Chapter 9: The Last Lie

“Where is Robert?””

Daniel's voice echoed down the corridor.

Nobody answered.

The ballroom doors stood open behind them.

People were beginning to whisper.

Sarah ran toward the parking lot.

Daniel followed.

“Mom!””

She stopped beneath the covered entrance.

Rain hammered the pavement beyond the steps.

Sarah turned around.

“I know where he went.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Where?””

“Home.””

“How do you know?””

“Because whenever Robert was afraid, he went to the garage.””

Daniel frowned.

“The garage?””

Sarah nodded.

“He kept things there.””

“What things?””

“Things he didn't want me to find.””

They drove in silence.

Twenty minutes later, Daniel's car stopped outside the house where he had grown up.

The garage door was half-open.

Sarah froze.

“He's here.””

Daniel got out.

“Stay behind me.””

She shook her head.

“I'm not hiding anymore.””

They entered.

The garage smelled of oil, cardboard, and old wood.

Daniel's childhood bicycle hung from the wall.

A faded baseball glove sat on a shelf.

Then Sarah noticed the metal cabinet in the corner.

She pointed.

“That.””

Daniel walked over.

The cabinet was unlocked.

Inside were folders.

Military records.

Bank statements.

Photographs.

Daniel pulled out a file.

The first page showed his name.

*DANIEL CARTER.*

Beneath it was another name.

*MARCUS REED.*

Sarah covered her mouth.

Daniel flipped through the pages.

Birth records.

Military correspondence.

A photograph of a younger Black man in uniform.

Daniel stared at his face.

There was something familiar about him.

The eyes.

The jaw.

The slight crease between the eyebrows.

Sarah whispered:

“He looks like you.””

Daniel couldn't speak.

Then a voice came from behind them.

“I told you not to come here.””

Robert stood in the doorway.

His suit jacket was gone.

His shirt sleeves were rolled up.

He looked exhausted.

Daniel held up the photograph.

“Is this him?””

Robert stared at it.

“Yes.””

“Is Marcus Reed my father?””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Sarah gasped.

Daniel felt the words hit harder than any medal ever had.

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

“You knew enough to hide it.””

Robert stepped inside.

“I didn't know until Michael showed me the test.””

Daniel froze.

“What test?””

Robert nodded toward the file.

“DNA.””

Daniel opened another folder.

There it was.

A laboratory report.

The probability was overwhelming.

*99.98%.*

Sarah's hand shook.

“You had this?””

Robert nodded.

“For eight years.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it's true.””

Daniel slammed the file onto the workbench.

“You let me hate my mother.””

“I never told you to hate her.””

“You told me she abandoned me.””

“I thought you were better off believing that.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“You took eight years from both of us.””

Robert looked at her.

“I know.””

“No,” she said.

“You don't.””

She pointed toward Daniel.

“You took his mother.””

Then she pointed at herself.

“You took my son.””

Robert's eyes filled.

“I loved him.””

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“Love doesn't look like this.””

Robert nodded.

“I know.””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel noticed another folder.

It was marked:

*FORT RILEY — REED*

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Marcus Reed stood beside Michael Carter.

But someone else stood behind them.

A much younger Robert.

Daniel looked at the date.

Eight years earlier.

The same year his mother left.

He turned the photograph over.

A handwritten note read:

*Marcus knows the truth. Robert knows Marcus knows.*

Daniel looked at his father.

“You met him.””

Robert's face went pale.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night before Sarah left.””

Sarah stared at him.

“You met Marcus?””

Robert nodded.

“Michael brought him to me.””

“Why?””

“To settle everything.””

Daniel's voice tightened.

“What happened?””

Robert looked toward the floor.

“I told Marcus to stay away from you.””

Sarah whispered, “And he agreed?””

“He didn't have a choice.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

Robert didn't answer.

Daniel grabbed the edge of the workbench.

“What did you do?””

Robert finally looked at him.

“I threatened him.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“With what?””

“His military career.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You threatened my biological father too.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Robert's voice broke.

“Because I was your father.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Robert flinched.

“You were the man who raised me.””

“Yes.””

“But you wanted to own me.””

Robert's eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Silence.

Then Daniel heard something outside.

A car door slammed.

Everyone turned.

A man's voice came from the driveway.

“Robert?””

Sarah froze.

Daniel's heart began pounding.

Robert whispered:

“No.””

The voice came again.

“Robert Carter, you have five minutes.””

Daniel stepped toward the garage entrance.

“Who is that?””

Robert grabbed his arm.

“Don't.””

Daniel pulled free.

“Who is that?””

Robert's face had gone white.

“Marcus.””

Sarah stopped breathing.

The garage door slowly began to rise.

Rainlight spilled across the floor.

A tall Black man stood outside.

Older now.

Gray threaded through his beard.

But Daniel recognized the eyes immediately.

His own eyes.

Marcus Reed looked past Robert.

Straight at Sarah.

Then at Daniel.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Finally Marcus said:

“I'm sorry it took me this long.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Why did you come now?””

Marcus looked at Robert.

“Because Michael told me that if Robert ever exposed the trust, I had to come back.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“My grandfather planned all of this?””

Marcus nodded.

“He knew the truth would eventually surface.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Why didn't you come for Daniel?””

Marcus's face broke.

“Because I was told you didn't want me.””

Sarah stared at Robert.

Robert looked away.

Marcus continued.

“I received one letter eight years ago.””

“What did it say?”” Daniel asked.

Marcus reached into his coat.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“It said Sarah had chosen Robert.””

Sarah shook her head.

“I never wrote that.””

Marcus looked at Robert.

“I know.””

Daniel's chest tightened.

“Then who did?””

Marcus unfolded the paper.

At the bottom was a signature.

Sarah's.

But beneath it was a sentence written in different ink.

*If you ever contact Daniel, he will die.*

Sarah's face went white.

Daniel stared at the threat.

Robert whispered:

“That wasn't me.””

Everyone turned toward him.

He looked terrified.

“I swear.””

Marcus slowly shook his head.

“I believe you.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then who?””

Marcus looked at the file on the workbench.

Then at the photograph of Michael.

“Your grandfather knew.””

Daniel's heart stopped.

“Knew what?””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“He wasn't protecting you from Robert.””

He looked directly at Sarah.

“He was protecting you from someone else in your family.””

The garage went silent.

Sarah whispered:

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the house.

May you like

Then he said:

“Vanessa.””
