Chapter 3: The Brother Who Buried the Truth

Marcus Hale stared at the name written on Elena’s letter until the ink seemed to blur.

Adrian.

His brother.

His partner.

The man who had stood beside him through the hardest years of his life.

The man who had attended every family event, every company meeting, every celebration.

The man who had hugged Marcus after Elena disappeared and said, “I’m sorry, brother. Some people are just not meant to stay.””

For twelve years, Marcus had believed those words were comfort.

Now they sounded like a confession.

Malik watched the billionaire’s face carefully.

“Your brother did this?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

The silence was enough.

Malik’s expression hardened.

“I knew it.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

“My mother never trusted rich people.””

“That doesn’t mean—”

“She trusted you.””

The words stopped Marcus.

Malik pointed at the letter.

“She left proof because she believed you would eventually find it.””

Marcus looked down.

The paper trembled slightly in his hand.

Elena’s handwriting was still there.

The woman he had spent twelve years trying to forget and failing every single day.

He remembered the first time he met her.

She wasn’t impressed by his money.

She didn’t care about his company.

She laughed when he tried to buy her an expensive dinner.

“You know,” she had told him, “some people use money because they have nothing interesting to say.””

Marcus had smiled.

“Are you saying I’m boring?””

“I’m saying I haven’t decided yet.””

She had challenged him.

She had seen the person beneath the suit.

And somehow, without even trying, she had become the only person who made him feel normal.

Until one night, everything vanished.

Marcus folded the letter carefully.

“We need to leave.””

Malik looked surprised.

“That’s it?””

“What do you mean?””

“You find out your brother might have destroyed your life, and you just walk away?””

Marcus looked at him.

“I’m not walking away.””

“Then what are you doing?””

“Making sure we don’t make a mistake.””

Malik crossed his arms.

“You’re still protecting him.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“No.””

“Yes, you are.””

The accusation hit harder because Marcus knew there was some truth behind it.

He had spent years refusing to believe Adrian could do something terrible.

Because admitting Adrian was guilty meant admitting Marcus had failed.

Failed Elena.

Failed Malik.

Failed himself.

A sound interrupted them.

Footsteps.

Both men turned.

A man in a dark coat stood near the entrance of the station.

Watching.

Malik immediately recognized the feeling.

The same feeling from outside the restaurant.

Someone had been following them.

“Is that him?”” Malik whispered.

Marcus looked.

The man disappeared behind a pillar.

“Stay here.””

Malik grabbed his arm.

“No.””

Marcus looked at his hand.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Malik released him.

“I’m not a child.””

Marcus studied him.

“I know.””

The answer surprised Malik.

Most people treated him like someone fragile.

Someone who needed saving.

Marcus didn’t.

“You’re Elena’s son,” Marcus said quietly.

“I should have known you wouldn’t be.””

Before Malik could respond, Marcus walked toward the entrance.

The man was gone.

Only a newspaper remained on a bench.

Marcus picked it up.

Inside was a single message written in black ink.

*STOP DIGGING.*

His face changed.

Malik saw it immediately.

“What?””

Marcus folded the paper.

“Nothing.””

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Lie.””

The word was sharp.

Marcus looked at him.

And for the first time, he understood something important.

Malik wasn’t angry because he hated him.

He was angry because he had spent his entire life surrounded by secrets.

Everyone had decided what he could handle.

His mother.

The people who knew the truth.

Even Marcus.

No more.

Marcus handed him the note.

Malik read it.

His expression didn’t change.

But his fingers tightened.

“They know about us.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Marcus looked around the station.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

The Hale International headquarters looked different after midnight.

During the day, the building represented success.

Glass walls.

Perfect floors.

Thousands of employees.

A symbol of power.

But at night, it felt empty.

Like a beautiful house with nobody inside.

Marcus entered through a private entrance with Malik beside him.

The security guards looked confused.

Nobody brought strangers into Marcus Hale’s office.

Especially not young men carrying old backpacks.

“Mr. Hale,” his assistant, Claire, said as she approached.

“I wasn’t expecting you tonight.””

