Chapter 5: The Secret Evelyn Buried
Nobody moved.
The stranger stood in the doorway like he belonged there.
Like he had been expected.
Like this moment had been planned long before anyone entered the room.
Darius immediately stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
Then at Evelyn.
Then back at Maya.
“My name is Marcus.””
Maya’s face went pale.
The name.
The photograph.
The receipt.
Everything suddenly felt connected.
Evelyn moved quickly.
“Marcus, you need to leave.””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“You still think you can control everything.””
Darius looked between them.
“You two know each other.””
Marcus nodded.
“We know each other very well.””
Maya looked at Evelyn.
“What is happening?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Marcus walked into the room.
His eyes stayed on Maya.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
Darius blocked his path.
“Stop.””
Marcus stopped.
“You don’t walk in here and confuse everyone without explaining.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You’re right.””
Then he looked at Maya.
“But she deserves the truth.””
Evelyn’s voice became sharp.
“No.””
Marcus ignored her.
“Maya, your mother’s name was Lena Carter.””
Maya froze.
The room became silent.
“My mother?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Darius looked confused.
“Maya knows her mother.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. She knows the story she was given.””
Maya’s eyes filled with confusion.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn looked away.
And that hurt Maya more than anything.
Because Evelyn’s silence was not denial.
It was confirmation.
Maya stepped back.
“No.””
Marcus spoke gently.
“Your mother and Evelyn were sisters.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
Maya stared at Evelyn.
“No.””
Evelyn whispered:
“Maya…”
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“You knew?””
Evelyn couldn’t answer.
“You knew this whole time?””
“Maya, listen—”
“No!””
Her voice broke.
“You knew who I was?””
Evelyn looked devastated.
“I knew who your mother was.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Maya’s tears fell.
“You knew who I was.””
Darius looked at Evelyn.
“Is this true?””
Evelyn swallowed.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But it destroyed everything.
Maya covered her mouth.
All the dinners.
All the advice.
All the moments where Evelyn acted like she was protecting her.
It suddenly felt different.
“You brought me into this family because of her.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why?””
“Because I promised her.””
Maya stared.
“Promised her what?””
Evelyn looked toward the torn dress.
Her eyes filled with regret.
“To protect you.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“And she did.””
Darius looked at him.
“Then why destroy Maya’s dress?””
Marcus answered before Evelyn could.
“Because the dress was evidence.””
Maya turned.
“Evidence of what?””
Nobody spoke.
Darius looked at Evelyn.
“Tell us.””
Evelyn’s hands trembled.
“I bought that dress because Marcus told me someone was looking for it.””
Maya frowned.
“Someone?””
Marcus nodded.
“The person who ordered it.””
Darius looked at the receipt.
“But Evelyn purchased it.””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
“Because the original buyer could not be connected to it.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Maya touched the coral fabric.
“What is so important about this dress?””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Three months ago, I received a message.””
“From who?””
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“Someone who knew about your mother.””
Maya’s breathing became uneven.
“What did they want?””
Evelyn looked at the scissors.
“I was supposed to destroy the dress before you ever wore it.””
Darius stared.
“But you didn’t.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I couldn’t.””
Maya whispered:
“Why?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“Because I realized the dress was the only thing that could prove what happened to your mother.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Darius looked at the damaged gown.
The torn neckline.
The missing piece of fabric.
“The dress was hiding something.””
Marcus nodded.
“Something sewn inside it.””
Maya looked down.
“Inside my wedding dress?””
“Yes.””
Darius moved closer.
“Where?””
Marcus looked at the torn section.
But before he could answer, Evelyn suddenly grabbed the dress.
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She stared at the tear she had created.
At the place where the scissors had cut.
Because now she saw it.
A small piece of white material hidden beneath the lining.
A place she had never reached before.
A place someone had carefully concealed.
Darius noticed.
“What is it?””
Evelyn slowly touched the hidden seam.
Her voice became barely audible.
“They weren’t trying to hide the dress.””
She looked at Maya.
“They were trying to hide what was inside it.””
And then the mansion lights suddenly flickered.
The room went dark for one second.
When the lights returned…
May you like
the hidden seam had already been cut open.
And whatever was inside the dress was gone.
