Chapter 11: The Final Betrayal
The silence between Daniel and me felt heavier than the entire ballroom.
For years, I had known him.
Not casually.
Not professionally.
Personally.
He attended my father’s funeral.
He helped my mother handle the company after his death.
He was the man who taught me how to read contracts.
How to negotiate.
How to protect myself.
And now I was standing there wondering if he had been teaching me those things because he wanted me prepared.
Or because he knew exactly how he planned to use them against me.
“Adrian.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
I looked at him.
“Tell me I’m wrong.””
His face tightened.
“About what?””
That answer hurt.
Because if he was innocent, he would have asked immediately.
He would have demanded to know.
Instead, he measured his words.
Carefully.
Like a lawyer.
Like someone hiding behind language.
“Tell me Ethan is lying.””
Daniel looked down.
That was enough.
The room reacted.
A few executives stepped away from him.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus looked stunned.
Even Richard looked surprised.
Interesting.
Richard didn’t know everything either.
Daniel finally spoke.
“I can explain.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone tonight had the same sentence.
I can explain.
“You always can.””
His eyes met mine.
“I never wanted this.””
“Wanted what?””
He looked around.
“The accident.””
The words landed.
Not a denial.
A carefully chosen confession.
“You knew.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I knew there was a plan.””
The ballroom erupted.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because I was surprised.
Because part of me had been hoping.
Hoping there was one person left.
One person who didn’t betray me.
“You knew someone was trying to destroy me.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was trying to stop it.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You were trying to control it.””
Daniel looked at me.
And the expression on his face told me I was right.
He wasn’t a victim.
He wasn’t innocent.
He was someone who believed he had the right to make decisions for everyone else.
“I saw what Richard was becoming,” Daniel said.
“And?””
“I thought I could manage him.””
I shook my head.
“You thought you could manage a monster.””
His silence confirmed it.
Richard stepped forward.
“Interesting.””
Everyone looked at him.
For once, he wasn’t angry.
He looked amused.
“Daniel always believed he was smarter than everyone.””
Daniel turned.
“Don’t.””
Richard smiled.
“You really never told him?””
I looked between them.
“Told me what?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Richard continued.
“The accident wasn’t just about removing you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Tell him.””
Daniel said nothing.
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“Your father left something behind.””
“What?””
“A private agreement.””
The room became silent.
Daniel continued.
“Before he died, your father discovered financial problems inside the company.””
I frowned.
“My father never mentioned that.””
“Because he didn’t trust anyone.””
A pause.
“Except me.””
The irony almost made me laugh.
“So he left you information.””
“Yes.””
“And you hid it.””
Daniel looked away.
“I protected it.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You protected yourself.””
Daniel didn’t argue.
That hurt more.
Richard smiled.
“Now you understand.””
I looked at him.
“Understand what?””
“That everyone around you wanted something.””
His eyes moved to Vanessa.
“Her.””
Marcus.
“Him.””
Daniel.
“Even him.””
I stared at Richard.
“You’re enjoying this.””
“No.””
His smile faded.
“I’m proving a point.””
“What point?””
“That trust is a weakness.””
I looked around the room.
At all the people who had betrayed me.
Then I looked back at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“Trust is only a weakness when you give it to the wrong people.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Adrian, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
“I’m listening.””
“I made mistakes.””
“Yes.””
“But I never wanted you dead.””
The room went silent.
I focused on one word.
Dead.
Not gone.
Not removed.
Dead.
“Why did you say that?””
Daniel froze.
He realized too late.
He had revealed something.
Something nobody had said.
I looked at him.
“You know more than you’re telling me.””
Before he could answer, the ballroom doors opened.
Security rushed inside.
Everyone turned.
A security officer walked toward Nia.
“Miss Carter.””
Nia looked confused.
“What happened?””
The officer handed her an envelope.
Her face changed when she saw it.
“What is it?””
She looked at me.
“Mr. Bennett…”
I walked closer.
She opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph taken the night of my accident.
And on the back was a handwritten message.
I read it.
May you like
And felt the world stop.
*The person who pushed you off the road is in this room.*
