Chapter 7: The Second Envelope

The old woman stopped three feet from Daniel.

Up close, Daniel could see the years etched into her face.

But her eyes were sharp.

Unwavering.

She held the yellowed envelope with both hands.

“Your name is Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Evelyn Carter.””

Daniel swallowed.

“My grandfather's sister?””

She nodded.

“Your grandfather was my little brother.””

Sarah stared at her.

“Michael never told me he had a sister.””

Evelyn gave a sad smile.

“Michael told people only what he thought they needed to know.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Evelyn, you shouldn't be here.””

Her eyes moved to him.

“I've been waiting eight years to be here.””

Robert stopped.

Daniel looked between them.

“You know my father?””

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“I know what your father did.””

Robert's jaw tightened.

“You don't know everything.””

“No,” Evelyn said.

“But I know enough.””

She held out the envelope.

Daniel reached for it.

Evelyn didn't release it.

“Before you open it, promise me something.””

“What?””

“Whatever you read, don't punish your mother for what she was forced to do.””

Sarah's eyes filled.

Daniel nodded.

“I promise.””

Evelyn finally released the envelope.

The paper felt brittle beneath Daniel's fingers.

His name was written in black ink.

His grandfather's handwriting.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

He carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

He unfolded it.

The first line made his breath stop.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, your father failed to tell you the truth.*

Robert closed his eyes.

Daniel continued.

*Your mother did not abandon you. She was removed from your life because someone wanted control of the Carter family trust.*

Sarah covered her mouth.

Daniel looked up.

“Trust.””

Evelyn nodded.

He did.

*When you were sixteen, your father was drowning in debt. He believed the trust would solve everything. It couldn't be accessed without Sarah's authorization.*

Daniel's eyes lifted toward Robert.

Robert whispered, “Michael was wrong.””

Daniel continued.

*Your father came to me asking for help. I refused. Then he came to Sarah.*

Sarah's shoulders shook.

Daniel read the next paragraph.

*I witnessed the argument. I heard him threaten her with your future. I told Sarah I would protect Daniel if she left the house temporarily.*

Sarah suddenly looked at Evelyn.

“He told you?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Michael called me that night.””

Sarah whispered, “Why didn't he come?””

“He tried.””

Robert stepped forward.

“That's not true.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You locked the front door.””

Daniel's head snapped toward his father.

“You locked her in?””

Robert shook his head.

“Not like that.””

Sarah stared at him.

“What does not like that mean?””

Robert's voice cracked.

“I was desperate.””

Evelyn continued.

“Michael threatened to call the police.””

Robert looked away.

“And that's when Robert agreed to let Sarah leave.””

Sarah whispered, “He made me think I had no choice.””

“I know.””

Daniel read the letter again.

Then his eyes caught the next line.

*But there was something Sarah never knew.*

He stopped.

Sarah looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel's voice trembled.

“There's more.””

He continued.

*The trust was not created simply to give Daniel money.*

Daniel frowned.

“What else was it for?””

Evelyn's face became solemn.

*Michael knew Robert would eventually discover the full terms. So he created a second protection.*

Daniel looked up.

“Protection from what?””

Evelyn answered softly.

“Your father.””

Robert shook his head.

“You're twisting this.””

Daniel ignored him.

He read the next paragraph.

*If Robert ever attempts to control Daniel's military career, Sarah must be given complete authority over the trust and Daniel's legal affairs.*

Sarah stared at the letter.

“Legal affairs?””

Daniel looked at the officer.

“What does that mean?””

The officer stepped closer.

“It means your grandfather anticipated interference.””

Daniel looked back at the letter.

The next line was underlined.

*Most importantly, the trust contains evidence concerning Daniel's birth records.*

Daniel froze.

Sarah stopped breathing.

Robert whispered:

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What birth records?””

Robert shook his head.

“Don't read that.””

Daniel's grip tightened around the paper.

“Why?””

“Because Michael was wrong.””

“About what?””

Robert stepped toward him.

“About you.””

Daniel stared.

The entire room seemed to disappear.

Sarah whispered:

“What did Michael know?””

Robert didn't answer.

Daniel looked down.

The final paragraph waited beneath his grandfather's signature.

*Daniel, there is one truth your father has hidden from both of you. Sarah is your mother. But Robert Carter is not your biological father.*

Daniel's fingers went numb.

Sarah made a small sound.

“No.””

Robert closed his eyes.

Evelyn lowered her head.

Daniel looked at Sarah.

“Mom?””

She couldn't speak.

He looked at Robert.

“Dad?””

Robert's lips trembled.

Daniel took one step backward.

“Is this true?””

Robert finally looked at him.

And said:

“I never knew until the night Michael died.””

Daniel's heart pounded.

“Who is my father?””

Robert didn't answer.

Evelyn did.

“Michael knew.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Knew what?””

Evelyn's voice broke.

“He knew who your biological father was.””

Daniel stared at the letter.

Then he noticed something beneath the final line.

A handwritten note.

Not from Michael.

Different ink.

Different handwriting.

Four words.

*Ask Robert about Fort Riley.*

Daniel slowly looked up.

“Fort Riley?””

Robert went completely still.

The senior officer's expression changed.

“Fort Riley?””

May you like

Robert whispered:

“That's where it started.””
