Chapter 9: The Witness Who Disappeared

Nia Carter stared at the photograph.

She didn’t blink.

She didn’t move.

Because the person standing behind her in the image was someone she remembered clearly.

Someone who had told her everything would be okay.

Someone who had held her hand while she learned to walk again.

Captain Marcus Reed.

The room felt impossible.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Nia turned the screen toward him.

His face changed.

For the first time since this began, Marcus Reed looked completely shocked.

“That’s not possible.””

Cole looked between them.

“Captain?””

Marcus stepped closer.

The photograph showed the accident site.

Nia standing near the equipment area.

Seconds before everything went wrong.

And behind her…

Marcus.

Not helping.

Not approaching.

Watching.

Nia looked at him.

“Explain.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That hurt more than anything.

Because silence had become the language of betrayal.

“Nia.””

“No.””

She stepped back.

Her crutch hit the floor harder than she intended.

“Don’t say my name like you don’t understand why I’m asking.””

Marcus looked at the picture again.

“I wasn’t there.””

The answer came too quickly.

Nia noticed.

“So you know exactly where you were.””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

Marcus hesitated.

Cole watched him carefully.

“Captain?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I was there.””

The room went silent.

Nia felt her chest tighten.

“You just said you weren’t.””

“I wasn’t at the exact location.””

She stared.

“That’s not what the picture shows.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“The picture is incomplete.””

Nia shook her head.

“Convenient.””

Marcus looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

Because he understood.

Trust had already been damaged.

Not just by Dr. Whitaker.

By everyone.

“I was investigating something that day,” Marcus said.

Nia stared.

“What?””

“Equipment reports.””

Cole looked confused.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Nia.

“Because I suspected someone was altering safety records.””

Nia froze.

“You knew?””

Marcus nodded.

“I didn’t know how far it went.””

The anger inside her shifted.

Not disappearing.

Changing.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus looked down.

“Because I thought I could protect you.””

Nia laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“Everyone says that.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

Because he knew she was right.

Cole stepped forward.

“So you were trying to help her?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Cole looked at the picture.

“Then why hide it?””

Marcus stared at the floor.

“Because I failed.””

The honesty surprised Nia.

Marcus continued.

“The day of your accident, I found evidence that someone was interfering with equipment inspections.””

He looked at her.

“I was trying to find who.””

“And?””

“I was too late.””

The words hung there.

Nia looked at the picture again.

“What happened after?””

Marcus was silent.

Then:

“Someone erased the evidence.””

Cole whispered:

“Dr. Whitaker.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus’s expression was grim.

“Dr. Whitaker wasn’t the one in control.””

Nia felt a chill.

“Then who?””

Before Marcus could answer, the office lights went out.

Complete darkness.

A second later, emergency lighting activated.

But something was different.

The computer screen was blank.

The photo was gone.

The files were gone.

Everything disappeared.

Marcus immediately moved toward the door.

“It’s happening again.””

The door opened.

A soldier stood outside.

Breathing heavily.

“Captain Reed.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What happened?””

The soldier looked at Nia.

Then lowered his voice.

“They found Dr. Whitaker.””

Nobody moved.

Nia’s stomach dropped.

“Found him?””

The soldier nodded.

“He’s gone.””

Marcus frowned.

“Gone where?””

The soldier hesitated.

Then:

“He disappeared from the facility ten minutes ago.””

Cole looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.””

The soldier shook his head.

“There’s more.””

Marcus waited.

The soldier handed him a small evidence bag.

Inside was a medical badge.

Dr. Whitaker’s.

And written on the back was a message.

Nia leaned closer.

Marcus read it aloud.

“I’m sorry.””

Everyone stared.

Then he flipped the badge over.

Another sentence was written underneath.

*I WAS NEVER THE ONE YOU SHOULD HAVE FEARED.*

Nia looked at Marcus.

Then at Cole.

Then at the empty office.

Someone had removed Dr. Whitaker.

Someone powerful enough to erase files.

Lock rooms.

Control systems.

And now eliminate the person who knew the truth.

The soldier cleared his throat.

“Captain.””

Marcus looked up.

“Yes?””

“There was one more thing.””

“What?””

The soldier looked at Nia.

“We found out who accessed Dr. Whitaker’s office before he disappeared.””

Nia felt her heartbeat slow.

Because she already knew.

The soldier handed Marcus a report.

Marcus read the name.

His face changed.

Nia watched him.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at her.

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.

“It was you.””

Nia stared.

“What?””

Marcus handed her the report.

The access log showed her ID.

Her credentials.

Her authorization.

Used at 02:13 that morning.

A time when she was asleep.

A time when she had never entered the building.

Nia looked up.

“I didn’t do this.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone believed her.

But the evidence said otherwise.

Then her phone vibrated.

One new message.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

May you like

Only one sentence appeared.

*Now they’ll think you’re the enemy.*
