Chapter 2: The Ownership Papers

The ballroom felt smaller after I stood.

Not because the walls moved.

Because everyone’s attention shifted.

A few minutes earlier, I had been the man everyone pitied.

Now I was the man everyone wanted answers from.

The music had stopped.

The conversations had died.

Even the people who had laughed at Vanessa’s cruel joke couldn’t look away.

I held the sealed envelope in my hand.

The same envelope Marcus had spent months trying to make disappear.

Vanessa stared at it like it was a weapon.

“What is that?””

Her voice was different now.

The arrogance was gone.

I noticed.

So did everyone else.

I looked at Nia.

She gave me a small nod.

“Go ahead, Mr. Bennett.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Adrian, don’t do this.””

I almost smiled.

“Do what?””

“Whatever this little performance is.””

I looked around at the guests.

“The performance?””

I touched the wine stain on my jacket.

“Interesting choice of words.””

Her eyes narrowed.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Adrian, enough.””

There it was.

The old Marcus.

The confident Marcus.

The man who always believed he could control every room he entered.

He lowered his voice.

“You don’t want to embarrass yourself.””

I stared at him.

“You should have thought about that before you embarrassed me.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

“No,” I replied.

“You’re the one who has no idea.””

A wave of whispers moved through the crowd.

Vanessa looked between us.

“What are you talking about?””

I didn’t answer.

Not yet.

Because for months, Marcus had enjoyed watching people believe his lies.

Tonight, I wanted him to feel what it was like to stand inside one.

Nia stepped closer.

“Mr. Bennett, should I explain the documents?””

Marcus immediately reacted.

“No.””

The word came out too quickly.

Everyone noticed.

Nia raised an eyebrow.

“No?””

Marcus forced a laugh.

“I mean, there’s no reason to make this dramatic.””

I looked at him.

“You’re worried about drama?””

He looked away.

That told me everything.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Marcus.””

He looked down at her.

“What?””

Her voice dropped.

“You said this company belonged to you.””

The ballroom went silent again.

Marcus froze.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

Vanessa saw it.

She saw the hesitation.

The fear.

The uncertainty.

The first crack in the story he had sold her.

I remembered the night I discovered the betrayal.

The night I found emails hidden inside my own company system.

The night I realized the people closest to me weren’t just leaving.

They were taking.

But I wasn’t ready to reveal that part yet.

Not until everyone was watching.

Not until Marcus had nowhere left to hide.

I looked at the envelope.

Then at him.

“You really should have read the fine print.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You think you’re some kind of hero now?””

“No.””

I took one step forward.

“I think I’m the person you forgot about.””

The crowd reacted quietly.

A few guests exchanged looks.

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

For the first time, she wasn’t standing beside Marcus proudly.

She was standing beside him suspiciously.

That was exactly where I wanted her.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“You can’t just walk in here and claim everything.””

I tilted my head.

“Claim?””

I looked at Nia.

She understood immediately.

She pulled a second folder from her bag.

Not an envelope.

Not a dramatic reveal.

Just another piece of evidence.

“Mr. Bennett has been the majority owner since the original acquisition agreement,” Nia said.

Marcus went completely still.

Vanessa looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus swallowed.

“That’s not true.””

Nia remained calm.

“I have the signed documents.””

The room erupted with whispers.

I watched Marcus’s confidence disappear piece by piece.

The expensive tuxedo.

The perfect smile.

The confident posture.

All of it was just decoration.

Just like the lies.

Vanessa turned toward me.

“You knew?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

Her expression changed.

“Then why did you let me leave?””

That question hung in the air.

For a second, I remembered the woman I loved.

The woman who held my hand in hospitals.

The woman who promised she would never abandon me.

Then I remembered her walking away.

Her suitcase rolling across the floor.

Her saying she didn’t want a broken future.

I looked back at the woman standing in front of me now.

“I wanted to know who stayed when there was nothing left to gain.””

Vanessa’s face fell.

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed at me.

“He’s manipulating this entire situation.””

I said nothing.

Because I knew something he didn’t.

The papers weren’t the end.

They were the beginning.

Marcus looked around desperately.

Then he noticed something.

The cameras.

The guests.

The executives.

Everyone watching.

His voice lowered.

“Adrian…”

For the first time, he sounded afraid.

“What exactly are you planning?””

I looked at the sealed envelope again.

Then back at him.

“I’m not planning anything.””

A pause.

“I’m revealing what already happened.””

Before Marcus could respond, a phone on one of the nearby tables began ringing.

Everyone turned.

Nia looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

She picked it up.

Then looked directly at me.

“Mr. Bennett…”

I knew that voice.

Something had happened.

Something unexpected.

May you like

Because Nia never looked nervous.

Until now.
