Chapter 13: The Truth They Tried to Bury

The ballroom had become a battlefield.

Not with weapons.

Not with shouting.

With truth.

One by one, the secrets people had protected for months were coming apart.

Richard stood frozen near the center of the room, his phone still in his hand.

For the first time all night, he looked like he had no plan.

No backup.

No escape.

Nia watched him carefully.

“What files were sent?””

Richard didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Answer her.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“You really think this changes anything?””

I almost smiled.

“You’re still asking that question?””

The same question he had asked all night.

The same arrogance.

The same belief that he was above consequences.

But something had changed.

He wasn’t looking at me like I was a problem anymore.

He was looking at me like I was a threat.

“They were supposed to stay hidden,” Richard said quietly.

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Richard laughed softly.

“Now you’re asking?””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You knew?””

Richard looked at him.

“You were there.””

That sentence hit harder than any confession.

Daniel stepped back.

“I never agreed to murder.””

The ballroom went completely quiet.

Everyone heard it.

The word.

Murder.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus looked sick.

I stared at Daniel.

“You said you didn’t want me dead.””

His face changed.

Because now everyone knew.

That wasn’t a random statement.

It was a truth that escaped.

Daniel looked at me.

“Adrian…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to explain anymore.””

His expression broke slightly.

For years, I had seen Daniel as family.

Now he was just another person who had chosen a side.

Nia’s tablet made a sound.

She looked down.

“Mr. Bennett.””

“What?””

“The investors are responding.””

I waited.

“Most of them are requesting an emergency conference.””

Richard looked suddenly concerned.

“They can’t.””

Nia looked at him.

“They already did.””

A few executives in the room began checking their phones.

The whispers grew louder.

The empire Richard thought he controlled was moving without him.

I looked at him.

“This is what happens when people finally see what you are.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You think investors care about morality?””

“No.””

I held his gaze.

“They care about risk.””

That stopped him.

Because I knew exactly how men like Richard thought.

They didn’t fear being called cruel.

They feared being called dangerous.

And tonight, every person with money had learned one thing.

Richard Vale was a liability.

Marcus suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

It wasn’t confidence.

It was desperation.

“You all think Adrian wins?””

He looked around.

“You think this ends with Richard?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus pointed toward me.

“He knew.””

The room went still.

I looked at him.

“Knew what?””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then Richard.

Then back at me.

“The accident wasn’t planned because of the company.””

My expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus swallowed.

“It was because of something your father discovered.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

Richard immediately turned.

“Stop.””

That one word revealed everything.

Marcus saw it.

And for the first time, he realized he had power.

Small power.

But enough.

“No.””

Marcus smiled bitterly.

“You used me.””

Richard stared at him.

“So now you’re going to betray everyone?””

Marcus laughed.

“Everyone already betrayed me.””

He looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

He looked at Richard.

“You promised I would get everything.””

Richard said nothing.

Marcus turned to me.

“Your father found out about offshore accounts.””

The room reacted.

Daniel closed his eyes.

I felt the pieces connecting.

“What accounts?””

Marcus looked at Richard.

“His.””

Richard’s face became cold.

“Careful.””

Marcus ignored him.

“He was moving company money before Adrian took over.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“My father discovered it.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“And?””

“He confronted Richard.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

Daniel continued.

“And Richard realized your father would expose him.””

The room became silent.

My father.

The accident.

The company.

The lies.

Everything connected.

Richard wasn’t trying to steal my company.

He was trying to erase evidence.

I looked at him.

“You didn’t want the business.””

Richard said nothing.

“You wanted the records gone.””

Still nothing.

Nia looked at me.

“Mr. Bennett…”

I nodded.

Because I finally understood.

The company was never the prize.

The company was the hiding place.

Richard had spent years building a wall around the truth.

And tonight, that wall was collapsing.

Security approached.

“Mr. Vale?””

Richard looked at them.

“You think this is over?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“It’s almost over.””

He smiled.

“Almost?””

Before I could answer, another notification appeared on Nia’s tablet.

Her face changed.

“What now?””

She turned the screen toward me.

A video file.

Timestamped.

The night of the accident.

My heartbeat slowed.

Because I knew.

The answer was finally here.

Who was driving.

Who pushed me off that road.

Who decided my life was worth destroying.

May you like

I looked at the screen.

And pressed play.
