Chapter 6: The Voice in the Recording

The room seemed to lose all its air.

Daniel stared at the attorney.

“My grandfather was dead.””

“I know.””

“You just said the recording is from the night my mother left.””

“Yes.””

“That was eight years ago.””

The attorney nodded.

“Your grandfather died six years ago.””

Nobody spoke.

Sarah slowly sat down.

Robert remained standing, staring at the floor.

Vanessa wiped her face.

Daniel looked at the flash drive.

“Play it.””

The attorney hesitated.

“Lieutenant, we should move this somewhere private.””

“No.””

Daniel's voice was firm.

“Play it.””

The senior officer nodded.

A military aide brought over a laptop.

The attorney connected the drive.

For a moment, there was only static.

Then a man's voice emerged.

Older.

Low.

Controlled.

Sarah's hand flew to her mouth.

She knew that voice.

“Michael.””

Robert closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

*Michael:* “Robert, you don't have to do this.””

A younger Robert's voice answered.

*Robert:* “You don't understand.””

*Michael:* “I understand exactly.””

Sarah began shaking.

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom?””

She couldn't answer.

The recording continued.

*Robert:* “She'll take him.””

*Michael:* “He's sixteen. He's not property.””

*Robert:* “He's my son.””

*Michael:* “He's hers too.””

A chair scraped across the floor in the recording.

Then Sarah heard her own younger voice.

*Sarah:* “Robert, please.””

She closed her eyes.

The memory returned.

The kitchen.

The rain against the windows.

Daniel's school bag by the door.

Robert standing between her and the hallway.

She had buried that night so deeply that she had convinced herself she remembered almost nothing.

But now every sound came back.

*Robert:* “If you walk out that door, Daniel's future is over.””

*Sarah:* “You're threatening me.””

*Robert:* “I'm warning you.””

*Sarah:* “You're lying.””

*Robert:* “Call the academy. Call anyone you want. They'll believe me.””

Sarah gasped.

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

He whispered, “He really did it.””

Robert covered his face.

The recording continued.

Then Michael's voice came again.

*Michael:* “Robert, give me the papers.””

Silence.

*Robert:* “No.””

*Michael:* “You forged her signature.””

Sarah opened her eyes.

Daniel turned toward Robert.

Robert couldn't look at him.

On the recording, Michael continued.

*Michael:* “If you use that document, I will report you.””

*Robert:* “You wouldn't.””

*Michael:* “Try me.””

A long pause.

Then Robert spoke.

*Robert:* “You think you can take him from me?””

*Michael:* “No. I think you can lose him yourself.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stood with both hands on the table.

His breathing was slow.

Too slow.

Sarah looked at Robert.

“You threatened my son.””

Robert shook his head.

“I was scared.””

“You threatened me.””

“I was scared.””

“You lied to him.””

“I was trying to keep my family together.””

Sarah's voice cracked.

“You destroyed it.””

Daniel turned away.

For a moment, he stared at the American flags on the stage.

Then he spoke.

“Grandpa knew.””

The officer nodded.

“Yes.””

“He knew about the trust.””

“Yes.””

“He knew Dad forged the document.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at the attorney.

“Then why didn't he expose him?””

The attorney glanced at the remaining paperwork.

“That is what we need to determine.””

Sarah suddenly remembered something.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She reached into her clutch.

Her fingers searched beneath a lipstick, compact mirror, and folded tissues.

Then she pulled out a tiny photograph.

Daniel recognized it.

“Grandpa.””

Sarah turned it over.

There was handwriting on the back.

Daniel leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

Sarah read aloud.

“If Robert ever tells you I abandoned you, don't believe him.””

Daniel's face went blank.

Robert stared at the photograph.

“I've never seen that.””

Sarah looked at him.

“It was given to me by Michael.””

“When?””

“The day before he died.””

Robert stepped backward.

“That doesn't make sense.””

Sarah's eyes narrowed.

“He told me he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“He wouldn't say.””

Daniel took the photograph.

There was another line underneath.

*Ask him what happened to the second envelope.*

Daniel looked up.

“Second envelope?””

Robert's face drained.

The senior officer immediately asked, “What envelope?””

Robert shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Sarah stared at him.

“You do.””

“No.””

“You just reacted.””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Vanessa suddenly whispered, “Robert.””

He turned.

She was crying again.

“I thought you destroyed it.””

Robert's eyes closed.

Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“What envelope?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“The one Michael gave Robert.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“When?””

“The night before he died.””

Daniel's pulse quickened.

“What was inside?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never saw it.””

“But you knew about it.””

“Yes.””

Robert snapped, “Because I told her.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Why?””

Robert said nothing.

The senior officer stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, where is the envelope?””

Robert's hands trembled.

“I don't have it.””

Sarah whispered, “Then who does?””

Robert looked at her.

For the first time, he looked genuinely terrified.

“I thought Michael took it back.””

Daniel frowned.

“He was dead.””

“I know.””

“Then who took it?””

Robert stared toward the back of the ballroom.

Everyone followed his gaze.

There, beside the rear exit, stood an elderly Black woman Daniel had never noticed before.

She wore a simple dark dress.

Her hands were folded over a worn leather handbag.

She had been watching the entire ceremony.

Sarah stared at her.

“Who is that?””

Robert whispered the answer.

“Michael's sister.””

The woman slowly opened her handbag.

And pulled out a yellowed envelope.

Daniel's breath caught.

She looked directly at him.

Then at Sarah.

And said:

“Your grandfather told me never to give this to either of you until Daniel received his first military honor.””

She walked forward.

The entire room watched.

Daniel stared at the envelope.

His name was written across it.

May you like

But beneath his name was another line.

*To be opened only after Sarah learns why she was really sent away.*
