Chapter 6: The Name on the Old Account
The next morning, the house looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The same sunlight came through the windows.
The same coffee machine sat on the counter.
The same family photos hung on the walls.
But nothing felt familiar anymore.
Because once you learn someone has been hiding a secret, every memory starts looking different.
I stood in the kitchen staring at the marble island.
The place where Vanessa had thrown my bag.
The place where she had stacked my money.
The place where my entire understanding of my family had broken apart.
Marcus sat at the table with Raymond.
Neither man had slept.
Nia sat beside me, quietly eating breakfast.
Vanessa was across the room.
She looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not controlling.
Just exhausted.
My father placed a document on the table.
“This account has three names attached.””
I looked up.
“Three?””
He nodded.
“Mine.””
He pointed.
“Your mother’s.””
My chest tightened.
“And?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Raymond did.
“The third name.””
He tapped the paper.
I leaned forward.
Then I saw it.
A name I didn’t recognize.
But Vanessa did.
Her face changed instantly.
“Who is that?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Tell him.””
She shook her head.
“Marcus…”
“Tell him.””
The room went silent.
Finally, she whispered:
“Your mother’s brother.””
I frowned.
“My uncle?””
I barely remembered him.
Only small pieces.
A voice.
A laugh.
A man in old photographs.
“But he disappeared,” I said.
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
No answer.
Again.
The same painful silence.
I looked around.
“Why does everyone know things except me?””
Nobody spoke.
That hurt more than the secrets.
Because suddenly I realized everyone had been protecting something.
Everyone except me.
Raymond opened a folder.
“There’s more.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
“The missing money wasn’t withdrawn randomly.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
My father noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Raymond placed another paper down.
“Every transfer has a destination.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Where did it go?””
She whispered:
“I can explain.””
My father’s voice was cold.
“Then explain.””
She stared at the paper.
“I was contacted.””
“By who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She took a breath.
“By your brother-in-law.””
My father froze.
“My brother-in-law is dead.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But it changed everything.
Marcus slowly stood.
“What did you say?””
“He isn’t dead.””
Nobody moved.
I felt the room spin.
My mother’s brother.
A man everyone believed was gone.
A man connected to my college fund.
A man whose name appeared on an account nobody told me about.
“He’s alive?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus slammed his hand onto the table.
“Then how did he contact you?””
She flinched.
A long silence followed.
Then she reached into her purse.
Slowly.
Everyone watched.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I received this three weeks ago.””
My father took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer.
I stood.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Real fear.
He handed me the paper.
There was only one sentence written on it.
One sentence that made my entire body go cold.
*“Tell Malik the truth before I do.””*
At the bottom was a signature.
A name.
A name that belonged to someone who should have been gone forever.
May you like
And beneath it was a date.
Tomorrow.
