Chapter 13: The Person I Was Told To Hate

The document felt heavier than paper should feel.

My fingers rested on the edge, but I couldn’t open it.

Not yet.

Because Marcus’s words kept replaying in my head.

The person who saved you that night was the person you were taught to hate.

I looked around.

At Vanessa.

At Daniel.

At Anthony.

At Richard.

Four people.

Four versions of the truth.

And somehow, every single one of them had been wrong.

“Who?””

My voice barely came out.

Marcus looked down.

“I think you already know.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My hands tightened.

“No, I don’t.””

Vanessa started crying.

Daniel looked away.

Anthony closed his eyes.

And Richard…

Richard smiled.

That was the first clue.

I turned toward him.

“It was you.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard’s smile faded slightly.

“You’re smarter than they gave you credit for.””

My stomach turned.

“You saved me?””

He didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“Not the way you think.””

I looked at him.

“Then explain.””

Marcus took a breath.

“The night everything happened, Richard was the reason we were all afraid.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“But he was also the reason you survived.””

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

Marcus looked at the document in my hand.

“Open it.””

I unfolded the paper.

It was a legal document.

Old.

Yellowed.

Official.

At the top was my name.

My birth name.

Below it were several signatures.

I scanned the page.

Then I saw it.

A signature that made my heart stop.

Richard Hayes.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Richard.

“You signed this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

“Because your mother was right about one thing.””

I waited.

“She had to get you away from me.””

The honesty shocked me.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You admit it?””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The entire courtyard seemed to disappear.

“I was dangerous back then.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Back then?””

Richard ignored him.

“I made choices that hurt people.””

“People like my father?””

“Yes.””

“People like my mother?””

“Yes.””

“Me?””

His eyes met mine.

And for the first time, I saw regret.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Because I expected denial.

I expected another excuse.

Not guilt.

Richard looked at the document.

“But when I found out someone else was trying to hurt you…”

He stopped.

“Who?””

His eyes moved toward Anthony.

Anthony looked away.

My heart dropped.

“Anthony?””

Anthony swallowed.

“I was desperate.””

The anger came instantly.

“You were going to hurt me?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I was going to use information about you.””

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””

“No.””

He lowered his head.

“It isn’t.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Not everything.””

“But enough.””

“Yes.””

I felt exhausted.

Years of secrets.

Years of people making decisions.

I looked at Marcus.

“And you?””

His eyes filled.

“I knew enough to keep you safe.””

“Not enough to tell me.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

But it also felt different.

Because Marcus wasn’t defending himself.

He was accepting the pain.

I looked at the document again.

“What does this prove?””

Marcus answered.

“It proves Richard helped us disappear.””

I looked at Richard.

“Why?””

He looked at the ground.

“Because I realized I had become the danger.””

The words surprised me.

“You protected me from yourself?””

“Yes.””

I studied him.

The man everyone feared.

The man everyone blamed.

The man who had walked into my graduation and shattered my life.

“You could have left us alone.””

“I should have.””

“Why didn’t you?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because your mother looked at me and said one thing.””

“What?””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“She said, ‘If you ever cared about me, protect my daughter.’”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

“You asked him?””

She nodded through tears.

“I didn’t know who else to ask.””

The truth was messy.

Nobody was innocent.

Nobody was completely evil.

Everyone had made choices.

And every choice had reached me.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Nia.””

I looked at him.

“I owe you more than an explanation.””

I didn’t answer.

He continued.

“I spent years believing staying away was protecting you.””

His voice broke.

“But I was wrong.””

I looked at him.

“Why did you really leave?””

He swallowed.

“Because I was ashamed.””

The answer surprised me.

“Of what?””

“Of who I was.””

He looked at Marcus.

“Marcus became the father you deserved because I wasn’t the man you needed.””

The words were painful.

But honest.

A silence fell over us.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I should have told you everything.””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The graduation ceremony continued behind us.

People were smiling.

Taking pictures.

Celebrating.

And I realized something.

My life hadn’t been ruined by the truth.

It had been trapped by the lies.

I folded the document.

For the first time all day, I took a breath.

“I need time.””

Nobody argued.

Marcus nodded.

“You deserve that.””

I looked at him.

“Will you still be there?””

His face broke.

“Nia.””

“I need to know.””

He stepped closer.

“Every day I’ve been alive.””

The answer destroyed me.

Because that was Marcus.

The man who stayed.

I looked at Vanessa.

“I’m not ready.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I’ll wait.””

Richard turned away.

I stopped him.

“Richard.””

He looked back.

“Yes?””

I held the document.

“I don’t forgive you.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“But…”

I looked at the people around me.

“My life is mine now.””

A small sadness crossed his face.

“I’m glad.””

Then he walked away.

And for the first time in twenty-two years…

Nobody was deciding my story for me.
