Chapter 13: The Truth Buried Under Trust

The room became silent after Nia Carter said his name.

Not because nobody heard her.

Because everyone did.

Captain Marcus Reed stood completely still.

For the first time since this nightmare began, he had no immediate answer.

No explanation.

No command.

No calm voice telling everyone what to do next.

Just silence.

Nia looked at him.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

Marcus didn’t speak.

Her expression changed.

The smallest crack of disappointment appeared.

“Marcus.””

He closed his eyes.

And that was when she knew.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he didn’t deny it.

Cole stepped back slowly.

“Captain…”

Marcus looked at him.

“Not now.””

Cole shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was different.

Not afraid.

Angry.

“You were there.””

Marcus looked away.

Nia’s hands tightened around her crutches.

The memory returned in pieces.

A hand on her shoulder.

A voice beside her.

The smell of smoke.

The sound of metal breaking.

And Marcus.

Standing beside her.

Before everything disappeared.

“You were the one who found me.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Nia stared.

“You were there before the explosion.””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than any lie.

Because now she knew.

He had been carrying the truth all along.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I was investigating.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He took a breath.

“I was following a lead.””

“About General Avery?””

Marcus nodded.

“He was moving equipment through unofficial channels.””

Nia looked confused.

“And I was involved?””

“No.””

“Then why was I there?””

Marcus looked down.

“Because you found something.””

Her heart sank.

“What?””

Marcus walked toward the table.

Slowly.

Like every step carried the weight of years.

“Two days before the accident, you reported unusual activity.””

Nia frowned.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

Marcus’s voice became quieter.

“Because after the explosion, you couldn’t remember everything.””

Cole looked at him.

“You knew her memory was damaged.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you let everyone think it was just the injury.””

Marcus looked away.

“I was trying to protect her.””

Nia laughed softly.

Again.

That painful sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Marcus accepted it.

“I deserved that.””

He reached into his pocket and removed an old identification card.

Not his.

Nia looked at it.

“What is that?””

Marcus placed it on the table.

“It belonged to the person who was supposed to be with you that day.””

Cole picked it up.

His face changed.

“This is…”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Nia looked between them.

“Who?””

Marcus answered:

“Dr. Whitaker.””

The room froze.

Nia stared.

“Wait.””

She looked at the card.

“Dr. Whitaker was there?””

Marcus nodded.

“He was part of the inspection team.””

“But he told me…”

“He lied.””

The word landed heavily.

Marcus continued.

“Whitaker discovered Avery’s operation. But instead of exposing it, he tried to cover his own involvement.””

Nia looked at the evidence around her.

“So he tried to erase me.””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I found out too late.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You knew something was wrong after the accident.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my records were changed.””

“Yes.””

“You knew someone was watching me.””

“Yes.””

She stared.

“And you still said nothing.””

Marcus had no defense.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Nia looked away.

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

The honesty surprised her.

Marcus looked at Cole.

“Cole wasn’t the only person manipulated.””

Cole frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus answered:

“Someone used my position too.””

Nia looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus pulled out another file.

“This was sent to me after the accident.””

He opened it.

A classified order.

Nia read the words.

*Maintain observation. Prevent unnecessary exposure.*

Her eyes widened.

“You were ordered to watch me.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“By Avery?””

“No.””

The room became tense.

“Then who?””

Marcus hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified Nia.

“By someone higher.””

Before anyone could continue, the alarm sounded.

Not a security alarm.

An evacuation alarm.

Marcus immediately stood.

“That’s impossible.””

Cole looked outside.

Soldiers were moving quickly through the hallway.

“What’s happening?””

Marcus checked his phone.

His face changed.

Nia noticed.

“What?””

He looked at her.

“Command issued an arrest order.””

“For who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

She already knew.

A second later, the announcement came through the speakers.

“Sergeant Nia Carter is to be detained immediately for unauthorized access, evidence tampering, and classified information theft.””

The room went silent.

Cole looked at Nia.

“They’re moving now.””

Marcus grabbed his equipment.

“You need to leave.””

Nia stared.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

“Are you helping me escape?””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

He paused.

“I’m helping you survive.””

The door opened.

Security personnel appeared.

Marcus stepped in front of Nia.

“Wait.””

The soldiers stopped.

A tense silence filled the hallway.

Then Marcus removed his own access badge.

And placed it in Nia’s hand.

“Find the person who gave the order.””

Nia looked at him.

“What about you?””

Marcus looked back.

“I’ll make sure they have someone else to blame.””

The soldiers moved closer.

Nia didn’t want to leave.

But Marcus gave her one final look.

A look that said everything.

Trust me.

May you like

She turned.

And disappeared into the hallway.
