Chapter 5: The Child Hidden From the World

The message on Adrian’s phone remained on the screen.

*RUN BEFORE THEY FIND THE OTHER ONE.*

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The words felt heavier than any threat Marcus had ever received.

Because they weren’t a warning about money.

They weren’t about business.

They were about family.

Malik stared at the phone.

“The other one…”

His voice was quiet.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked away.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“You know.””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You know what that means.””

Adrian’s silence became the answer.

Malik stood up.

“No.””

Both men looked at him.

“No more secrets.””

His voice shook.

“But I’m done being the person everyone protects by lying to me.””

Adrian looked guilty.

Malik pointed toward the phone.

“My mother disappeared because of this.””

“Yes.””

“I spent my entire life wondering why she left.””

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“And now I find out people were hunting her.””

“Yes.””

“And you still don’t want to tell me everything?””

Adrian looked at him.

“I want to.””

“Then do it.””

The room went quiet.

Marcus watched his brother carefully.

For the first time in twelve years, Adrian looked afraid of something more powerful than money or enemies.

He looked afraid of the truth.

“There was another child,” Adrian said.

The words landed like a stone.

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Adrian walked toward the desk and placed both hands on it.

“Your father had secrets before you ever knew about them.””

Marcus’s face darkened.

“Don’t bring him into this unless you have proof.””

“I do.””

Adrian looked at Malik.

“Elena found records. Not just financial records.””

“What kind of records?”” Malik asked.

“Birth records.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“Explain.””

Adrian swallowed.

“Your father had a relationship before he married your mother.””

Marcus frowned.

“Our father?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You think our father was the kind of man who told us everything?””

Marcus said nothing.

Because he knew the answer.

Their father had controlled everything.

The company.

The family.

The information everyone received.

“He had another child,” Adrian continued.

Malik’s mind raced.

“Another child from another relationship?””

Adrian nodded.

“But Elena discovered something strange.””

“What?””

“She found out the child was connected to our family in a way nobody expected.””

Marcus stared.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked at him.

“It means Elena believed the child was not just our father’s secret.””

A long silence.

“It was her secret too.””

Two hours later, Marcus’s private jet was prepared.

Not for a business trip.

Not for a meeting.

For an escape.

The three of them sat in the airport lounge, surrounded by security.

But Marcus knew security wouldn’t help.

The people chasing them had already proven they could get close.

Malik sat by the window, staring at the runway.

Marcus sat across from him.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Finally, Marcus broke the silence.

“You hate me.””

Malik looked over.

“What?””

“You should.””

Malik looked away.

“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.””

The honesty surprised Marcus.

“That’s worse.””

“Maybe.””

Marcus looked down.

“I should have known.””

Malik’s expression changed slightly.

“Known what?””

“That you existed.””

The pain in Marcus’s voice was impossible to fake.

Malik didn’t respond.

Marcus continued.

“I spent twelve years thinking the woman I loved chose to leave me.””

He looked at Malik.

“And all that time, you were somewhere in this world.””

Malik swallowed.

“You didn’t know.””

“No.””

“But you could have looked harder.””

The sentence hurt.

Because Marcus had asked himself the same question thousands of times.

“Maybe I should have.””

Malik looked at him.

“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said.””

Marcus accepted the criticism.

Because he deserved it.

A flight announcement echoed through the lounge.

Adrian looked at his phone.

His face changed.

“What?””

Marcus noticed.

“What happened?””

Adrian turned the screen around.

A news alert had appeared.

*HALE INTERNATIONAL CEO MARCUS HALE ACCUSED OF SECRET FAMILY COVER-UP.*

Below it was a photograph.

A picture of Marcus.

And Malik.

Taken outside the restaurant.

Malik stared.

“They found us.””

Marcus stood.

“Not just us.””

The article loaded.

The headline changed.

*MYSTERY YOUNG MAN CLAIMS TO BE HALE HEIR.*

Adrian cursed quietly.

“They want the public looking in the wrong direction.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because chaos creates opportunities.””

Malik looked at the article.

“They’re making me look like a fraud.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian answered.

“Because if people believe you’re lying, nobody will believe the truth.””

They flew to an old Hale family property outside the city.

A place Marcus had not visited in years.

The house sat on a hill surrounded by trees.

It had once been where Marcus spent summers as a child.

Now it felt like a museum of things he had lost.

Inside, Adrian led them to a hidden room beneath the library.

Malik looked around.

“You knew about this?””

Adrian nodded.

“Your grandfather built it.””

Marcus touched the wall.

He remembered his father bringing him here.

But he had never known the room existed.

“He always said secrets were safer when nobody knew where they were hidden.””

Marcus’s voice was bitter.

“He was right.””

Adrian opened an old metal cabinet.

Inside were files.

Photos.

Documents.

Everything his father had hidden.

Malik picked up a photograph.

It showed Elena.

Standing beside a woman Malik had never seen.

“Who is she?””

Adrian looked over.

His expression changed.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus took the picture.

On the back was a date.

And a name.

*Lydia Voss.*

Adrian went pale.

“What?””

Marcus noticed.

“You know that name.””

Adrian didn’t answer.

“Adrian.””

The older brother closed his eyes.

“Lydia Voss was my father’s attorney.””

Malik looked at him.

“And?””

“And she was the person who handled every private agreement our family ever made.””

Marcus looked at the picture.

“Why was Elena with her?””

Adrian pulled out another document.

A contract.

The paper was old.

But the signature was clear.

Elena Hale.

Marcus froze.

“Elena?””

Adrian nodded.

“She signed something.””

Malik moved closer.

“What?””

Marcus read the title.

His expression changed.

*GUARDIANSHIP AGREEMENT.*

The room went silent.

Malik looked confused.

“My mother signed a guardianship agreement?””

Adrian looked at the document.

“Yes.””

“For who?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus turned the page.

There was a name.

A name that made all three men stop.

Because it wasn’t Malik.

It wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t anyone they expected.

It was another child.

A child Elena had promised to protect.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“What did our father do?””

Adrian’s face became pale.

“He tried to erase a person from history.””

Malik stared at the document.

“Who is the child?””

Before Adrian could answer, the lights in the house went out.

The security alarm began screaming.

Marcus immediately moved toward Malik.

“Stay behind me.””

A window shattered upstairs.

Someone was inside.

Adrian grabbed a flashlight.

“They found us.””

Footsteps echoed above them.

Slow.

Calm.

Whoever entered wasn’t afraid.

Marcus looked around the dark room.

Then he heard a voice from the hallway.

A woman’s voice.

A voice none of them expected.

“Marcus.””

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

Impossible.

After twelve years.

Impossible.

Malik looked at him.

“What’s wrong?””

Marcus couldn’t breathe.

The voice came again.

“Marcus, please.””

The billionaire slowly stepped toward the door.

Because somewhere deep inside him, his heart already knew.

The person standing on the other side wasn’t an enemy.

It was the person he had spent twelve years believing he lost forever.

Marcus whispered:

“Elena?””

The door opened.

And a woman stood in the darkness.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

She looked at Marcus.

Then at Malik.

Tears filled her eyes.

“My son…”

Malik stopped breathing.

Because the woman he had searched for his entire life was finally standing in front of him.

But she wasn’t looking at him with relief.

She was looking at him with fear.

And the first words she spoke were not an apology.

Not an explanation.

Not a greeting.

They were a warning.

“Malik…”

Her voice trembled.

“You were never supposed to find Marcus.””

She looked behind them.

At the hidden files.

At the open documents.

At the truth they had uncovered.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Because if you found him, they already know where the other child is.””
