Chapter 6: The Missing Piece
The room exploded into chaos.
Maya looked down at the torn section of her gown.
The hidden seam was open.
But empty.
Someone had taken whatever was inside.
Darius immediately turned toward the doorway.
Nobody was there.
The hallway outside remained filled with distant wedding music.
People laughing.
People celebrating.
Completely unaware that something had disappeared moments before.
“Who was here?”” Darius demanded.
Nobody answered.
Marcus moved toward the door.
“I told you.””
Darius stopped him.
“Told me what?””
“That they were watching.””
Maya looked at him.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Evelyn slowly sat down.
The strength she had carried all night was gone.
“I should have destroyed it.””
Darius looked at her.
“What?””
Evelyn stared at the empty seam.
“If I had destroyed the dress when I first got it, none of this would have happened.””
Maya looked hurt.
“So you admit you were trying to destroy it.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked her.
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
Maya laughed bitterly.
“Of what?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“Of losing you.””
The answer was too emotional to sound like an excuse.
Maya didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Darius stepped closer.
“Start from the beginning.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You really want that?””
“Yes.””
She took a deep breath.
“Your mother and I grew up together. She was always the brave one. The one who fought for what was right.””
Maya listened silently.
“She discovered something she wasn’t supposed to know.””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“And someone made sure she paid for it.””
Darius looked at him.
“What did she discover?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then reached into his jacket.
He pulled out another photograph.
This one older.
Damaged.
He handed it to Maya.
She looked down.
It showed her mother standing beside someone.
A woman.
A woman Maya recognized immediately.
Evelyn.
But they looked younger.
And happy.
Maya whispered:
“You were close.””
Evelyn nodded.
“She was my sister.””
“No.””
Maya looked up.
“She wasn’t your sister?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“She was.””
The room went silent.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Then why did you say—”
“Because family isn’t always blood.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“And sometimes blood is the reason people get hurt.””
Darius studied the photograph.
“There’s someone else in this picture.””
Everyone looked.
A third person stood in the background.
A man.
His face partially hidden.
Maya stared.
“Who is that?””
Evelyn’s expression changed.
She recognized him.
Darius noticed.
“You know him.””
Evelyn slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked at Maya.
Then whispered:
“Your father.””
Maya froze.
The room became silent.
“My father?””
Evelyn nodded.
“But he’s supposed to be…”
“Dead?”” Marcus finished.
Maya’s eyes widened.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at the empty seam in the dress.
“That’s what everyone was told.””
Darius’s expression hardened.
“Everyone?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Who knew the truth?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
Her eyes moved toward the wedding hall.
Toward the hundreds of people waiting downstairs.
Toward the family members smiling and taking pictures.
Maya followed her gaze.
A horrible realization crossed her face.
“Someone here knows.””
Evelyn nodded.
“And they know more than we do.””
Darius looked back at the torn dress.
The evidence was gone.
The secret was exposed.
And the person who took it was still inside the mansion.
Then Maya’s phone buzzed.
She looked down.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
One sentence.
Her hands started shaking.
Darius noticed.
“What does it say?””
Maya slowly turned the screen toward him.
The message read:
*Stop searching for answers, Maya. Your mother died because she asked too many questions. Don’t make the same mistake.*
Darius’s face changed.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Marcus whispered:
“They know you found out.””
Maya looked toward the wedding hall doors.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
she realized the person trying to destroy her future was standing somewhere among the people waiting to celebrate it.
