Chapter 10: The Father I Never Knew

The room went silent after Daniel read the sentence.

Not the kind of silence that comes after an argument.

The kind that comes when everyone hears something they were never prepared to hear.

The man who raised him is not the only father who loved him.

I stared at the words.

Again.

And again.

The handwriting was my mother’s.

I knew that.

I had seen her notes in old photo albums. I had seen the way she wrote birthday cards for Marcus before she died.

The curves.

The small details.

The way certain letters leaned slightly to the right.

It was hers.

Which meant the impossible question sitting in the middle of the room was real.

“Dad?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because my father always answered.

Even when he didn’t know what to say, he found something.

A lesson.

A joke.

A reason.

But now he just stood there.

Silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who is my father?””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa looked away.

Nia covered her mouth.

Raymond lowered his eyes.

And Marcus finally whispered:

“Malik…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No, don’t say my name like everything is okay.””

His face broke.

“It’s not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

He couldn’t.

That was the answer.

The answer was standing right in front of me.

I looked at the man who taught me how to throw a football.

The man who sat beside my hospital bed when I broke my arm.

The man who told me I was his greatest accomplishment.

And suddenly I wondered if all those moments were real.

“Was I ever yours?””

Marcus looked like I had punched him.

“Don’t say that.””

“Why?””

Tears burned my eyes.

“Because I need to know.””

He stepped toward me.

“You are my son.””

“But am I?””

The question hurt both of us.

I saw it.

I didn’t want to hurt him.

But I needed the truth more than I needed comfort.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Marcus is your father.””

I looked at him.

“You just said—”

“I said your mother believed another man loved you.””

He paused.

“That doesn’t mean Marcus didn’t.””

My confusion grew.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus sat down.

Slowly.

Like his legs had become too heavy.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Tell me now.””

He looked at the old letter.

Then at me.

“Your biological father was someone your mother knew before me.””

The words felt strange.

Biological father.

Someone else.

A person who existed before the life I knew.

“Who?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“His name was Elijah.””

Nobody spoke.

The name felt like a ghost entering the room.

“Where is he?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“He died before you were born.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did my mother write that?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Because Elijah wasn’t just a person from her past.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“He was my friend.””

The room became quiet.

“You knew him?””

Marcus nodded.

“He was like a brother to me.””

I felt sick.

“So everyone knew?””

“No,” Marcus said quickly.

“Not everyone.””

“Who knew?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She lowered her eyes.

“Vanessa knew because she found the records.””

My head turned.

“You knew I wasn’t his?””

Vanessa looked devastated.

“I knew there was a secret.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She swallowed.

“I didn’t know the full truth.””

“Then why hide the letter?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Marcus.

“Of what this would do to you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you protected him.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I protected you.””

I wanted to believe her.

But too many people had used those words.

Protected.

Safe.

Family.

All of them sounded different now.

Daniel opened the flash drive.

“I think you need to see something.””

Marcus stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“No?””

He shook his head.

“Not like this.””

Daniel stared.

“Marcus.””

“You don’t get to walk into my house after years away and decide when my son learns everything.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“I’m sorry.””

That surprised me.

Because he actually sounded sorry.

“I should have come sooner.””

Marcus looked away.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

A painful pause.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Elijah left something behind.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel reached into his folder.

He pulled out another document.

Not a letter.

A legal paper.

He placed it on the table.

“This is why the money was targeted.””

Marcus grabbed it.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then his face changed.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your biological father created a trust for you before he died.””

I stared.

“A trust?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Nobody answered.

Then I noticed something.

The same fear.

The same hesitation.

The same silence.

They weren’t hiding a small amount.

They were hiding something massive.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Why didn’t I know?””

Daniel said quietly:

“Because Elijah didn’t trust the wrong person.””

A chill moved through the room.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at the old envelope.

Then at me.

“The person who has been trying to control Malik’s future from the beginning.””

Nobody spoke.

Until the front door opened again.

And a voice came from outside.

A voice I had never heard before.

But everyone else recognized.

“Marcus.””

My father froze.

Daniel turned pale.

Vanessa whispered:

“No…”

The stranger stepped inside.

May you like

And the first thing he said was:

“After twenty years, you still haven’t told him the truth.””
