Chapter 8: The Last Move

The words hung in the air.

“You might want to see what just happened to your company.””

Everyone looked at me.

Waiting for a reaction.

Waiting for anger.

Waiting for panic.

I gave them none.

Because Richard wanted that.

He wanted me emotional.

He wanted me desperate.

He wanted me to move before thinking.

I had made that mistake once.

I wouldn’t make it again.

“What did you do?”” I asked.

Richard placed his phone back in his pocket.

“Nothing.””

A smile.

“Nothing that wasn’t already possible.””

Nia immediately pulled out her tablet.

“I’ll check.””

Richard didn’t stop her.

That bothered me.

People who are bluffing usually rush to prove their power.

Richard looked relaxed.

Too relaxed.

Seconds later, Nia’s expression changed.

She looked at me.

“Mr. Bennett…”

“What?””

She hesitated.

“The board meeting.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What board meeting?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel spoke quietly.

“They scheduled an emergency vote.””

I looked at him.

“When?””

“Tonight.””

The room reacted.

Even the executives looked shocked.

Richard smiled.

“You see?””

He walked slowly across the ballroom.

“While everyone was distracted by your little comeback performance, the real world continued.””

I watched him.

“You planned a vote during the gala.””

“Yes.””

He didn’t deny it.

“Because people make mistakes when they’re emotional.””

His eyes moved to Marcus.

“Especially people who think they’ve already won.””

Marcus looked furious.

“You said I would control everything.””

Richard looked at him.

“I said you would be useful.””

The words destroyed him.

Vanessa stared at Marcus.

Then at Richard.

She finally understood.

They had both been manipulated.

I turned to Nia.

“Can we stop the vote?””

She looked at the tablet.

“I’m checking.””

Richard laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“Understand what?””

“The company doesn’t belong to you anymore.””

A murmur moved through the room.

Richard continued.

“The legal structure changed months ago.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard looked at him.

“Is it?””

Daniel’s face changed.

He knew something.

“What?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

“There was a clause.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What clause?””

He looked at me.

“A protection clause.””

The room waited.

Daniel continued.

“Your father created it years ago.””

My father.

Again.

Everything came back to him.

“What did it do?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“It allowed a temporary transfer of control if the company faced a leadership crisis.””

Richard smiled.

“Exactly.””

I looked at him.

“You activated it.””

“Yes.””

“But only under certain conditions.””

Richard’s smile faded slightly.

Daniel continued.

“The conditions require proof that the CEO is permanently unable to perform his duties.””

Silence.

I looked at my wheelchair.

Then at Richard.

“You declared me incapable.””

Richard said nothing.

That was the answer.

Vanessa whispered:

“You told everyone he couldn’t walk again.””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

Richard didn’t care.

“I made a business decision.””

“No.””

My voice cut through the room.

“You made a selfish decision.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You’re angry because you lost.””

I shook my head.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

I looked around.

“At every point, you assumed I was fighting to get back what I lost.””

A pause.

“I’m not.””

Richard frowned.

“Then what are you fighting for?””

I looked at him.

“The truth.””

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

Only briefly.

But I saw it.

Because powerful people fear one thing more than losing money.

Exposure.

Nia suddenly looked up from her tablet.

“Mr. Bennett.””

“What?””

She turned the screen toward me.

“The vote is happening in twelve minutes.””

Richard smiled.

“Twelve minutes until reality catches up.””

I looked at the time.

Then at Daniel.

Then Emily.

Everyone was waiting for my next move.

I looked at the empty wheelchair behind me.

Six months ago, I had lost everything.

My mobility.

My company.

My future.

Tonight, I had learned the truth.

But truth alone wasn’t enough.

I needed proof.

I needed power.

And I needed one thing Richard didn’t know I had.

I reached into my jacket pocket.

And pulled out a small device.

Richard’s expression changed.

“What is that?””

May you like

I looked at him.

“The reason you’re about to lose.””
