Chapter 5: The Witness Nobody Expected

Daniel Cross walked into the ballroom carrying a leather briefcase.

For years, he had been the man my family trusted.

My father trusted him.

I trusted him.

He handled every major legal decision involving Bennett Global Holdings.

He knew every contract.

Every account.

Every secret.

And now he stood at the entrance of the gala like he had been waiting for this moment.

Vanessa immediately looked away.

Marcus looked worse.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

That told me everything.

“You knew he was coming,” I said.

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel walked toward us slowly.

His expression was serious.

Not nervous.

Not guilty.

Just tired.

Like a man who had carried something heavy for too long.

“Adrian.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel.””

The room watched us.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Daniel stopped in front of me.

“I owe you an explanation.””

I looked at the document in my hand.

“I think you owe me more than that.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t.””

He looked at her.

And the sadness in his eyes was almost worse than anger.

“Vanessa, you had your chance.””

Her face went pale.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“No.””

One word.

But it carried weight.

“You be careful.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

Daniel looked around the room.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

He opened his briefcase.

Inside were several files.

Not copies.

Original documents.

The kind of documents that could destroy reputations.

He placed them on a nearby table.

“Six months ago, Adrian Bennett was involved in a serious accident.””

The room became silent.

“During that time, several unauthorized decisions were made regarding company ownership.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Marcus.

“Unauthorized?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus laughed.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Daniel didn’t react.

“You want to explain why your signature appears on documents transferring company assets you never owned?””

The smile disappeared from Marcus’s face.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody whispered.

Everyone was listening.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You said you had control.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I did.””

“No.””

Her voice became smaller.

“You lied.””

He looked frustrated.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

Marcus had no answer.

Daniel opened another file.

“Adrian’s accident created an opportunity.””

My chest tightened.

An opportunity.

That was how they saw it.

Not a tragedy.

Not a person fighting for his life.

A chance.

“While Adrian was hospitalized,” Daniel continued, “Marcus attempted to convince investors that Adrian was incapable of returning.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You told them I was finished.””

Marcus looked away.

Daniel continued.

“He also encouraged several board members to transfer decision-making authority.””

The room reacted.

One of the executives near the back shook his head.

“I knew something felt wrong.””

Marcus turned.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Actually, I have recordings.””

That changed everything.

Marcus froze.

Vanessa stared.

“Recordings?””

Daniel nodded.

“Conversations. Meetings. Instructions.””

My hands tightened.

“How long have you had them?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Since the beginning.””

The answer hurt.

More than I expected.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His expression changed.

Regret.

“I tried.””

A pause.

“But I was blocked.””

“By who?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

The answer was obvious.

Marcus stepped back.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel opened the briefcase again.

Then he removed a small device.

“A backup of the original files.””

Marcus’s face lost all color.

Vanessa whispered:

“You recorded him?””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

He turned toward me.

“He recorded himself.””

The room went silent.

Because everyone understood.

People rarely document their own crimes.

Unless they believe they are untouchable.

Marcus stared at the device.

Then at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Panic.

Real panic.

He stepped toward me.

“Adrian, don’t do this.””

I looked at him.

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything.””

I almost laughed.

“You mean your everything.””

His expression hardened.

“You don’t know the consequences.””

Daniel suddenly looked toward the entrance.

His face changed.

“What?””

I followed his gaze.

A man in a dark suit stood near the doorway.

Watching.

Waiting.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“That’s impossible.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The man began walking toward us.

And everyone moved aside.

Because even Marcus looked afraid of him.

Daniel whispered:

“Adrian…”

May you like

A pause.

“That’s the person who started all of this.””
