Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Smile
Nia Carter had spent months trying to understand the moment her life changed.
The explosion.
The injury.
The hospital room.
The long nights when she wondered if she would ever walk normally again.
She had replayed that day thousands of times.
But she had never imagined the person who destroyed her future would be someone who stood beside her afterward.
Someone who smiled.
Someone who told her everything would be okay.
The frozen image on the screen remained in front of her.
Marcus Reed stared at the monitor.
Cole Harris looked like he wanted to disappear.
And Nia stood completely still.
“Say the name,” Marcus ordered.
Nia didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
Because saying it would make it real.
Marcus looked at the screen again.
“The person in this footage accessed your records the night they were changed.””
Nia finally spoke.
“Dr. Daniel Whitaker.””
Cole looked at her.
“You know him.””
Nia nodded slowly.
“He was the medical officer assigned to my recovery.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“The same person who signed your injury reports?””
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
Nia remembered him.
The calm voice.
The careful explanations.
The way he would sit beside her hospital bed and tell her not to blame herself.
“You’re lucky,” he had said once.
Nia had looked at him.
“Lucky?””
He had smiled gently.
“You survived.””
At the time, those words had comforted her.
Now they felt different.
Marcus noticed her expression.
“What did he tell you after the accident?””
Nia looked at the screen.
“Everything.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She swallowed.
“He told me there was no one to blame.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“And you believed him.””
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Not because she was ashamed.
Because she had trusted someone who knew exactly how to earn it.
Cole stepped closer.
“I saw him once.””
Nia turned.
“When?””
“Before the dining hall incident.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why didn’t you mention this?””
Cole looked down.
“Because I was already scared.””
Nia stared.
“You saw him with you?””
Cole shook his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“He saw me.””
The room went silent.
Cole continued.
“I was told to watch you.””
Nia’s jaw tightened.
“And Dr. Whitaker knew?””
Cole nodded.
“He met me two days before I pushed your crutch.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Where?””
Cole hesitated.
“An empty storage room near the medical wing.””
“What did he say?””
Cole looked at Nia.
“He said you were asking questions you shouldn’t ask.””
Nia felt anger rise.
“What questions?””
Cole looked away.
“The accident.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why would a doctor care about that?””
Cole laughed bitterly.
“That’s what I wondered.””
Nia stared at the screen.
Then something clicked.
A memory.
A small moment she had forgotten.
After her accident, Dr. Whitaker had visited her room.
Not once.
Many times.
But one night, he had asked something strange.
Not about her pain.
Not about her recovery.
About her memory.
“Do you remember everything from that day?””
She remembered answering:
“Most of it.””
He had looked concerned.
Too concerned.
At the time, she thought he cared.
Now she wondered what he was afraid she remembered.
Marcus noticed her expression.
“What?””
Nia looked at him.
“He asked me about my memory.””
“When?””
“During recovery.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What exactly did he ask?””
Nia closed her eyes.
“He asked if I remembered what happened before the explosion.””
Cole went pale.
“Before?””
Nia looked at him.
“You know something.””
Cole shook his head.
“No.””
But his voice said otherwise.
Marcus noticed too.
“Cole.””
Cole looked exhausted.
“I don’t know the details.””
“Then tell us what you know.””
Cole stayed silent.
Then he finally said:
“I heard Dr. Whitaker talking to someone.””
“When?””
“Before I was assigned to watch you.””
Marcus waited.
“What did he say?””
Cole looked at Nia.
“He said…”
His voice lowered.
“She shouldn’t have survived.””
The words hit the room like a weapon.
Nia felt the air leave her lungs.
Marcus immediately looked at her.
“Nia.””
She didn’t respond.
Because suddenly every memory felt suspicious.
Every conversation.
Every kindness.
Every reassuring word.
Someone had wanted her gone.
And someone had made sure she survived.
But why?
Marcus grabbed his phone.
“I’m contacting command.””
Nia stopped him.
“No.””
He looked surprised.
“No?””
“If Dr. Whitaker has access to my records, he knows how systems work.””
Marcus frowned.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying he’ll know we’re coming.””
Cole looked toward the door.
“He already does.””
Everyone turned.
Cole pointed at the security monitor.
The camera feed had changed.
A new message appeared.
Not from an unknown number.
From the system itself.
*ACCESS DENIED.*
Marcus walked closer.
“That’s impossible.””
Nia stared.
Then another line appeared.
*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST ALONE.*
Her heartbeat increased.
Cole whispered:
“He’s watching.””
A final message appeared.
*COME TO THE MEDICAL WING IF YOU WANT ANSWERS.*
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“No.””
But Nia was already looking at the screen.
Because she understood something.
Dr. Whitaker wanted them there.
Which meant the truth was there too.
Marcus looked at her.
“You’re not going.””
Nia grabbed her crutches.
“Yes, I am.””
“Nia—”
She looked at him.
“Captain.””
Her voice was steady.
“For months, everyone decided what I could handle.””
She moved toward the door.
“I’m done being protected from the truth.””
Marcus followed.
Cole hesitated.
Then stood.
Nia looked back.
“You’re coming?””
Cole nodded.
“I owe you.””
May you like
As they walked toward the medical wing, none of them noticed the security camera above them slowly turning.
Following every step.
