Chapter 4: The Name on the Form
“That’s impossible.””
Sarah's voice barely carried across the ballroom.
Daniel stared at the document.
The name at the bottom was unmistakable.
*Michael Carter.*
His grandfather.
Dead for six years.
Daniel looked at the senior officer.
“My grandfather?””
The officer nodded.
“Michael Carter.””
“He died when I was eighteen.””
“I know.””
“Then how did he sign a military authorization when I was sixteen?””
The officer's jaw tightened.
“That is exactly what the investigation was supposed to determine.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Sir, this document should never have been shown here.””
Daniel turned.
“Why?””
Robert lowered his voice.
“Because it was sealed.””
“Then why was it brought to my ceremony?””
The officer answered.
“Because your award file triggered a review.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What does my award have to do with an eight-year-old document?””
The officer held up the papers.
“Your original commissioning packet lists your mother as your sole emergency contact and financial beneficiary.””
Sarah nodded slowly.
“That’s what I remember.””
“But this document,” the officer continued, “changes those instructions.””
“To my father,” Daniel said.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at Robert.
“And my grandfather supposedly approved it.””
Robert rubbed his forehead.
“I told you. It was supposed to be temporary.””
Sarah turned toward him.
“You keep saying that.””
Robert swallowed.
“What do you want me to say?””
“The truth.””
“I've told you the truth.””
“No,” Sarah said.
“You've told us pieces of it.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped away from the exit.
“Robert.””
He looked at her.
She shook her head.
“You can't keep doing this.””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“Not now.””
“When, then?””
Daniel watched them.
“What are you two talking about?””
Vanessa's hands trembled.
Robert walked toward her.
“Go outside.””
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
She looked at Daniel.
“I didn't know what it meant when I signed it.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Signed what?””
Robert closed his eyes.
Vanessa pointed at the document.
“That.””
Sarah stared at her.
“You signed this?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Not as Sarah.””
“Then as who?””
Vanessa looked down.
“As a witness.””
The officer immediately stepped forward.
“A witness signature does appear on the original filing.””
Daniel held up the page.
“Is this hers?””
The officer examined it.
“Yes.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
Sarah took a step backward.
“So you were there.””
“I didn't understand what Robert was doing.””
“You watched him use my name.””
“I didn't know it was your name.””
“Then whose name did you think it was?””
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Daniel looked between them.
“My father told you to witness a document.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he said it was about your academy application.””
Daniel frowned.
“What did he tell you?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“He said your mother was unstable.””
Sarah's face went blank.
Robert immediately said, “That's not what I said.””
“You said she was going to interfere with your future,” Vanessa replied.
“I said she was afraid.””
“You said she was dangerous.””
Sarah's hand went to her mouth.
Daniel stared at Robert.
“You told people my mother was dangerous?””
Robert's voice broke.
“I was trying to keep control.””
“Of what?””
Robert looked at him.
“Of your life.””
Daniel laughed once, without humor.
“You forged my mother's signature to control my life?””
“I didn't forge it.””
“Then who did?””
Silence.
The officer looked toward the ballroom doors.
A military investigator entered quietly.
He approached the senior officer and whispered something.
The officer's expression changed.
“Where?””
“Outside.””
The investigator handed him a second envelope.
The officer opened it.
Daniel watched his eyes move across the page.
“What?””
The officer looked at him.
“We found the original digital record.””
Robert's face drained.
Sarah stepped forward.
“Who created it?””
The officer looked at Robert.
“Your husband.””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
The investigator held up a tablet.
“There is a timestamp, account identifier, and access record.””
Daniel stared at his father.
“Dad.””
Robert backed away.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You keep saying that.””
“I had no choice.””
“You always have a choice.””
Robert's voice cracked.
“You don't understand what your mother was planning.””
Sarah stiffened.
“What was I planning?””
Robert looked at her.
“You were going to take Daniel and leave.””
Sarah frowned.
“I was leaving you.””
“You were going to take my son.””
“He was my son too.””
Robert shook his head.
“You wanted to move him across the country.””
“I wanted to get away from you.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Why didn't you just let her?””
Robert's eyes filled.
“Because I knew what would happen.””
“What?””
“You would never become the man you are now.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You're saying you ruined my family for my career?””
Robert looked away.
“I made sacrifices.””
Sarah whispered, “You made them for yourself.””
The officer folded the documents.
“There is still one unanswered question.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The signature.””
He held up the page.
“We know Robert accessed the system.””
“We know Vanessa witnessed the filing.””
“And we know Michael Carter's name appears on it.””
Daniel's voice was quiet.
“But Grandpa was dead?””
“Yes.””
“So someone forged three identities?””
The officer nodded.
“Possibly.””
Sarah shook her head.
“Then why would someone go to all that trouble?””
The officer looked at her.
“Because the filing didn't just change Daniel's beneficiary.””
He turned the page.
“It also transferred ownership of a military-related trust.””
Daniel frowned.
“What trust?””
Robert's face went white.
Sarah noticed.
“Robert?””
He didn't answer.
Daniel stepped toward him.
“What trust?””
Robert whispered:
“The one your grandfather left you.””
Daniel froze.
“My grandfather left me money?””
“No.””
Robert's eyes lifted.
“Something more valuable.””
Before Daniel could respond, the ballroom doors opened again.
A young military attorney rushed inside.
“Sir.””
The senior officer turned.
“What happened?””
The attorney held out a phone.
“We just received confirmation from the bank.””
“Confirmation of what?””
The attorney looked at Daniel.
“The trust was never transferred.””
Daniel exhaled.
Then the attorney added:
“Because the real beneficiary refused to sign.””
Sarah's eyes widened.
“Who?””
The attorney looked down at the phone.
May you like
Then back at her.
“Your name.””
