Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Silence
Richard walked toward us slowly.
He wasn’t rushing.
He didn’t need to.
The way everyone reacted told me he already had power over the moment.
He was older, maybe in his fifties.
Perfect suit.
Perfect posture.
The kind of person who looked like he belonged anywhere.
But his eyes were different.
Cold.
Calculating.
They moved from Vanessa to Marcus.
Then to Daniel.
Then finally to me.
“Nia.””
Hearing my name from him made my skin crawl.
I stepped closer to Marcus without thinking.
Richard noticed.
A small smile appeared.
“Still protective, Marcus?””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Leave.””
Richard laughed softly.
“After twenty-two years, that’s your greeting?””
I looked at Marcus.
“You know him.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I turned to Vanessa.
“You know him too.””
She looked terrified.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Richard answered for her.
“I’m someone your mother knew before she met either of these men.””
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“Richard, don’t.””
He looked at her.
“Don’t what?””
His smile disappeared.
“Tell your daughter the truth?””
I felt anger rise.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked around.
“Truth.””
The word almost felt meaningless now.
“Why does nobody actually say it?””
Richard looked amused.
“Because the truth changes people.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Not her.””
Richard looked at him.
“You still think you can protect her?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I’m trying.””
Richard laughed.
“That’s interesting.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Considering you’re the one who raised her.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Richard ignored him.
“Tell me, Nia.””
I hated the way he said my name.
Like he was pretending to know me.
“Do you know why Marcus became your father?””
I looked at Marcus.
The question felt like another crack forming.
“Because he loved me.””
Richard smiled.
“That’s what you were told.””
My stomach tightened.
Marcus’s voice became dangerous.
“Walk away.””
Richard looked at him.
“Still afraid she’ll find out?””
I turned.
“Find out what?””
Silence.
Again.
Always silence.
I felt something inside me break.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I am done standing here while adults whisper around me.””
My voice shook.
“But I am not a child.””
Vanessa started crying.
“Nia.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I loved you.””
The words hurt her.
Good.
“Do you understand how painful it is to realize the people who raised you didn’t trust you with your own life?””
Nobody moved.
I looked at Richard.
“So talk.””
He tilted his head.
“Talk?””
“Yes.””
I stepped forward.
“If you know something, say it.””
Richard looked pleased.
Like he had been waiting for that invitation.
“Your mother wasn’t running from Daniel.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Richard continued.
“She was running from me.””
The air disappeared.
Vanessa whispered:
“Stop.””
I looked at her.
“Is that true?””
She couldn’t answer.
Richard continued.
“She came to me before she disappeared.””
Daniel looked furious.
“You don’t get to rewrite history.””
Richard smiled.
“I’m not rewriting anything.””
He reached into his pocket.
Marcus immediately reacted.
“Don’t.””
Richard stopped.
Slowly, he removed a photograph.
Not a weapon.
A photograph.
He held it toward me.
“You should see this.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“A piece of the truth.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Nia, don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face was full of warning.
“Because Richard has spent years using the truth as a weapon.””
Richard smiled.
“And you’ve spent years hiding it.””
The two men stared at each other.
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Vanessa finally spoke.
Her voice barely existed.
“Richard knew your biological father.””
I turned.
“Daniel?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her face collapsed.
“Because Daniel worked for him.””
I stared.
“What?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Richard said nothing.
And somehow, his silence confirmed it.
Marcus looked at me.
“There’s more.””
Of course there was.
There was always more.
I felt tears burn my eyes.
“Who was my father?””
Nobody answered.
Then Richard said:
“Someone who wasn’t supposed to survive long enough for you to meet him.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel looked broken.
For the first time, I saw fear on his face.
Not fear of Richard.
Fear of me knowing.
“I wasn’t a good man when I met your mother.””
Vanessa cried quietly.
“I know.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I made choices.””
“What kind of choices?””
He looked at me.
“The kind that made your mother believe disappearing was the only way to save you.””
A gust of wind moved through the courtyard.
My graduation cap almost lifted from my head.
I held it down.
Just like I was trying to hold my entire life together.
Richard stepped closer.
“And now you know why everyone lied.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“I know everyone lied.””
I looked at each of them.
“But I still don’t know who told the truth.””
Richard smiled.
“Then you should ask the person who raised you.””
My eyes moved to Marcus.
He looked devastated.
Because he knew.
Because whatever came next would change everything.
“Marcus?””
He swallowed.
“Nia…”
“What happened?””
He looked at the sealed card still sitting in my hand.
Then he said:
“The night your mother left, she didn’t leave you alone.””
My heart stopped.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then at Daniel.
May you like
Then back at me.
“She left you with me because someone was coming for you.””
