Chapter 13: The Enemy Inside the Family

I read the sentence three times.

Marcus did not take you away from your family.

He took you away from the person who wanted to destroy you.

My hands trembled as I held the letter.

For years, I thought the biggest betrayal was that people had hidden the truth from me.

But now I was standing in the middle of a room full of people who had all been protecting a different piece of the same story.

And somehow…

Nobody had been protecting me from Marcus.

They had been protecting me from someone else.

I looked up.

“Mom wrote this?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you never tell me?””

His eyes dropped.

“Because I promised her.””

I stared.

“You promised her to let me believe a lie?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I promised her to let you grow up without fear.””

Charles scoffed.

“That’s the story he tells himself.””

Everyone looked at him.

My grandfather stood near the doorway, calm and confident, like he had been waiting years for this moment.

“You want him to believe I was the danger.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“You were.””

Charles smiled.

“Then tell him.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at my father.

“Tell me.””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“When your mother was pregnant, she discovered something about Charles.””

My eyes moved to my grandfather.

“What?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then Daniel answered.

“Your grandfather wasn’t just managing family money.””

Charles’s expression changed slightly.

“He was using it.””

My grandfather laughed.

“That’s a serious accusation.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because it’s true.””

I looked between them.

“What does this have to do with me?””

Marcus looked at the letter.

“Your mother found evidence that Charles had been moving money through accounts connected to the family.””

Charles shook his head.

“Lies.””

“Your mother found the records.””

“And she was confused.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“She wasn’t confused.””

His voice became harder.

“She was scared.””

The room went silent.

My mother.

Scared.

I had spent my whole life imagining her as someone gentle.

Someone kind.

Someone who left behind nothing but love.

But now I realized she had been fighting battles before I was even born.

Daniel opened another folder.

“These are copies of the documents she found.””

Charles looked at him.

“You kept those?””

“Yes.””

“After all these years?””

Daniel nodded.

“Because I knew one day Malik would need them.””

I looked at the papers.

Names.

Numbers.

Dates.

Things I didn’t fully understand.

But one thing was clear.

My grandfather’s name appeared repeatedly.

I looked at Charles.

“Is this true?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the first time I saw him lose control.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Fear.

“You have no idea what you’re looking at.””

“Then explain.””

He stepped closer.

“Malik, people like them will tell you anything to make themselves look innocent.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“Don’t talk to me like you know me.””

His expression changed.

Because he realized something.

I wasn’t the child he expected.

I was someone who had spent two days watching every person I trusted reveal a new secret.

I was done being controlled.

Charles looked at Marcus.

“You raised him to hate me.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why does he look at me like that?””

“Because he finally knows the truth.””

Charles stared at me.

Then slowly reached into his coat.

Everyone reacted.

Marcus moved immediately.

But Charles only pulled out an old photograph.

He placed it on the table.

A picture of my mother.

Holding me as a baby.

And standing beside her…

Was Charles.

“I loved my daughter.””

His voice softened.

“I loved you.””

For a second, I saw something real.

Pain.

Not manipulation.

Pain.

But then he continued.

“And I lost everything because your father took you away.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Charles looked at him.

“Yes.””

The argument became louder.

But I stopped listening.

Because I noticed something.

The photo.

There was writing on the back.

I turned it over.

Three words.

My mother’s handwriting.

*Trust Marcus.*

My heart stopped.

I looked at Charles.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at the photo.

Charles saw it.

His face changed.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

Nobody spoke.

I held the photo tighter.

“Why?””

Charles didn’t answer.

“Why wasn’t I supposed to find this?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa quietly said:

“Because your mother knew.””

I turned.

“Knew what?””

Vanessa looked at Charles.

“She knew he would come back.””

The room froze.

Charles’s face went blank.

Marcus whispered:

“What did you say?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“I found another letter.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

She looked toward the old bank envelope.

“Hidden with the original documents.””

Nobody moved.

“What did it say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“It said…”

She looked at Charles.

“‘If Charles ever returns, Malik must never be alone with him.’”

The room went silent.

Charles’s expression changed completely.

May you like

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.
