Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

The date on the paper felt heavier than the paper itself.

Tomorrow.

One word.

One day.

One impossible promise from a man who wasn’t supposed to exist.

I read the name at the bottom again and again, hoping somehow my eyes were wrong.

But they weren’t.

The signature belonged to Daniel Carter.

My mother’s brother.

My uncle.

The man everyone said had disappeared before I was old enough to understand what that meant.

My father took the paper from my hand.

His fingers were shaking.

That scared me more than anything.

Marcus was the strongest person I knew.

He was the person who carried heavy furniture by himself, who stood between danger and his family, who never admitted when something hurt him.

But now he was staring at a piece of paper like it had opened a door he had spent years trying to keep closed.

“Where did you get this?”” he asked Vanessa.

She sat quietly.

“Three weeks ago.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“After you took the money?””

The question landed hard.

Vanessa looked down.

“I didn’t take it for myself.””

My jaw tightened.

“Does that make it better?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

For once, she didn’t defend herself.

That almost made it worse.

Because anger was easier.

Anger gave me something to hold onto.

But seeing regret on her face made everything complicated.

Nia looked at the paper.

“Who is Daniel?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then my father sat down.

“My wife’s brother.””

He looked toward the old family photos on the wall.

“Your mother trusted him.””

I noticed the way he said it.

Past tense.

“Then what happened?””

Marcus rubbed his hands together.

“Daniel made choices that hurt a lot of people.””

“What choices?””

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She closed hers.

“Bad ones,” Marcus said.

That wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

“I’m eighteen, Dad.””

My voice shook.

“I’m old enough to know why my own family has been hiding things from me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa quietly said:

“Daniel disappeared after he lost everything.””

“What does that mean?””

“He made a business deal that failed.””

Raymond looked uncomfortable.

Marcus noticed.

“You know more.””

Raymond sighed.

“Yes.””

“Then talk.””

Raymond leaned forward.

“Daniel wasn’t just your mother’s brother. He was involved in managing part of the family’s finances.””

My father’s expression darkened.

“And he betrayed us.””

Raymond nodded.

“He borrowed money without permission.””

“How much?””

Raymond looked at me.

“A lot.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“From my college fund?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Not directly.””

That word bothered me.

Directly.

Because it meant something had happened around it.

“What happened?””

Raymond looked at Marcus.

“I think you should tell him.””

My father looked away.

For a moment, I thought he would refuse.

But then he spoke.

“After your mother died, Daniel came to me.””

The room became quiet.

“He said he wanted to help. He said he wanted to make sure you had support.””

Marcus swallowed.

“But later I found out he had been using his access to move money around.””

My eyes moved to the envelope.

“So he knew about the account.””

“Yes.””

“And he could access it?””

“No.””

My father answered quickly.

“Not without approval.””

“Then why is his name there?””

No answer.

That was the problem.

There were too many questions.

Too many missing pieces.

Raymond opened another folder.

“There is something else.””

Everyone looked at him.

He pulled out a printed record.

“This is from the original account setup.””

Marcus took it.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then he froze.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

I stood.

“Dad.””

Slowly, he handed me the paper.

At the bottom were three signatures.

Marcus.

My mother.

And Daniel.

But next to Daniel’s name was a handwritten note.

Authorized temporary guardian.

I looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“It means Daniel had control over the account if something happened to both of your parents.””

The room went cold.

“But my dad is alive.””

“Yes.””

“So why would he have control?””

Vanessa looked away.

Because she knew.

Because she had known all along.

My father saw it too.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes closed.

“I didn’t want you to know this way.””

“Know what?””

She looked at him.

“That Daniel never stopped watching Malik.””

A silence followed.

I felt a chill.

“Watching me?””

She nodded.

“He knew where you went to school.””

My heart started racing.

“He knew about your basketball games.””

Nia looked scared.

“He knew about us?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

My father stood.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Raymond’s phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Raymond turned the phone around.

A message.

One sentence.

*“I’m already inside the city.””*

My father stared.

“When is he coming?””

Raymond looked at the date on the message.

Then at us.

“He’s not coming tomorrow.””

May you like

A pause.

“He’s coming today.””
