Chapter 8: The File That Changed Everything
The medical wing was quieter than the rest of the facility.
Too quiet.
Nia Carter hated that.
A place that once represented recovery now felt like a place hiding something.
The hallway lights reflected off the clean floors.
The same halls where she had learned to walk again.
The same walls where she had believed she was safe.
Marcus walked ahead.
Cole stayed behind.
Nia moved between them.
Her crutches tapped softly.
Each sound felt louder than it should.
They reached Dr. Whitaker’s office.
The door was unlocked.
That bothered Marcus immediately.
He raised his hand.
“Stay back.””
He entered first.
Nothing.
No one.
The office looked normal.
Desk.
Computer.
Medical files.
A framed photo.
Everything arranged perfectly.
Too perfectly.
Nia entered slowly.
“This is where he worked on my recovery.””
Marcus looked around.
“Something is wrong.””
Cole nodded.
“He knew we’d come.””
Marcus approached the computer.
The screen was already on.
A single file was open.
Nia saw her name.
Her stomach tightened.
Marcus clicked it.
The document loaded.
It wasn’t a medical report.
It was an observation file.
Her picture appeared at the top.
*SUBJECT: SERGEANT NIA CARTER*
Nia froze.
“Subject?””
Marcus kept reading.
The file contained notes.
Not about her injury.
About her behavior.
Her questions.
Her conversations.
Her movements.
Cole whispered:
“He was tracking you.””
Nia stepped closer.
One line caught her attention.
*Recovery successful. Subject demonstrates increased curiosity regarding incident details.*
She stared.
“Increased curiosity?””
Marcus looked at her.
“What happened next?””
She scrolled.
Another entry.
*Recommended intervention: intimidation strategy.*
The room went silent.
Nia’s hands tightened.
The dining hall.
The crutch.
Cole.
It was all planned.
Not because she was weak.
Because she was asking questions.
Marcus looked furious.
“He authorized this.””
Cole shook his head.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
Cole pointed.
“There.””
A signature.
Not Dr. Whitaker’s.
Someone else’s.
Marcus leaned closer.
His expression changed.
“This was approved.””
Nia looked at him.
“By who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He knew.
She could see it.
“Captain.””
Marcus slowly turned the screen.
The signature appeared.
A senior officer.
Someone with authority over medical operations.
Someone Nia had seen before.
But not often.
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You know them?””
Nia whispered:
“They visited me after my surgery.””
Cole looked confused.
“Who?””
Nia stared at the signature.
“General Thomas Avery.””
Silence.
Even Cole knew that name.
A respected officer.
Decorated.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
Marcus stepped back.
“This goes higher than we thought.””
Then the computer screen went black.
A second later, the office speakers activated.
A voice filled the room.
Calm.
Controlled.
Familiar.
“Sergeant Carter.””
Nia froze.
Because she recognized the voice.
Dr. Whitaker.
Marcus immediately looked around.
“Show yourself.””
A quiet laugh came through the speakers.
“You always were impatient, Captain Reed.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“You’re finished.””
“No.””
The voice remained calm.
“You’re finally understanding.””
Nia stepped closer to the speaker.
“Why?””
Silence.
Then:
“Why what?””
“Why me?””
The answer came slowly.
“Because you remembered.””
Nia froze.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Yes, you do.””
The office lights flickered.
Cole looked nervous.
“What did you see?””
Nia ignored him.
Dr. Whitaker continued.
“The accident was supposed to remove a problem.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You mean kill her.””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
The word was quiet.
Almost casual.
Nia felt sick.
Cole looked away.
Marcus clenched his fists.
Dr. Whitaker continued.
“But you survived.””
Nia’s voice shook.
“Why didn’t you finish it?””
Another pause.
“Because someone interfered.””
Everyone went still.
Someone interfered.
Someone saved her.
Marcus looked at the computer.
“Who?””
No answer.
The speakers cut out.
The room became silent.
Then the office door slammed shut.
Locked.
Again.
Cole immediately stepped back.
“Not again.””
Marcus tried the handle.
Nothing.
Nia looked at the screen.
The computer turned back on.
A new file appeared.
No title.
No name.
Only one sentence.
*THE PERSON WHO SAVED YOU IS THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST.*
Nia stared.
Her mind raced through every person who had helped her.
Every person who had stood beside her.
Every person she trusted.
Then the file updated.
A photo appeared.
Nia looked at it.
And her entire body went cold.
Because the person in the picture was standing behind her.
May you like
Watching her.
On the day of the accident.
