Chapter 5: What She Never Knew
Sarah couldn't speak.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom?””
She shook her head.
“I don't understand.””
The military attorney stepped closer.
“The trust was established by your father-in-law, Michael Carter.””
Sarah stared at him.
“My father-in-law hated me.””
Robert flinched.
“He didn't hate you.””
Sarah turned.
“You told me he did.””
“I was angry.””
“You said he blamed me for everything.””
Robert looked down.
The attorney continued.
“Mr. Carter established the trust shortly before his death.””
Daniel asked, “For me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why was my mother listed as beneficiary?””
The attorney hesitated.
“She wasn't exactly the beneficiary.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She was the trustee.””
Sarah's eyes widened.
“I was?””
The attorney nodded.
“The trust required Sarah Carter to manage the assets until Daniel reached a specific age.””
“What age?””
“Twenty-five.””
Daniel stared at him.
“I'm twenty-four.””
“Yes.””
The room seemed to go silent again.
Sarah looked at Robert.
“You knew.””
Robert's eyes filled.
“Yes.””
“You knew all these years?””
“Yes.””
“And you told me my father-in-law wanted nothing to do with us.””
“I didn't know about the trust at first.””
“But you knew later.””
Robert said nothing.
Sarah's voice hardened.
“When?””
“After Michael died.””
“You found the documents?””
“I found some.””
“And the trust?””
“Yes.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
Daniel stepped toward his father.
“What did you do?””
Robert's breathing became uneven.
“I tried to access it.””
“You tried to steal it?””
“No.””
The attorney interrupted.
“The trust couldn't be accessed without the trustee's authorization.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Me.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stared at his father.
“So Dad created a fake document.””
Robert shook his head.
“I thought the bank would accept it.””
“But they didn't.””
“No.””
“Because Grandpa knew you might try.””
Robert's eyes lifted.
“Your grandfather knew I was struggling.””
Sarah looked shocked.
“Struggling with what?””
Robert said nothing.
Daniel pressed him.
“With what?””
Robert's shoulders dropped.
“Debt.””
Sarah's mouth fell open.
“How much?””
Robert whispered a number.
Sarah stared at him.
“You were in debt for hundreds of thousands of dollars?””
Robert nodded.
“And you never told me.””
“I was going to fix it.””
“With my son's money?””
“It wasn't his money yet.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“It was.””
Robert shook his head.
“I thought if I could stabilize everything—”
“You forged my signature.””
“I didn't.””
“You had someone do it.””
“I didn't.””
“Then explain it!””
Robert slammed his palm against the back of a chair.
“I didn't forge anything!””
The room went silent.
Vanessa began crying.
Daniel stared at his father.
Robert looked around helplessly.
“I found the trust. I found the restrictions. I knew Sarah had control until Daniel turned twenty-five.””
Sarah whispered, “And I'm the one who refused.””
Robert nodded.
“You wouldn't approve a withdrawal.””
“Because I didn't know about it.””
“You would have refused anyway.””
“Yes.””
Robert's eyes reddened.
“So I asked Michael.””
Sarah frowned.
“He was dead.””
“I know.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Then who did you ask?””
Robert looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don't.””
Daniel turned.
“What does she know?””
Robert said nothing.
Vanessa backed against the wall.
“Robert.””
“You said you would keep quiet.””
“I've kept quiet for eight years.””
Sarah's eyes widened.
“Eight years?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What happened eight years ago?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Robert whispered, “Don't tell them.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa looked at Sarah.
Then Daniel.
Then finally Robert.
“The night your mother left…”
Sarah held her breath.
“…I was there.””
Sarah's face went pale.
“What?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I saw everything.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“You told me Mom just left.””
“She didn't just leave,” Vanessa said.
Robert snapped, “Enough!””
Vanessa flinched.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Let her talk.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Your mother didn't leave because she wanted to abandon you.””
Sarah whispered, “Then why?””
Vanessa looked at Robert.
“Because he made her believe Daniel would be taken away.””
Robert's jaw tightened.
“You don't know what you're talking about.””
“I was there.””
“You were drunk.””
“I remember.””
“You remember what you wanted to remember.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
She reached into her purse.
Her hand came out holding a small silver flash drive.
Daniel stared at it.
“What is that?””
Vanessa's fingers trembled.
“Something I kept.””
Robert's face changed.
“Vanessa.””
“I couldn't destroy it.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“What is it?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Your father recorded the conversation.””
Robert's face turned gray.
Daniel stared.
“What conversation?””
“The one between your mother and your father the night she left.””
Sarah's breath caught.
“I never knew.””
Vanessa held out the drive.
“I thought if I kept it, someday the truth would matter.””
Daniel reached for it.
Robert suddenly grabbed his wrist.
“Don't.””
Daniel looked down at his father's hand.
Then slowly back at him.
“Why?””
Robert's voice was barely audible.
“Because once you hear it…”
He released Daniel.
“…you won't be able to forgive me.””
The senior officer looked at the military attorney.
“Can that drive be authenticated?””
“Yes.””
Daniel took it.
He stared at the tiny piece of metal in his palm.
Sarah stepped beside him.
“I don't want you to hear it alone.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I don't want you to hear it either.””
“I've already lost eight years.””
She reached for his hand.
“I don't want to lose another minute.””
The attorney took the drive.
“I can have this reviewed.””
Robert suddenly whispered:
“You need to know one thing.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Robert's eyes filled with tears.
“Your mother wasn't the only person who left that night.””
Sarah frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Robert looked toward the ballroom doors.
“Someone else disappeared.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“Who?””
Robert opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, the military attorney's phone rang.
He listened.
Then his expression changed.
He slowly lowered the phone.
“Sir…”
The senior officer looked at him.
“What?””
The attorney swallowed.
“The audio file has a second voice.””
Sarah's face went cold.
“Whose?””
May you like
The attorney looked directly at Daniel.
“It sounds like your grandfather.””
