Chapter 4: The Person Behind The Call

The dressing room door handle moved slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Everyone froze.

Maya’s fingers tightened around the torn fabric of her gown.

Darius stepped forward instinctively, placing himself between the door and the two women behind him.

Evelyn looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not annoyed.

Terrified.

And that frightened Darius more than anything she had done that night.

The door opened.

But nobody entered.

A small envelope slid across the marble floor.

Then the door closed again.

Silence.

Maya stared at the envelope.

“What is that?””

Evelyn whispered one word.

“No.””

Darius looked at her.

“You know what that is?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

He walked over and picked it up.

The envelope was plain white.

No name.

No address.

Only one handwritten word on the front.

MAYA.

Darius looked at Evelyn.

“Why would someone leave this here?””

Her expression hardened.

“Don’t open it.””

That was enough.

Darius tore it open.

Inside was a single photograph.

He pulled it out.

And the air left his lungs.

Maya stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Darius didn’t respond.

She reached for the photo.

The image showed a younger Evelyn.

Standing outside a clothing boutique.

Holding a coral-colored dress bag.

And beside her…

was someone Maya had never seen before.

A man.

Older.

Wearing a black suit.

Maya looked confused.

“Who is that?””

Evelyn immediately grabbed the photograph.

“Give me that.””

Darius pulled it away.

“No.””

His eyes stayed on the image.

“Who is he?””

Evelyn looked at him.

Then at Maya.

And for the first time that night, she looked like someone who had run out of places to hide.

“He’s someone from my past.””

Maya frowned.

“That’s not an answer.””

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“It’s the only one you need.””

Darius laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe she was still trying to control the conversation.

“You cut Maya’s dress. You lied. You hid a receipt.

Someone leaves a photo at the door. And your explanation is ‘my past’?””

Evelyn looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

The phone rang again.

Everyone looked at Evelyn.

This time, she didn’t move.

Darius glanced at the screen.

The same name appeared.

The same name that had changed everything.

Maya noticed his expression.

“Who is it?””

Darius slowly turned the phone around.

Maya read the name.

Her face changed.

Because she recognized it.

Not because she knew the person.

Because she had heard the name before.

“Wait…”

She looked at Evelyn.

“Why does that name sound familiar?””

Nobody answered.

Maya’s eyes moved between them.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

A long breath escaped her.

Then she walked to the glass table and sat down.

The woman who had controlled every room she entered suddenly looked exhausted.

“I wanted tonight to happen differently.””

Darius crossed his arms.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at Maya.

“I wanted you to have one perfect moment.””

Maya stared at her.

“You destroyed my dress five minutes before my wedding.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked them.

Evelyn continued.

“Because the dress was the problem.””

Darius’s expression darkened.

“The dress?””

Evelyn nodded.

“You think that gown was chosen because Maya liked it.””

Maya looked down.

“It was.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice was quiet.

“It was chosen because someone wanted her to wear it.””

A chill moved through the room.

Darius stepped closer.

“Who?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Maya looked at the photograph.

“Was it him?””

Evelyn’s silence was the answer.

Darius looked at the photo again.

The older man standing beside Evelyn.

The coral dress bag in her hand.

The date.

Three months ago.

Everything connected.

“Who is he?”” Darius demanded.

Evelyn looked at him.

“His name is Marcus.””

The name hung in the room.

Darius’s face changed.

Maya noticed.

“You know him.””

Darius didn’t answer.

“Darius.””

He looked away.

That was all Maya needed.

“You know him.””

Darius rubbed his forehead.

“I knew of him.””

Evelyn watched him carefully.

“What did you know?””

Darius looked at her.

“That he disappeared years ago.””

Maya’s voice became smaller.

“Why does this involve me?””

No one answered.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Evelyn stood.

“Maya, you need to leave this room.””

Maya blinked.

“What?””

“Now.””

Darius stepped between them.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You don’t understand what’s coming.””

“Then tell us.””

“I’m trying to protect her.””

Maya shook her head.

“No. You keep saying that every time you hurt me.””

Evelyn looked at her.

And this time, the sadness in her eyes was real.

“Because I know what happens when people find out the truth.””

Darius stared at her.

“What truth?””

Before Evelyn could answer, the door opened again.

This time, someone was standing there.

A stranger.

An older Black man in a black suit.

His eyes went straight to Maya.

The room went completely silent.

Maya looked at him.

May you like

And he whispered:

“I finally found you.””
