Chapter 11 - OLIVIA FINALLY HAD TO ANSWER WITHOUT HER FATHERThe school held a formal disciplinary hearing.

Richard tried to speak for Olivia.
The panel stopped him.
“Your daughter can answer.”
Olivia looked terrified.
For once, no cheer squad.
No cafeteria audience.
No father interrupting.
She was asked:
“Did you intentionally push Emma’s tray into her face?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She was staring at me.”
Emma almost laughed when she heard.
The panel continued.
“Had she spoken to you?”
“No.”
“Threatened you?”
“No.”
“Touched you?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Olivia started crying.
“Because everybody was acting like she was better than me.”
There it was.
Not poverty.
Not status exactly.
Emma had become threatening because she refused to stay beneath the hierarchy Olivia understood.
Scholarship student.
Quiet.
Supposed to be grateful.
Instead, Emma documented.
Reported.
Excelled.
Did not fear her correctly.
Olivia said:
“She was trying to ruin my life.”
The panel asked:
May you like
“By reporting your conduct?”
Olivia had no answer.
