Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back
Vanessa’s hand tightened around her phone.
For several seconds, she just stared at the screen.
No tears.
No anger.
No explanation.
Just fear.
“Mom?””
She looked up.
I had never seen her like that.
Not when she argued with Marcus.
Not when she admitted she lied.
Not even when the card appeared.
This was different.
This was the face of someone seeing a ghost.
Marcus noticed too.
“Who texted you?””
Vanessa locked her phone immediately.
“No one.””
The answer was too fast.
Too rehearsed.
I stared at her.
“Mom.””
She looked away.
“It’s nothing.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
His voice changed.
The anger disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
“You need to tell her.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not here.””
“Why not?””
“Because this isn’t about you.””
Marcus looked at her.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
I looked between them.
“Who was it?””
Neither answered.
I took a step back.
“Who was it?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Someone from before.””
The words felt empty.
Someone from before.
That was how adults described the people who changed your life.
Like they were just old photographs.
Like they didn’t leave scars.
Marcus looked at the card.
Then at Vanessa’s phone.
“You thought he would never come back.””
My breath caught.
“Who?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus answered.
“Your biological father.””
Everything around me blurred.
The campus.
The people.
The sounds.
All of it.
“He’s alive?””
Vanessa looked at me.
The silence was enough.
I felt something break inside.
“You told me he died.””
She swallowed.
“I thought he did.””
“You thought?””
My voice rose.
“You thought my father was dead?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Nia, please.””
“No.””
I stepped away.
“You don’t get to say please now.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Nia—”
I turned toward him.
“And you knew?””
His silence answered.
I laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because my brain couldn’t process the betrayal.
“You both knew.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“I knew pieces.””
“Pieces?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know he was alive?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
I looked away.
The man who raised me.
The man I trusted more than anyone.
Had also been protecting a secret.
Vanessa reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
“I need answers.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“No. I don’t think you do.””
My voice shook.
“I spent my entire life thinking I was abandoned by a father who died. Then I find out he might have been alive. Then I find out you both knew.””
A group of students walked past us laughing.
One of them smiled at me.
Probably thinking I was crying happy graduation tears.
They had no idea.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Your biological father wasn’t a good man.””
I looked at him.
“Then why hide him?””
“Because knowing someone is bad doesn’t erase the fact that they’re still your parent.””
Vanessa looked down.
“That’s why I wrote the letter.””
I turned toward her.
“You wrote it because you knew this would happen?””
She nodded.
“I knew someday you would ask.””
“And you still waited?””
Her face crumpled.
“I was afraid.””
I stared at her.
“Of what?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“Of losing you.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Because for the first time, I believed her.
But belief didn’t erase pain.
Marcus looked at the card.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He reached into his jacket again.
Not another letter.
Something smaller.
A photograph.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
It was old.
The edges were worn.
A young Vanessa stood beside a man I had never seen.
He was smiling.
And he had my eyes.
My hands went cold.
“That’s him?””
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s Daniel.””
I stared at the photograph.
A stranger who somehow looked like part of me.
“Why did you keep this?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because even though I wanted to forget him…”
She looked at me.
“I could never forget that he gave me you.””
Before I could respond, Marcus’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I watched him answer.
A few seconds passed.
Then he said:
“Where are you?””
My heart started racing.
“Marcus?””
He didn’t answer me.
He only listened.
Then his face went pale.
Vanessa noticed.
“What happened?””
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
The color disappeared from his face.
“He’s here.””
Nobody moved.
“Who?””
Marcus looked directly at me.
May you like
And the answer changed everything.
“Daniel.””
