Richard Harper’s family had pledged twelve million dollars toward a new science wing.
Only three million had actually been transferred.
The remaining pledge depended on “continued confidence in school leadership.”
Everyone knew what that meant.
Not written.
Never explicit.
Just enough.
When Olivia faced discipline the previous year, Richard reminded board members of the pledge.
One board member emailed:
“We should avoid unnecessary reputational friction with major donors.”
That phrase became infamous later.
Unnecessary reputational friction.
Meaning a bullied child.
Another email:
“Can this be handled relationally rather than formally?”
Meaning no record.
No suspension.
No consequences.
Money had not directly purchased immunity.
It had created fear.
And frightened administrators did the rest themselves.
That was more believable.
And more dangerous.