Marcus removed his coat.

“I need access to the archives.””

Claire frowned.

“The archives?””

“Yes.””

“At this hour?””

Marcus looked at her.

She immediately understood.

“Of course.””

Malik watched the exchange.

“You trust her?””

Marcus glanced at Claire.

“She’s worked with me for nine years.””

Malik looked away.

“That’s what you thought about your brother too.””

The sentence hurt.

Marcus didn’t argue.

Claire noticed the tension.

But she wisely said nothing.

They entered the private elevator.

As they went up, Malik looked at the city through the glass walls.

“You really live like this?””

Marcus looked over.

“What do you mean?””

“All of this.””

Malik gestured toward the building.

“The money. The company. The security.””

Marcus was quiet.

Then he said:

“It gets quieter the higher you go.””

Malik looked at him.

“What?””

“Everyone thinks having more means having less problems.””

Marcus watched the city lights below.

“But sometimes the bigger your world becomes, the fewer people you can trust.””

For a moment, Malik didn’t see a billionaire.

He saw a lonely man.

The elevator doors opened.

Marcus led him into a private archive room.

Thousands of files lined the walls.

“Everything about my family is here.””

Malik looked around.

“You kept records?””

“I kept everything.””

Marcus walked toward a locked cabinet.

Inside were files about Adrian.

Business records.

Company reports.

Personal documents.

Marcus pulled out a file labeled:

*HALE FAMILY PARTNERSHIP — INTERNAL REVIEW*

He opened it.

The first page contained financial information.

The second page contained something that made Malik step closer.

A photograph.

It showed Adrian meeting with someone in a parking garage.

A woman.

Malik looked carefully.

“That’s my mother.””

Marcus froze.

The picture was dated eleven days before Elena disappeared.

“She was meeting Adrian?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He turned the page.

There was a transaction record.

A payment made from an unknown account.

The amount was enormous.

Malik’s voice became quiet.

“What is that?””

Marcus stared.

“I don’t know.””

The payment description was simple.

But terrifying.

*PROJECT ECHO — FINAL TRANSFER*

Marcus had never seen it before.

“How could this be in my company records?””

Malik looked at him.

“Because someone wanted you to find it.””

Marcus felt a chill.

Before he could respond, the archive lights suddenly went dark.

The room fell silent.

Malik immediately stepped back.

“Marcus.””

“I’m here.””

A sound came from the hallway.

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone was trying to enter.

Marcus moved in front of Malik.

The billionaire who had faced enemies without fear now looked ready to fight.

The door opened.

A figure stood in the darkness.

“Marcus.””

The voice was familiar.

Too familiar.

The lights flickered back on.

And both men froze.

Because standing in the doorway was the person they had just been searching for.

Adrian Hale.

Marcus’s older brother.

The man who was supposed to be the enemy.

Adrian looked at Malik.

Then at the photograph on the table.

Then at the brass key.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You found him,” Adrian whispered.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You knew?””

Adrian said nothing.

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“You knew Elena had a son.””

Adrian looked at Malik.

And for a moment, Malik saw something strange in his eyes.

Regret.

Then Adrian whispered the words that made Marcus’s blood run cold.

“I knew he existed before Elena disappeared.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared at his brother.

“What did you just say?””

Adrian looked down.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say my name like nothing happened.””

Adrian swallowed.

“I tried to protect you.””

Malik laughed bitterly.

“Protect him?””

Adrian looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Malik said.

“I understand perfectly.””

Adrian’s eyes moved back to Marcus.

“She wasn’t running away.””

Marcus’s face went pale.

“Then why did you tell me she abandoned me?””

Adrian looked toward the floor.

Because the answer was worse than any lie.

“Because if you knew the truth…”

He stopped.

Marcus’s voice shook.

“Tell me.””

Adrian looked up.

And the fear in his eyes finally broke through.

“Because if you knew the truth, you would have gone after the people who took her.””

Malik felt his heart stop.

“Who took her?””

Adrian looked at him.

Then at Marcus.

May you like

And whispered:

“The same people who have been watching you tonight.””
