Chapter 5: The Letter My Father Hid

Nobody spoke after Raymond said those words.

A truth about your family.

The sentence stayed in the air.

Like smoke that refused to disappear.

I stared at my father.

For eighteen years, I thought I knew everything about him.

I knew his favorite food.

I knew he hated leaving dishes in the sink.

I knew he always checked the doors twice before going to sleep.

I knew he kept every birthday card I ever gave him.

But suddenly, I wondered what else he had kept.

What else he had never said.

“Dad?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw hesitation in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“What did you write?””

Marcus looked down.

“I wrote what I needed you to know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

His shoulders dropped.

“I know.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“Marcus, please.””

He looked at her.

“Please what?””

“Don’t do this here.””

He stared at her.

“You already did.””

That hurt.

Even I felt it.

Because my father wasn’t yelling.

He wasn’t insulting her.

He was simply tired.

Tired of being the last person to know the truth.

Raymond picked up the second envelope.

“The letter was supposed to be opened when Malik turned eighteen.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because your father wanted you to be old enough to understand.””

“Understand what?””

Raymond looked at Marcus.

“Do you want to tell him?””

My father didn’t answer.

The silence became unbearable.

Finally, he walked toward the kitchen island.

He picked up the document.

“When Malik was born, I created the fund.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You know part of it.””

The room went quiet.

“When your mother and I started saving, we knew we wanted you to have options.””

My chest tightened at the mention of her.

My biological mother had died when I was young.

Most of my memories of her came from old pictures.

“She wanted you to go to college without worrying about debt,” Marcus continued.

I swallowed.

“She wrote something for you too.””

My eyes moved to the envelope.

“The letter?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked away.

I noticed.

“Where is it?””

Nobody answered.

Then Raymond spoke.

“She took it.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

She looked at me.

“I knew what that letter would say.””

My stomach dropped.

“You read it?””

She didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

My father closed his eyes.

“You read a letter from my wife to my son?””

“I didn’t mean to.””

“You opened it.””

“I was looking for something else.””

“What?””

Again.

Silence.

Always silence.

I stepped forward.

“What was in it?””

Vanessa looked at me.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.

But then her phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

She grabbed it quickly.

Too quickly.

Marcus noticed.

“Who is messaging you?””

“Nobody.””

“Give me the phone.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

My father held out his hand.

“Vanessa.””

She backed away.

“No.””

The room changed.

Because this wasn’t the reaction of someone protecting privacy.

This was the reaction of someone protecting evidence.

Marcus took one step closer.

“Give me the phone.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at me.

Then Nia.

Then Marcus.

“I was trying to protect all of you.””

Nia shook her head.

“People say that when they hurt people.””

Vanessa looked at her.

The words clearly hit.

Before anyone could speak again, Raymond’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Marcus noticed.

“What happened?””

Raymond answered quietly.

Then his face went pale.

“I need to go.””

My father stepped in front of him.

“No.””

“Marcus—”

“No one walks into my house with secrets and leaves before explaining.””

Raymond looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

Then at the envelope.

“There’s someone else who knows about the fund.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Raymond hesitated.

Then said:

“Someone who has been searching for Malik.””

The room went silent.

Marcus frowned.

“Searching for my son?””

Raymond nodded.

“For years.””

My breathing stopped.

“Who?””

Raymond looked at Vanessa.

May you like

And whispered:

“The person who originally put the first money into that account.””
