Chapter 2: The Receipt Nobody Was Supposed To Find
The receipt was only a small piece of paper.
But in Darius’s hand, it felt heavier than the entire mansion.
He stared at it under the bright dressing room lights.
Maya watched his face carefully.
She knew him.
She knew the difference between anger and confusion.
This was something else.
This was realization.
“Darius?”” Maya whispered.
He didn’t answer.
Evelyn took a step forward.
“Give me that.””
Darius looked up.
“No.””
His voice was different now.
Calm.
Dangerously calm.
Evelyn forced a laugh.
“You’re making a scene over a receipt?””
Darius folded the paper slightly.
“Then why were you hiding it?””
The question sat between them.
Evelyn looked away.
Maya moved closer to Darius.
“What does it say?””
He looked down again.
The paper was old enough to have been handled many times.
But not old enough to be forgotten.
A custom order.
A coral gown.
A name.
Darius’s jaw tightened.
Evelyn reached for the receipt again.
“Darius, you’re misunderstanding.””
“No,” he said.
He looked at the torn dress.
Then at the scissors.
Then back at Evelyn.
“I’m starting to understand.””
Maya touched the damaged neckline of her gown.
Her hands were still shaking.
“Why would you buy this dress?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
“Maya asked you a question,” Darius said.
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“You think you know everything because you found a piece of paper?””
“No.””
Darius held up the receipt.
“I think I know something because you lied.””
The accusation made Evelyn’s face stiffen.
“I didn’t lie.””
“You said Maya ruined the dress.””
“She did.””
Maya stared at her.
“I didn’t.””
Evelyn looked at Maya with disappointment that felt almost rehearsed.
“You have no idea how much trouble you create when you refuse to listen.””
Darius stepped between them.
“Enough.””
The room went quiet again.
Outside the dressing room, the mansion continued preparing for the wedding.
People laughed.
Glasses clinked.
Music played.
Nobody downstairs knew that the entire evening had just cracked open.
Maya looked at Darius.
“I thought she wanted me here.””
Darius softened.
“Maya…”
“No,” she said quietly.
“I really did.””
She looked around the room.
At the expensive decorations.
At the flowers.
At the perfect image Evelyn had created.
“I thought she was finally accepting me.””
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“This is ridiculous.””
Darius looked at her.
“You destroyed her dress.””
“I fixed a mistake.””
“You cut it.””
“I was protecting this family.””
Maya frowned.
“From what?””
Evelyn looked at her.
For a moment, something almost like fear appeared in her eyes.
Then it vanished.
“You wouldn’t understand.””
Darius noticed.
Again.
That hesitation.
That hidden meaning.
He moved toward the glass table and placed the receipt beside the scissors.
“Explain.””
Evelyn stayed silent.
“Explain why you bought Maya’s custom dress.””
She looked at the paper.
Then at Maya.
Then at Darius.
“You really want the truth?””
Maya swallowed.
“Yes.””
Evelyn walked slowly toward the table.
Her heels clicked against the marble floor.
“I did what I had to do.””
“That’s not an answer,” Darius said.
“It’s the only answer you’re getting right now.””
Darius stared at her.
“No.””
Evelyn stopped.
“No?””
“No.””
His voice became firmer.
“You don’t get to destroy her dress, lie about it, hide evidence, and then decide when the conversation ends.””
For the first time, Evelyn looked like she wasn’t in control.
Maya noticed it too.
And that frightened her more than the scissors.
Because Evelyn Carter was never the person who lost control.
Not at family dinners.
Not at business meetings.
Not anywhere.
But tonight…
something had gone wrong.
Darius picked up the receipt again.
The date printed on it kept bothering him.
Three months ago.
Before Maya had chosen the dress.
Before the final fitting.
Before anyone knew exactly what she wanted.
“How did you know?”” he asked.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Know what?””
Darius held up the receipt.
“How did you know this would be her dress?””
Evelyn’s lips parted.
She had an answer.
Maya could see it.
But she didn’t say it.
Instead, Evelyn reached for the scissors.
And Darius immediately grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t.””
Her eyes met his.
Then the hallway outside suddenly echoed with a sound.
A phone ringing.
Not Maya’s.
Not Darius’s.
Evelyn’s.
The name flashing on the screen made her entire expression change.
Darius saw it.
Maya saw it.
May you like
And before Evelyn could silence the call, Darius caught a glimpse of the name.
A name neither of them expected.
