Chapter 6: The Father I Never Knew
The name stayed in the air.
Daniel.
A name that had been hidden from me for twenty-two years.
A name that somehow belonged to a stranger and a piece of my own identity at the same time.
“No.””
Vanessa whispered it before anyone else could.
Marcus looked at her.
“He’s here.””
She shook her head.
“That’s impossible.””
“He just called.””
“You said he was gone.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“I said I didn’t know where he was.””
The words made Vanessa freeze.
I looked at Marcus.
“You knew he disappeared?””
He nodded slowly.
“After he left, nobody could find him.””
“But now he’s here?””
“Yes.””
My fingers tightened around the old photograph.
“Where?””
Marcus looked toward the entrance of the courtyard.
“He said he wanted to see you.””
My stomach twisted.
See me.
Not meet me.
Not introduce himself.
See me.
Like I was something he had been watching from a distance.
Vanessa stepped between me and the entrance.
“No.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Her eyes filled with panic.
“You don’t know what he’s like.””
I almost smiled.
“Neither do I.””
“That’s exactly why.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Did he hurt you?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
That was an answer.
My heart sank.
“Did he hurt you?””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“How?””
Marcus looked away.
“He hurt everyone around him.””
Vanessa whispered:
“He was charming.””
The way she said it told me everything.
Not loving.
Not missing.
Afraid.
“He could make anyone believe anything,” she continued.
I looked at her.
“Even you?””
Her eyes filled.
“Especially me.””
The words were quiet.
But they carried years.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Nia, you don’t have to see him.””
I looked at him.
“But I do.””
“Nia.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I spent my whole life with a missing piece.””
I held up the photograph.
“I deserve to know what that piece is.””
Marcus looked proud for a second.
Then afraid.
Like he knew I was brave.
And knew bravery could still hurt.
A security officer walked across the courtyard.
“Miss Carter?””
I turned.
“Yes?””
The officer looked uncertain.
“There’s a gentleman asking for you near the entrance.””
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“No.””
The officer looked confused.
“He said his name is Daniel Carter.””
The world went silent.
Even Marcus stopped breathing.
My last name.
His last name.
A name I had carried without knowing where it came from.
I looked toward the entrance.
A man stood several yards away.
Older than the photograph.
Different.
But familiar.
He had gray in his hair.
A tired face.
And my eyes.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then he took one step forward.
“Nia?””
Hearing my name from him felt wrong.
Like a stranger had opened a door that belonged to my childhood.
Vanessa whispered:
“Don’t.””
I looked back.
“Why?””
Her face broke.
“Because if he tells you his version first…”
She stopped.
“Then what?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel took another step.
Marcus moved slightly in front of me.
Not aggressively.
Protectively.
Daniel noticed.
A small smile crossed his face.
“So you’re Marcus.””
Marcus’s expression stayed cold.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I’ve waited a long time to meet you.””
I swallowed.
“Why?””
His face changed.
Regret.
Pain.
Something real.
“Because I made a mistake.””
Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.
“A mistake?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
The way he said her name made her step back.
Like she remembered being younger.
Like she remembered everything.
I looked between them.
Three adults.
Three different versions of my life.
And I was standing in the middle.
Daniel reached into his coat.
Marcus immediately reacted.
“Don’t.””
Daniel stopped.
Slowly, he removed his hand.
“I brought something for her.””
My heart raced.
Another letter.
Another card.
Another secret.
Daniel looked at me.
“I think you deserve to know what really happened the night your mother left.””
Vanessa went pale.
Marcus looked at me.
And I realized something terrifying.
Both of them were afraid of the same memory.
Daniel held out a small envelope.
“Nia…”
He whispered.
“This is the truth your mother never wanted you to see.””
I stared at the envelope.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at Marcus.
May you like
And before I could take it, Vanessa said the one sentence that made me question everything I believed.
“Daniel is not the person you should be afraid of.””
