Chapter 4 - OLIVIA’S FATHER ARRIVEDTwenty minutes after the cafeteria incident, Olivia’s father stormed into the administrative wing.

Richard Harper.

Developer.

Donor.

Board member.

The new football complex was called Harper Athletic Center.

He entered the conference room like he owned it.

“What happened?”

Olivia ran to him.

“Dad.”

He looked at the sauce still staining Emma’s sleeve.

Then at the officials.

“This is being blown out of proportion.”

Dr. Monroe stared.

“A student assaulted another student in front of hundreds of witnesses.”

“They’re teenagers.”

Olivia nodded.

“It was just food.”

Richard looked at Emma.

“Surely we can handle this without ruining anyone’s future.”

Emma said nothing.

He continued.

“Olivia has college applications.”

That sentence told Emma exactly who he was.

Not:

Is Emma okay?

Not:

What did my daughter do?

College applications.

Superintendent Grant’s jaw tightened.

Dr. Monroe asked:

“Mr. Harper, were you aware of Emma Bennett’s previous complaint?”

He paused.

Too long.

“No.”

Lie.

Dr. Monroe opened another folder.

“Your email appears on correspondence regarding it.”

His face changed.

Olivia looked at him.

“Dad?”

Emma felt cold.

Richard said:

“I receive hundreds of messages.”

Dr. Monroe read aloud.

“Thank you for flagging this. I agree formal discipline would be disproportionate and damaging.”

The room went silent.

Richard’s own words.

Principal Collins closed his eyes.

Emma understood.

This was not one cowardly principal.

The board had been involved.

Maybe not officially.

But influence had entered the process.

Richard had known.

His daughter knew she was protected.

That was why she smiled after slamming a tray into someone’s face.

Consequences had always belonged to other people.
