Chapter 2: What Robert Knew
Nobody sat down.
For several seconds, the ceremony hall felt frozen.
The senior officer held the sealed document against his chest.
Daniel stood halfway between the stage and his mother, still holding the medal in his hand.
“Sir,” Daniel said carefully, “what is that?””
The officer looked at Robert.
Then at Sarah.
Then back at Daniel.
“Lieutenant, this document was delivered to my office three days ago.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Sir, this isn't the place.””
The officer's expression hardened.
“You're right.””
He looked around the packed ballroom.
“That is why I asked you to handle this privately before today's ceremony.””
Sarah looked at Robert.
“You knew?””
Robert rubbed his jaw.
“I knew there was paperwork.””
“Paperwork?””
Sarah's voice trembled.
“You signed something?””
Robert lowered his voice.
“Sarah, please.””
“No.””
She stood fully now.
Her clutch slipped slightly from her fingers, but she caught it.
“No more please. No more telling me to sit somewhere else. No more telling me I don't understand.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Sarah, you're making this about yourself.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“Vanessa.””
She stopped.
Daniel's voice was quiet.
“Don't.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I was trying to protect the ceremony.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You moved my mother's chair.””
“She shouldn't have been in that section.””
“Why?””
Vanessa glanced at Robert.
That glance told Daniel everything.
He looked at his father.
“Dad.””
Robert's eyes remained fixed on the floor.
Daniel took one step toward him.
“Why?””
Robert finally looked up.
“Because there are things you don't know.””
Sarah laughed once.
It wasn't a happy sound.
“Apparently there are things I don't know either.””
The officer walked down from the podium.
His shoes struck the wooden floor with measured steps.
He stopped in front of Sarah.
“Ma'am, I want you to understand that I didn't create this document.””
Sarah stared at the envelope.
“What does it say?””
The officer hesitated.
“I can't disclose everything until it's opened.””
Daniel looked at the seal.
“Then open it.””
Robert immediately said, “Daniel, don't do this.””
Daniel turned.
“Don't do what?””
“You're angry.””
“Yes.””
“You don't understand the consequences.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“What consequences?””
Robert's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa stepped beside him.
“Robert is trying to save you from something.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Save me?””
“Yes.””
“From my mother?””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“From the truth.””
Sarah's eyes filled again.
“What truth?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel walked back toward his mother.
He crouched slightly so they were at eye level.
“Mom.””
Sarah wiped beneath one eye.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“I should have told you.””
Daniel frowned.
“Told me what?””
Sarah shook her head.
“I don't know.””
The officer watched them silently.
Daniel stood.
“Sir, open it.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Lieutenant, I am your father.””
Daniel stared at him.
“And she's my mother.””
He pointed toward Sarah.
“You've both had a say in my life.””
His voice cracked.
“So I want to know why one of you is standing in the front row while the other is sitting against a wall.””
Robert's face reddened.
“That isn't fair.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No, Dad. What isn't fair is watching my mother get humiliated while you sit there.””
The room remained silent.
Several families looked away.
Others couldn't.
A phone camera appeared between two rows of chairs.
Vanessa noticed.
“Put that away,” she snapped.
The woman holding it lowered the phone.
Daniel didn't even look at her.
His attention remained on Robert.
“You knew she would be back there.””
Robert swallowed.
“I didn't know Vanessa would—”
Vanessa spun toward him.
“Robert.””
He stopped.
Daniel's eyes widened.
“You didn't know Vanessa would what?””
Robert looked at his wife.
For the first time, fear appeared on his face.
Vanessa whispered, “Don't.””
Daniel took a slow breath.
“Dad, what did she do?””
Robert said nothing.
Sarah looked between them.
Then she noticed something.
A small black folder sticking out from beneath Robert's jacket.
She pointed.
“What is that?””
Robert instinctively covered it.
Daniel saw the movement.
“Dad.””
Robert stepped backward.
Daniel's voice became colder.
“Give me the folder.””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Sarah's face changed.
Robert seemed to realize what he'd just admitted.
Daniel stared at him.
“You said you wanted to protect me.””
Robert nodded.
“Then why are you hiding documents from me?””
The senior officer stepped closer.
“Because that folder contains the reason this ceremony was almost canceled.””
Sarah stopped breathing.
Daniel looked at the officer.
“Almost canceled?””
The officer nodded.
“Until this morning, your award was under review.””
Daniel's face went blank.
“Why?””
The officer looked at Robert.
“Because someone filed a formal complaint alleging that your commissioning record contained a false parental authorization.””
Sarah's eyes widened.
“What?””
Daniel slowly turned toward his father.
“You filed something?””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
The officer corrected him.
“Your father didn't file it.””
Robert's expression collapsed.
The officer looked at Sarah.
“Your name was used.””
Sarah whispered, “My name?””
The officer lifted the sealed envelope.
“That's why you need to see what's inside.””
He broke the seal.
Daniel reached for his mother's hand.
Robert closed his eyes.
And Vanessa quietly stepped toward the exit.
Daniel noticed.
“Vanessa.””
She stopped.
“Where are you going?””
She didn't turn around.
“I need air.””
Daniel stared at her.
Then the officer pulled the first page from the envelope.
His eyes moved across the signature at the bottom.
He looked up.
“Sarah, you need to see this signature.””
Sarah stepped closer.
She looked at the page.
And her face went completely white.
May you like
Because the signature underneath Daniel's name—
was hers.
