Chapter 10: The Man Who Vanished

The name on the screen felt impossible.

Ethan Cole.

My father’s former assistant.

The man who had been beside my family for fifteen years.

The man who knew every secret inside Bennett Global Holdings.

The man who disappeared the night of my accident.

For six months, everyone told me the same thing.

Ethan had abandoned his job.

Ethan had left the city.

Ethan had taken a deal somewhere else.

But nobody ever explained why his phone stopped working.

Why his apartment was empty.

Why his car was found three blocks from the crash site.

And now, after all this time, he was contacting me.

I stared at the message.

*I know who really caused the accident.*

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Mr. Bennett?””

Nia’s voice pulled me back.

I looked around the ballroom.

Richard.

Marcus.

Vanessa.

Everyone was watching.

Everyone wanted to know what I would do next.

But this was different.

This wasn’t about ownership.

This wasn’t about revenge.

This was about the night everything changed.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you know Ethan was alive?””

His face immediately answered.

No.

“I thought he was gone.””

The honesty in his voice surprised me.

“Gone?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“After the accident, Ethan disappeared before I could reach him.””

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because he found something.””

Richard suddenly spoke.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

He looked irritated now.

Not confident.

Not powerful.

I realized something.

Richard was afraid of Ethan.

That mattered.

“What did Ethan find?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Richard stepped forward.

“You’re chasing ghosts.””

I looked at him.

“Funny.””

A pause.

“Because you look terrified of one.””

The guests watched Richard carefully.

For the first time, the man who had controlled the room all night looked like he was losing control.

He looked at Marcus.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“You have no idea what you’re stepping into.””

I smiled.

“You keep saying that.””

I held up my phone.

“And every time you do, I learn I’m closer.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

Nia moved closer.

“Should we respond?””

I looked at the message again.

Ethan wasn’t asking for money.

He wasn’t asking for protection.

He was giving me information.

That meant he knew something dangerous.

“Call him.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if Ethan is reaching out now, there’s a reason.””

“Exactly.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“And that reason might get you hurt.””

I looked around the ballroom.

At the people who had tried to erase me.

At the people who thought I would never stand again.

“You think I’m still the man from six months ago.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You’re not.””

“No.””

I looked toward the doors.

“I’m the man who survived.””

Nia made the call.

Everyone waited.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a voice answered.

Quiet.

Careful.

“Adrian?””

My chest tightened.

“Ethan.””

A long silence followed.

Then I heard him breathe.

“I didn’t know if you would answer.””

“I didn’t know if you were alive.””

Another silence.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology carried years of weight.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Not yet.””

I looked at Richard.

He was watching me.

Listening.

“You sent me a message.””

“Yes.””

“You said you know who caused the accident.””

Ethan’s voice became lower.

“I know who ordered it.””

The room seemed to disappear.

I turned away from everyone.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Before I say anything, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Richard Vale was never the person in charge.””

My eyes moved toward Richard.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

“Then who was?””

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

“The person you trusted most.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“No.””

“Adrian—”

“No.””

Because there was only one person left.

One person who knew everything.

One person who had been near me since childhood.

I looked at Daniel.

He noticed.

His expression changed.

“Who are you talking about?””

I ignored him.

“Ethan, say it.””

The line went silent.

Then:

“Your father’s attorney.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel.

The man standing beside me.

The man who helped uncover the betrayal.

The man who claimed he was protecting me.

The man who knew every piece of the puzzle.

“No.””

Ethan’s voice softened.

“I’m sorry.””

The call suddenly cut.

I stared at the phone.

Then slowly turned.

Daniel was watching me.

“What did he say?””

Nobody spoke.

The ballroom waited.

May you like

And in that moment, I realized the most dangerous person in the room might not be the one I had been fighting.

It might be the one standing beside me.
