Chapter 12: The Soldier Who Remembered
Nia Carter barely slept.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the same moment.
The explosion.
The confusion.
The voices around her.
The feeling that something was wrong.
But there was one problem.
She couldn’t remember.
And that scared her more than anything.
The next morning, she sat in the recovery room.
A notebook rested in front of her.
She wrote everything she remembered.
The smell.
The sounds.
The people.
The moments before the accident.
Most of the page remained blank.
Marcus entered quietly.
“You’re still awake.””
Nia didn’t look up.
“I’m trying to remember.””
Marcus sat across from her.
“Maybe you shouldn’t force it.””
She looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because sometimes the mind blocks things for a reason.””
Nia looked back at the notebook.
“I’m tired of things being hidden from me.””
Marcus understood.
“I know.””
A silence passed.
Then the door opened.
Cole entered.
He looked nervous.
“I found something.””
Nia looked up.
“What now?””
Cole held a small storage device.
“This was hidden in my locker.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why would someone hide something in your locker?””
Cole looked at him.
“To make sure it was found.””
That answer worried everyone.
Marcus took the device.
“Where did you get this?””
“Inside a false compartment.””
Nia stared.
“Who put it there?””
Cole shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus connected it to a secure laptop.
A single audio file appeared.
No title.
No date.
Just a recording.
Marcus played it.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
Nia immediately recognized it.
Her own voice.
“I don’t know if anyone will believe me.””
She froze.
That was her.
But she had never recorded this.
The audio continued.
“If something happens to me, it wasn’t an accident.””
Marcus and Cole exchanged looks.
Nia listened.
Her own voice sounded frightened.
“I found out what they’re doing.””
A pause.
“They’re using soldiers.””
Nia’s breathing changed.
The recording continued.
“I saw the transfer.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“What transfer?””
The audio crackled.
Then her voice returned.
“The person responsible isn’t hiding outside the unit.””
A pause.
“They’re standing beside us.””
Nia closed her eyes.
The recording ended.
Everyone stayed silent.
Then Marcus spoke.
“When was this recorded?””
Cole checked the file information.
His expression changed.
“Two days before the accident.””
Nia looked at him.
Two days.
She had known something.
She had discovered something.
And someone had erased it.
Marcus looked at her.
“Do you remember recording this?””
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
Cole stared at the device.
“Then someone wanted you to find it.””
Nia looked at the audio file.
A message from the past.
A warning from herself.
She reached for the notebook.
Slowly, she wrote one sentence.
*I knew something was wrong.*
Then another memory surfaced.
Small.
Almost invisible.
A voice before the explosion.
Someone saying her name.
Not shouting.
Whispering.
“Nia…”
She looked up suddenly.
Marcus noticed.
“What?””
“I remember something.””
Everyone became still.
“What?””
Nia closed her eyes.
“There was someone there.””
“Who?””
She tried to see the face.
The image was blurry.
But the voice was clear.
A voice she knew.
A voice she trusted.
“I heard them say my name.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What did they say?””
Nia opened her eyes.
“They said…”
She stopped.
Because the memory returned all at once.
The hand on her shoulder.
The person standing beside her.
The final words before the explosion.
“I’m sorry.””
Nia looked at Marcus.
Her face went pale.
“I know who was there.””
Cole whispered:
“Who?””
Nia looked between them.
And the answer terrified her.
Because the person who stood beside her before the accident…
Was the same person who saved her life afterward.
The same person who helped her recover.
The same person everyone trusted.
Nia whispered the name.
And Marcus went completely silent.
Because he knew.
May you like
She wasn’t remembering a stranger.
She was remembering him.
