Chapter 9: The Mother Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The woman standing at the ballroom entrance looked at Maya like she had been waiting years for this moment.

Maya couldn’t breathe.

Her entire life had been built around one truth.

Her mother was gone.

Her mother had died.

Her mother was a memory.

But now that memory was standing in front of her.

Alive.

Darius reached for Maya’s hand.

She didn’t notice.

She couldn’t.

Her eyes stayed locked on the woman.

“Mom?””

The word came out barely louder than a whisper.

The woman’s face broke.

“Yes.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“No, that’s not possible.””

The woman stepped forward.

“I know.””

Maya backed away.

“You’re dead.””

The woman closed her eyes.

“I know what they told you.””

Darius looked around.

At Evelyn.

At Adrian.

At Marcus.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except Maya.

“Someone explain,” he said.

His voice carried across the ballroom.

“Nobody leaves this room until someone explains.””

The woman looked at Evelyn.

A painful silence passed between them.

Then Lena whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Evelyn started crying.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just quietly.

Like she had been carrying the weight of this moment for years.

Maya saw it.

And it hurt.

Because Evelyn wasn’t surprised.

She was relieved.

“You knew.””

Maya looked at Evelyn.

“You knew she was alive.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer destroyed whatever hope remained.

Maya stepped back.

“How long?””

Evelyn couldn’t speak.

“How long did you know my mother was alive?””

“Twenty years.””

The room reacted.

A gasp moved through the guests.

Maya stared.

Twenty years.

Her entire adult life.

Her childhood.

Her birthdays.

Her questions.

All answered by a lie.

She turned toward Lena.

“Why?””

Lena’s tears fell.

“Because I had to disappear.””

“Why?””

“Because someone wanted me gone.””

Maya looked around.

At Adrian.

At Evelyn.

At Marcus.

“At who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian laughed.

A quiet laugh.

“You still don’t understand.””

Darius turned toward him.

“You should stop talking.””

Adrian ignored him.

“Maya, your mother wasn’t hiding from me.””

He pointed at Lena.

“She was hiding because she stole something.””

Maya looked confused.

“What?””

Lena’s expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Adrian.””

He smiled.

“Tell her.””

Darius stepped forward.

“Tell her what?””

Adrian looked at the torn coral dress.

“The truth about what was sewn inside that gown.””

Maya looked down.

The missing evidence.

The hidden seam.

The thing someone had taken.

Lena slowly walked toward her.

“I put something inside that dress.””

Maya stared.

“What?””

“Something I needed you to have.””

Darius frowned.

“But someone removed it.””

Lena nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked around the room.

“Which means they know what was inside.””

Evelyn suddenly looked toward the staircase.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

Darius noticed.

“What did you see?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

She walked quickly toward the table where the receipt had been placed.

Something was missing.

The receipt.

Darius followed.

“It was here.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.””

Maya looked confused.

“Why does that matter?””

Marcus’s face became serious.

“Because the receipt wasn’t just proof that Evelyn bought the dress.””

He looked at Lena.

“It was a message.””

Lena nodded.

“Yes.””

Darius looked at her.

“A message from who?””

Lena stared at the crowd.

At the guests.

At the family members.

At everyone who had gathered to celebrate Maya’s wedding.

Then she whispered:

“The person who ordered the dress.””

Maya felt a chill.

“But Evelyn bought it.””

Lena shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Evelyn bought the replacement.””

Darius frowned.

“Replacement?””

Lena nodded.

“The original dress was never meant for Maya.””

Silence.

“Then whose was it?”” Maya asked.

Lena looked directly at her.

And the answer changed everything.

“Yours.””

Maya stared.

“What?””

Lena stepped closer.

“The dress was made before you were born.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Darius looked at the receipt.

At the date.

At the coral gown.

At the impossible timeline.

Then Lena said the words that made Evelyn collapse into the nearest chair.

“Because that dress was created for the daughter everyone thought I lost.””

Maya’s face went pale.

“What are you saying?””

Lena looked at her.

And whispered:

“I’m saying…”

She paused.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You were never supposed to discover who you are this way.””

A sound came from behind them.

A phone dropping onto the marble floor.

Everyone turned.

Adrian was staring at the screen.

Because the message he had just received came from the person who had been controlling everything.

And the final line read:

*She knows too much now. Finish what you started.*
