Chapter 10: The Daughter Everyone Lost
The message remained glowing on Adrian’s phone.
Nobody knew who sent it.
But everyone understood what it meant.
Finish what you started.
Maya stared at the screen from across the ballroom.
Her heart pounded.
“Who sent that?””
Adrian quickly locked his phone.
Nobody missed the panic on his face.
Darius stepped forward.
“Give me the phone.””
Adrian laughed.
“You think you can order me around?””
Darius didn’t move.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I think you’re scared.””
That landed.
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
For years, he had controlled rooms with confidence.
With money.
With secrets.
But now everyone was looking at him differently.
Not as the powerful Carter family member.
As someone who knew too much.
Maya looked at Lena.
“Tell me the truth.””
Lena swallowed.
“I will.””
“Everything.””
Lena nodded.
“Everything.””
The ballroom slowly emptied.
Guests whispered as security guided them away.
The wedding celebration was over.
The perfect night Evelyn had built was gone.
Only the people connected to the secret remained.
Maya stood near the large windows overlooking the mansion gardens.
She felt like she was watching someone else’s life collapse.
“My whole life…”
Her voice trembled.
“Everything I believed about my family was wrong.””
Lena stepped closer.
“I wanted to protect you.””
Maya turned.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But nobody protected me from the lies.””
Lena looked down.
Because she knew Maya was right.
Darius stayed beside Maya.
Not speaking.
Just being there.
Lena took a deep breath.
“When I was pregnant with you, I found out something about our family.””
“What?””
“My father had been hiding money. Illegal deals. Secrets.””
Maya frowned.
“Grandfather?””
Lena nodded.
“He built the Carter name on things nobody wanted exposed.””
Adrian interrupted.
“That’s not true.””
Everyone looked at him.
Lena’s expression hardened.
“You know it is.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You destroyed this family because you couldn’t accept reality.””
“No.””
Lena looked at him.
“You destroyed this family because you wanted what was never yours.””
The tension sharpened.
Darius noticed.
“What was never his?””
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“Control.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stood slowly.
Her eyes were red from crying.
“Adrian always believed he deserved everything.””
Adrian laughed.
“And you didn’t?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I wanted to protect Maya.””
“You wanted to replace Lena.””
The accusation silenced her.
Maya looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
The truth clearly hurt.
“When Lena disappeared, I thought she was dead.””
Maya looked at her.
“But she wasn’t.””
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I found out years later.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because by then…”
Her voice broke.
“By then you were my daughter too.””
Maya froze.
Evelyn continued.
“I knew I couldn’t take Lena’s place. I never tried to.””
Maya looked away.
“Didn’t you?””
The question hurt.
Evelyn didn’t defend herself.
Maybe because she couldn’t.
Marcus stepped forward.
“She loved you.””
Maya looked at him.
“She lied to me.””
“Yes.””
Marcus nodded.
“She did.””
The honesty surprised her.
“But sometimes people make terrible choices when they’re afraid.””
Maya looked at him.
“And what about you?””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I made worse ones.””
Darius noticed.
“What did you do?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small key.
“I helped hide the truth.””
Lena looked at him.
“Marcus.””
“I’m done hiding.””
He placed the key on the table.
“This opens a safety deposit box.””
Darius looked at it.
“What’s inside?””
Marcus looked at Maya.
“The original evidence your mother tried to protect.””
Maya stared.
“Then why wasn’t it in the dress?””
“Because your mother knew someone would search the dress.””
Darius picked up the key.
“Where is the box?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“At the Carter family bank.””
Maya looked at Adrian.
“And you know about it.””
Adrian’s silence confirmed it.
Darius turned.
“You tried to find it.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
Maya laughed softly.
“Everyone says that.””
Then she stepped closer.
“But every time someone says it, another secret appears.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You have no idea what’s waiting in that box.””
Maya held his gaze.
“Then I guess I’m finally going to find out.””
A sudden sound interrupted them.
The mansion alarm.
Everyone looked around.
Darius immediately reached for Maya.
“What happened?””
A security alert appeared on the wall screen.
One message.
*Unauthorized access detected.*
Then another line appeared.
*Family vault opened.*
Marcus went pale.
“No.””
Lena looked terrified.
“They found it.””
Darius looked at the key in his hand.
“But we haven’t left.””
Marcus whispered:
May you like
“Someone else has a key.””
And then every light in the mansion shut off.
