””

He looked at me.

“That’s what he does.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t turn this into your revenge.””

Anthony looked at him.

“And you don’t get to pretend you’re innocent.””

Daniel went silent.

I felt trapped in a room full of people who all had pieces of the same nightmare.

“Tell me.””

Everyone looked at me.

I pointed at Anthony.

“Start from the beginning.””

He nodded slowly.

“When your mother was pregnant with you, Daniel discovered something.””

“What?””

“That Richard was involved in illegal deals.””

Vanessa looked down.

I looked at Richard.

He didn’t deny it.

Daniel continued.

“He wanted to expose him.””

Richard’s voice became cold.

“Daniel was young.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I was scared.””

That honesty surprised me.

Richard smiled.

“And fear makes people weak.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Fear makes people human.””

Anthony looked at me.

“Your father tried to leave.””

I looked at Daniel.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Because she was pregnant with you.””

My throat tightened.

Anthony continued.

“But Richard found out.””

The pieces started connecting.

“And then?””

Anthony looked at me.

“Then everyone started making choices.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I chose wrong.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“I should have trusted people sooner.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I should have told you.””

I wanted to forgive her.

A part of me did.

But another part still hurt.

Anthony reached into his pocket.

This time, nobody stopped him.

He removed a small folded paper.

“I have something else.””

Marcus frowned.

“What is that?””

Anthony looked at him.

“The document your mother hid.””

My heart raced.

“What document?””

Anthony looked at me.

“The one proving who protected you that night.””

Vanessa went pale.

“No.””

Anthony held it out.

“It’s time she knows.””

I looked at the paper.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

Everyone looked afraid.

Not of Anthony.

Of the document.

I slowly reached for it.

My fingers touched the edge.

And before I opened it, Marcus said quietly:

“Nia… before you read that, you need to know one thing.””

I looked up.

“What?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“The person who saved you that night…”

May you like

He swallowed.

“Was the person you were taught to hate.””
