Chapter 4: The Name Behind the Warning

The dining hall doors opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The person standing there was someone Nia Carter had trusted.

Someone whose presence made the room colder than any threat Cole Harris had ever made.

Major Evelyn Brooks stepped inside.

Black American woman. Late 30s. Perfect uniform. Calm expression.

The kind of officer who never raised her voice because she never needed to.

Every soldier in the room respected her.

Including Nia.

Especially Nia.

For years, Major Brooks had been one of the officers who encouraged her career. She had reviewed her evaluations. Supported her return after injury. Told her that a setback did not erase everything she had earned.

Nia stared at her.

“No.””

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Marcus looked at her.

“You know her?””

Nia didn’t answer immediately.

Because she did.

And that was the problem.

Major Brooks walked farther into the dining hall.

“Captain Reed.””

Marcus’s face remained unreadable.

“Major Brooks.””

The entire room felt the tension.

Cole looked at the floor.

That alone told Nia everything.

He wasn’t surprised to see her.

He was terrified.

Marcus noticed.

“So this is who you were afraid of.””

Brooks looked at Cole.

“Careful with your assumptions, Captain.””

Marcus didn’t blink.

“Then explain why Sergeant Harris looks like he just saw his career disappear.””

Brooks ignored the comment.

Her eyes moved toward Nia.

“Sergeant Carter.””

Nia tightened her grip on her crutch.

“Major.””

A pause.

Then Brooks said something Nia never expected.

“I’m sorry.””

The words confused everyone.

Especially Nia.

Sorry?

After everything?

After Cole had pushed her to the ground?

After someone had watched her?

Nia stared at her.

“For what?””

Brooks looked around the room.

“Not here.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Brooks looked at him.

“This is an internal matter.””

“No,” Marcus replied.

“This became an internal matter the moment one of my soldiers was targeted.””

The room went quiet.

Brooks studied him.

“You’re making this bigger than it needs to be.””

Nia felt something shift.

That sentence.

Small.

Careful.

But wrong.

Because innocent people didn’t say things like that.

Marcus heard it too.

“Bigger?””

He pointed toward Nia.

“She was injured.””

Brooks remained calm.

“And she’s standing.””

Nia’s eyes hardened.

The sentence felt like a slap.

Not because Brooks was cruel.

Because it sounded like she had already decided the outcome mattered more than what happened.

Nia stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Brooks looked at her.

“Knew what?””

“That someone was watching me.””

Silence.

Nia continued.

“You knew something was happening.””

Brooks didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Marcus’s expression changed.

“You had information.””

Brooks looked at him.

“Captain—”

“No.””

Marcus’s voice became sharper.

“You don’t get to walk in here, apologize, and avoid answering.””

Cole finally spoke.

“Major…”

Brooks turned toward him.

And Cole immediately stopped.

That reaction was enough.

Nia noticed.

Marcus noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Marcus looked at Cole.

“You were following orders.””

Cole said nothing.

“Whose orders?””

Still nothing.

Brooks closed her eyes briefly.

Like she was tired.

Not guilty.

Tired.

That bothered Nia more.

Because guilt would have meant regret.

Tired meant this had been going on longer than anyone knew.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Major Brooks.””

She looked at him.

“Tell us.””

Brooks looked toward the security camera.

Then at the soldiers watching.

Finally, she sighed.

“There are things you don’t understand.””

Nia almost laughed.

“Everyone says that right before they refuse to explain.””

Brooks looked at her.

“You think this was about your injury.””

Nia froze.

“What?””

Brooks continued.

“It wasn’t.””

The room became completely silent.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“Then what was it about?””

Brooks looked at Nia.

“You found something.””

Nia felt her stomach tighten.

“I found what?””

Brooks didn’t answer.

That was when Marcus’s phone vibrated.

He looked down.

A message from the investigation team.

His expression changed.

Nia immediately noticed.

“What happened?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then showed her.

The message was short.

*Security footage compromised. Original recording deleted.*

Nia stared.

“How?””

Marcus looked at Brooks.

“That’s what I’d like to know.””

Brooks remained silent.

And suddenly, Nia understood.

The person who helped Cole wasn’t just someone with information.

They had power.

Access.

Control.

Someone had been protecting them.

Cole looked at Brooks.

“Major, you said nobody would get hurt.””

Brooks turned sharply.

“Not another word.””

The entire room froze.

Because that wasn’t the voice of someone confused.

That was the voice of someone afraid.

Cole lowered his head.

Nia looked between them.

“You told him this wouldn’t hurt me.””

Brooks said nothing.

Nia’s voice dropped.

“You knew.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Major Brooks, you’re coming with me.””

Brooks looked at him.

Then at Nia.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Nia stared.

“By letting someone attack me?””

Brooks had no answer.

As Marcus escorted her away, Cole remained behind.

But before leaving, Brooks stopped.

She looked back at Nia.

And whispered something only she could hear.

“Check your medical records.””

Nia frowned.

“What?””

Brooks’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely scared.

“Someone changed them.””

Then she walked away.

May you like

And Nia realized the fall in the dining hall wasn’t the beginning.

It was the moment someone wanted her to stop looking.
