Chapter 9: The Secret My Mother Left Behind
I didn’t speak.
I couldn’t.
The sentence repeated in my head.
You weren’t the only person your father was trying to protect.
For years, I thought my story was simple.
My mother died.
My father raised me.
We survived.
That was it.
But now I was standing in a room full of people who knew pieces of my life that I had never been allowed to see.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Stop.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“You promised.””
My father’s expression changed.
A mixture of anger and fear.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No, Marcus. I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Nia looked between them.
“Someone please explain.””
Nobody answered.
I looked at my father.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
And I saw the pain in his eyes.
Not the pain of being caught.
The pain of someone who had carried something alone for too long.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
He looked down.
“I don’t know.””
That hurt.
More than I expected.
Because there was no excuse.
No perfect moment.
Just years of silence.
Daniel placed the flash drive on the table.
“Your mother found documents before she died.””
“What documents?””
“About your family.””
I frowned.
“My family?””
Daniel nodded.
“She found out someone had been hiding financial information from Marcus.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
But Daniel shook his head.
“Not Vanessa.””
The room went quiet.
My father looked confused.
“Then who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
“Your mother believed someone close to you was lying.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
My father immediately shook his head.
“No.””
The word came too fast.
Too defensive.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You know.””
Marcus looked away.
And suddenly I understood.
He did know.
“Dad?””
He closed his eyes.
“I didn’t want you involved.””
“Who?””
A long silence.
Then Marcus whispered:
“Your grandfather.””
I froze.
“My grandfather?””
My mother’s father.
A man who had been gone from my life for years.
A man I barely remembered.
Daniel nodded.
“Your mother discovered he had been hiding something.””
“What?””
Nobody answered.
I felt anger rising.
“Why does everyone keep doing this?””
My voice broke.
“Why do I have to drag every answer out of people?””
The room became silent.
Marcus looked at me.
“I was trying to protect your childhood.””
“I’m eighteen.””
“I know.””
“Then treat me like it.””
That hurt him.
I saw it.
But I needed him to feel something.
Because I had been feeling everything.
Daniel looked at the envelope.
“Your mother left instructions.””
I turned.
“What?””
“The letter.””
My heart started racing.
“The letter wasn’t just a goodbye.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“You don’t know that.””
“I do.””
“How?””
Daniel reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
My mother’s handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
Even after all these years.
My hands started shaking.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“She found it before I did.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I was trying to keep him from getting hurt.””
I stared at her.
“You keep saying that.””
She looked at me.
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why did you lie?””
Her face fell.
“Because the truth would destroy the way you see your father.””
Everyone went quiet.
My father looked at her.
“What did you find?””
Vanessa looked down.
And for the first time, she looked completely broken.
“I found out Marcus wasn’t the only person your mother trusted.””
I waited.
“And?””
She looked at me.
“She trusted someone else with a secret.””
Daniel unfolded the paper.
There was one sentence written on it.
A sentence that made my entire body go cold.
*“If anything happens to me, tell Malik that the man who raised him is not the only father who loved him.””*
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I looked at Marcus.
My father.
The only father I had ever known.
May you like
And for the first time in my life…
I wondered who I really was.
